Leeds struck gold with £2m star who’d be worth more than Rutter in 2024

da casino: Leeds United failed to earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking after they lost in the final of the play-offs last season.

da dobrowin: They finished third in the Championship and beat Norwich City in the semi-finals of the play-offs before losing 1-0 to Southampton in the final at Wembley.

Their failure to return to the top-flight left them vulnerable during the summer transfer window, as clubs across Europe moved to sign their biggest talents.

Archie Gray joined Tottenham Hotspur, Georginio Rutter signed for Brighton & Hove Albion, Crysencio Summerville moved to West Ham United, and Glen Kamara was snapped up by Rennes.

They had all been regular starters for Daniel Farke in the Championship during the 2023/24 campaign, which meant that it was a blow to lose any of them, let alone all four.

The German head coach did then bring in the likes of Largie Ramazani, Manor Solomon, Joe Rodon, Ao Tanaka, Isaac Schmidt, and Joe Rothwell, among others, to bolster his playing squad.

However, it remains to be seen whether or not the Whites have improved their squad with those moves, and Rutter is one player who will be difficult to replace.

How much Leeds sold Georginio Rutter for

Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion swooped in to activate a £40m release clause in the former France U21 international’s contract last month.

That was a club-record deal for the Seagulls, who were willing to splash the cash to snap the centre-forward up from Elland Road after his impressive performances in the Championship last season.

Rutter, after joining Leeds in the Premier League initially, thrived in the second tier under Farke, with his sublime creativity playing a crucial role in the club’s run to the play-off final.

As you can see in the table above, the left-footed star was directly involved in 21 goals in 45 appearances for Leeds and created 22 ‘big chances’ in total.

This suggests that his teammates let him down at times with their wasteful finishing, as they did not make the most of the high-quality opportunities he created.

In fact, the 22-year-old whiz ranked within the top 2% of forwards in the Championship for assists (0.39) and Expected Assisted Goals (0.29) per 90 respectively last season, which shows that he was one of the most creative players in the league.

Per Transfermarkt, Rutter is the most expensive centre-forward in the club’s history, with only Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha sold for more, but that does not take inflation into account.

If you adjust for the inflation in football over the years, Leeds once cashed in on another impressive number nine for even more than the £40m Brighton splashed on the French attacker.

How much Leeds paid for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

In the summer of 1997, Leeds swooped to sign Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink from Portuguese side Boavista for a reported transfer fee of just £2m.

The 25-year-old marksman had plundered an eye-catching 20 goals in 29 league games for Boavista in the top-flight during the 1996/97 campaign, which convinced the Whites to snap him up.

Hasselbaink did not need any time to adjust and adapt to the Premier League. The Dutch sensation fired in 16 goals in 33 matches, along with one assist, in the division during his first season with the West Yorkshire outfit.

As you can see in the table above, the Dutchman took his game to another level in his second year at Elland Road, with a return of 31 direct goal contributions in 36 games.

Hasselbaink produced 34 goals and 14 assists in two Premier League campaigns with Leeds, which proved that he had the quality to be a regular provider of goals and assists in a major European league.

Rutter, meanwhile, only managed six goals and 15 assists in the Championship for the Whites and earned himself a staggering £40m transfer to Brighton.

The Dutch attacker, however, did not go for anywhere near as much as that in actual money after his transfer request and subsequent departure in 1999, but the value of the deal was worth more than £40m if you adjust for inflation.

How much Leeds sold Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink for

Atletico Madrid reportedly paid a fee of £15m to sign the prolific marksman from Leeds ahead of the 1999/00 season, after he had spent two years in Yorkshire.

That meant that they made a huge profit on the £2m that they had paid to sign him from Boavista in 1997, but the fee would have been even greater in the modern age.

Per Totally Money’s algorithm, the £15m that Atletico Madrid paid for Hasselbaink in 1999 would be worth a staggering £51.7m in today’s money, which is over £11m more than Brighton spent on Rutter this summer.

This shows that Leeds hit the jackpot when they signed him for £2m because they ended up selling him for a fee that has ended up being the most valuable fee they have ever received for a centre-forward in the club’s history, if you adjust for inflation.

The Whites also struck gold with Hasselbaink because they got two incredible seasons of service out of him in the Premier League and enjoyed his terrific goalscoring exploits before they cashed in on him for a significant fee.

Whereas, Leeds moved on Rutter for a gigantic fee this summer after a season of service in the Championship, rather than in the top-flight.

Hasselbaink scored 35 goals in 47 matches for Atletico Madrid before joining Chelsea for £20m in 2000, which would work out at around £51.6m in today’s money, and he went on to score 87 goals in 177 matches for the Blues.

Former Whites star Crysencio Summerville thinks the young gem is “really good”.

This shows that, financially, Leeds did not miss out with the Netherlands international, as – adjusting for inflation – the Spanish side did not make a significant profit on him.

Pace-setters Titans and Super Giants tussle for top spot in clash of the IPL newbies

Super Giants are coming off four wins on the trot, while Titans’ momentum was hampered with two straight losses

Do Gujarat need Hardik the bowler back?

Big Picture Eleven matches. Eight wins. Three losses. The two IPL newbies – Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans – are only separated by net run-rate on top of the points table, and a win on Tuesday will propel one of them to 18 points and help cement their playoffs spot. While Super Giants are coming off four wins on the trot, Titans suffered consecutive defeats against lowly-placed Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings. Having lost the match against Mumbai by a small margin, there were a few positives for Hardik Pandya’s men, with Shubman Gill and the captain back among runs after failures in the recent games. A stable batter at No. 3 is still a concern for them, but thanks to match-winners like David Miller, Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan, Titans have managed to stay ahead in the playoffs race.Having played many games where the results could have gone either way, a third loss in a row might start to affect Titans’ confidence and their aim of a top-two finish in the group stage. With Wriddhiman Saha providing them with quick starts, Titans will want to seek consistency from Gill and Hardik.LIVE in the USA

Chelsea made an approach to sign Ivan Toney from Brentford during the last week of the transfer window, before the Englishman joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, and Todd Boehly also attempted a blockbuster last minute deal for Victor Osimhen.

The Nigerian, who was one of Serie A's most prolific goalscorers of the last few years, was forced to settle for a loan move to Turkish Süper Lig champions Galatasaray – after transfers to both Al-Ahli and Chelsea collapsed at the eleventh hour.

Chelsea made a summer deadline day bid to sign Osimhen, as reported by Fabrizio Romano, but the Blues couldn't quite finalise a deal in time for the 25-year-old to make a Premier League move.

While Osimhen's proposed move to Stamford Bridge is off for the time being, ex-Chelsea midfielder John Obi-Mikel has revealed the player's desire to join, and disappointment they couldn't get it done before 11pm that day.

“I know what Victor wanted, I know what the club offered him, I know where we got to, we finally got to a compromise, both sides had to compromise, I was just some little things here and there, paperwork, medical, and a few issues we just couldn’t get over the line and we didn’t have much time," said Obi-Mikel on Osimhen's failed Chelsea move.

“Both sides really played their part in terms of getting the deal done, and I commend Chelsea for that because I can see their ambition of where they want to take this club now and also on Victor’s side, how much he really wanted to come to the club.

“He was disappointed it didn’t happen. I spoke to him when the transfer window shut, I gave him a call, we spent 20 minutes talking, I said, ‘listen, I’m always here for you, you need to keep your head down, you need to keep working hard, keep training, I know it’s not the best situation right now but I know you’re strong’.

Chelsea set for free run over signing Osimhen in 2025

While the African has joined Galatasaray on loan for the rest of this season, Osimhen's contract has a break clause, which allows certain interested clubs to swoop for him in January.

His new Napoli release clause is also set at around £63 million, so this could be a very good opportunity for Chelsea if they wish to reignite their interest at the turn of the year. GiveMeSport claim Chelsea will also have a free run over signing Osimhen, following Arsenal's decision not to pursue a winter deal for him.

Colin Graves backs Yorkshire reforms, saying 'club must move on'

Former chairman backs governance changes that will return Test cricket to Headingley

Colin Graves, the former chairman of Yorkshire, and a man whose family trust has been at the centre of a row over governance reforms at the club, says that he backs the crucial changes required to ensure the return of international cricket at Headingley.Yorkshire was suspended by the ECB from its major-match status in November, with all of its major sponsors severing their ties as well, following Azeem Rafiq’s revelations about a culture of institutional racism at the club. With a new chairman, Lord Kamlesh Patel, at the helm, the club has been striving to meet an ECB-imposed deadline of March 31 for the reinstatement of this summer’s Test match against New Zealand and an ODI against South Africa – without which, Patel has warned, the club would face a stark financial crisis. However, two attempts to hold an Emergency General Meeting to usher through the necessary reforms have been kiboshed by Patel’s opponents – chief among them another former chairman, Robin Smith, whom Patel accused of attempting to “delay and derail” the process. But Graves – whose family trust is owed approximately £15 million following a bail-out in the early 2000s – has told the BBC that the county “needs to move on”.”As a Yorkshire vice-president and member I have voted to support the changes as outlined by YCCC to its members,” Graves told the BBC. “I really hope that the legal advice taken by the club on these issues is sound and solid.”The club now needs to move on, and get back to staging international matches and playing cricket at the highest level in England and Wales.”The talent that Yorkshire continues to produce is outstanding, as shown in the recent West Indies Test match where four out of 11 players came through the Yorkshire academy.”Graves’ comments come after Patel last week warned Tom Harrison, the ECB chief executive, that his position was being made untenable by Smith’s obstruction. In particular, he feared being made personally liable for millions of pounds in compensation, following the dismissal of 16 members of Yorkshire’s back-room and medical staff at the height of the crisis last year.In a statement the ECB said it was “deeply concerned about reports of division at Yorkshire CCC”.”Given all that we have heard from Azeem and others about the club, it has been absolutely clear that reform is needed,” the statement read. “Lord Patel has set out a significant and serious plan to make Yorkshire CCC a modern and diverse club capable of representing and engaging all communities in Yorkshire.”We want to see all parties work together to support Lord Patel in the reform package he has set out. It is not acceptable for anyone to stand in the way of progress at YCCC.”Julian Knight, the chair of the parliamentary select committee that has been conducting an inquiry into the racism allegations, added: “Lord Patel needs the support of the ECB and the wider cricket community in his battle to change Yorkshire’s culture and I’m pleased that this seems to be happening.”

Forget Solomon & Gnonto: 8/10 star could be Leeds’ next Summerville

da imperador bet: Leeds United fans are slowly but surely adjusting to life at Elland Road without watching the sumptuous skills of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter week in week out, as a new batch of top performers come through.

da wazamba: Back-to-back 2-0 wins for the Whites have certainly calmed down sections of the fanbase that were dismayed by the start the Championship titans had made, as Hull City rolled over in the end for Daniel Farke's men to pick up their first three points at home this season in the league.

There were a number of impressive performers on the day for the promotion hopefuls – who now have climbed up the division to fourth off the back of this second consecutive victory – as Manor Solomon and Wilfried Gnonto proved to be a nuisance all afternoon long for the Tigers to contain.

Solomon and Gnonto's performances vs Hull

Operating down the left flank and the right flank respectively, both the new recruit on loan from Tottenham Hotspur and the familiar Leeds face – who has now penned a new four-year deal – were bright throughout the routine 2-0 win.

The brand new Whites number 14 stood out in particular, not fazed whatsoever by the intimidating Elland Road atmosphere on his debut with his football doing the talking, as Mateo Joseph's opener came about after a tricky run from Solomon then resulted in a cross finding its way into the young Leeds hotshot's path to slot home.

On top of that crucial assist breaking the deadlock, Solomon managed to notch up two successful dribbles on the Elland Road turf, alongside five duels being successfully won as the Israel international operated as a tricky livewire all match for Farke's men.

Gnonto was also near to his best in the 2-0 win but would leave the pitch on the 72nd mark with no goal or assist next to his name, despite tallying up three shots on the busy Tigers net and coming away from the lively contest with an impressive 95% pass accuracy in-tact.

Farke will hope he can rely on these two down the wings to bamboozle Championship defences going forward, softening Summerville's absence in the process.

But, he might well have a different star in his first-team ranks that is also ready to take over the mantle of being Leeds' difference-maker away from the departed Dutchman, as the aforementioned Joseph delivered again up top.

Joseph's performances this season

Seen last season as a player who undoubtedly had a big future at the West Yorkshire club, without ever really making gigantic strides to nail down a first-team spot, Joseph is now a solid name on Farke's team sheet as the lone striker.

Joseph's instinctive finish deep into the second half allowed the Whites to breathe easier, converting his only effort of the game past Ivor Pandur with confidence, after also starring the match before away at Sheffield Wednesday.

Showing a different side to his attacking game away at Hillsborough, with two assists helping his team overcome Danny Rohl's Owls on the road, Joseph could well be the man the Whites can rely on moving forward to score big goals and set up chances when the pressure is ramped up, even with the wide-eyed striker only being 20 years of age.

Summerville was handed his senior Leeds debut back in 2021 when he was still a youngster learning the ropes, however, and he never looked back.

Leeds winger Crysencio Summerville

Handed an 8/10 rating by Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth after the full-time whistle, Joseph will hope he can push on and continue to deliver the goods for Farke's men, as Leeds try to put together a consistent run of form and unearth their new Summerville-like scoring sensation.

The Elland Road youngster could well help to relieve that burden.

Heather Knight has admitted that England were “mentally fatigued” and struggled for motivation in the final two ODIs against Australia with the Ashes’ fate already decided.England were bowled out for 129 and 163 in the second and third ODIs, losing with 88 and 82 balls to spare respectively. They were heavily beaten in the only T20I that was played in full – though posted a competitive 169 for 4 – and were narrowly beaten in the first ODI, with a dramatic, drawn Test match sandwiched in between.Australia retained the Ashes with their victory in the first ODI and England have struggled to strike a balance between playing their best XI and managing their squad with an eye on next month’s World Cup in New Zealand. Sutherland, top order give Australia unbeaten Ashes campaign

“The last two games, we probably haven’t competed as much as we would have liked,” Knight said. “We’ve been a little bit fatigued and not quite us as a side, to be honest.”It’s been a really good series, particularly the start of the Test match and a few really tight games where we went toe-to-toe with Australia but couldn’t quite win those big moments and be ruthless in finishing off games. We put ourselves in opportunities to win matches but weren’t quite able to get it over the line.”[It was an] unbelievable Test match to be involved in – absolutely brilliant. I was proud of the girls how they went about it, but I think mentally it probably took a little bit out of us. It’s the same for both teams and Australia were able to turn it around for those ODIs.”But yeah, I do think the last two games we’ve probably been a bit mentally fatigued – [we’ve had] a couple of injuries kicking around and a few people we’ve had to test a little bit with our eyes on the World Cup. That’s played a part too.”England’s opening World Cup fixture is also against Australia – in Hamilton on March 5 – and their winless run against them in ODIs now extends to six games after consecutive 3-0 defeats in the 50-over leg of Ashes series.Knight insisted that her team had “not become a bad side” and that the opportunity to regain physical and mental freshness before the start of that tournament meant the Ashes result would have little bearing on the World Cup opener.”I don’t think the last two games matter too much,” she said. “Mentally, we found it hard to stay up with the Ashes already gone. Obviously that was our aim. But I believe we can beat Australia on our day, if we get our batting and bowling together, be a little bit more ruthless – but 100 percent believe we’ve got the players to compete in that first game, and it’s a one-off game. It shouldn’t really matter too much.”[This series] was very different to 2019 I think. Our belief and mentality has been totally different. I think we’ve gone toe-to-toe and tried to go at Australia, which I think is a good strategy against them. But we haven’t been able to be quite ruthless [enough] in those big moments and they’re the sort of team that don’t give you too many chances, so when you’re on top you have to nail it down.”We haven’t become a bad side after this Ashes. We have to reassess and go again. [We’ll be] ready for the World Cup and hopefully gain some mental freshness and freshen up physically as well.”
