Josh Rymell's century the centrepiece as Essex trounce Yorkshire

Resounding victory sends Essex into semi-finals after Rymell’s 121 off 130 balls

Not since Dan Lawrence made such an impact in his first season in 2015 had a graduate of the Essex academy made a hundred for the county. That shortfall has now been addressed by two century-makers in this season’s Royal London Cup – Feroze Khushi and now Josh Rymell, both of them encouraging hopes of a new dawn. But how to regard it? The challenge of this tournament is to distinguish the false dawn from the true.Rymell’s 121 from 130 balls was the centrepiece of Essex’s trouncing of Yorkshire in the first RLC play-off – a 129-run victory that secured them a semi-final place against Glamorgan in Cardiff on Monday. For Yorkshire, the last six weeks of the season still bring hopes of success in the T20 Blast and Championship, although as far as four-day cricket is concerned they carry forward a considerable points deficit in to the final group stage. When Lawrence became Essex’s third-youngest Championship century-maker, taking Surrey for 161 at the age of 17, county cricket was still confident in its value and the feat gained considerable attention. Khushi and now Rymell have taken their chance in a much-devalued tournament, and not to recognise that 50-over cricket is now largely developmental is to abandon attempts at proper evaluation.Nevertheless, with county debutants in List A cricket this season now well past the hundred mark, Essex’s batting pair look more persuasive than many. Khushi failed on this occasion, George Hill’s inswinger bowling him through a sizeable gate, but Rymell, who has been promoted from the middle order to opener as the tournament has progressed, produced an expertly-paced innings that belied his years. He now has 287 runs at 57.40, although he would have had considerably fewer has Dom Bess not dropped him off Hill on 36.Bess was one of a handful of Yorkshire players who could confidently expect to get into a full-strength side, but he failed to produce the turn that Essex’s spinners – the part-timer Tom Westley among them – found in reply. Yorkshire were routed by a trio of Essex spinners on a worn surface as they set sail for 318.Their start was secure enough, as they reached 68 for 1 in the 15th over, but Will Fraine and Will Luxton fell to lofted legside hits in successive overs as Simon Harmer and Aron Nijjar enforced a grip that was never relinquished. In seven overs, they shared four wickets at a cost of 20 runs to leave Yorkshire reeling on 88 for 5. Westley then had Gary Ballance lbw on the back foot and picked up a three-for. The margin of defeat could have been much higher were it not for a spot of window dressing from Matthew Revis and Matthew Waite.Yorkshire held Essex for much of their innings: Khushi was the third batter to fall at 108 in the 27th over and Paul Walter’s scratching around thereafter told of an unrewarding season. But Mathew Pillans, a curio among Yorkshire signings, bowled Walter into form with five overs which went for 50.Although Walter departed at mid-off to a leading edge against Revis, Essex added 141 from the last 83 balls. Rymell was motoring by then and found willing accomplices in Adam Wheater (34 from 20) and Harmer (31 not out from 13) as Yorkshire’s bowling fell apart. Only Hill, who floated his medium-pace into the blockhole to good effect, and emerged with 3 for 51, came out with much credit. It was such a delivery that did for Rymell as he attempted a flat-batted scrape to third man.Ballance, back in a captaincy role that has not always sat easily with him, suggested that Yorkshire had bowled well for the entire innings and that everybody would be much better for the experience. Which was nice, even if it did not stand up to scrutiny. Essex, meanwhile, are one game away from their first List A Final since 2008. That is even nicer. But maybe that doesn’t stand up to much scrutiny either.

Mominul Haque admits Bangladesh 'got away' thanks to long batting line-up

“After looking at the pitch, I expected it to turn on the fourth or fifth day, which is why I decided to bat first”

Bangladesh needed eight batters to deal with the first day pitch in Harare, according to their captain Mominul Haque. The visitors eventually won the Test by 220 runs against Zimbabwe, but despite an unusually long batting line-up, they still ran into trouble on the first day, slipping to 132 for 6.Mahmudullah, batting at No 8, led the fightback with an unbeaten 150, and put up partnerships of 138 and 191 runs for the seventh and ninth wickets with Liton Das and Taskin Ahmed, respectively. Das and Ahmed both made career-best scores as Bangladesh finished on 468 in the first innings.Related

The strange silence on Mahmudullah's last day of Test cricket

Mahmudullah shines in Test swansong as Taskin, Miraz hand Bangladesh big win in Harare

“After looking at the pitch, I expected it to turn on the fourth or fifth day, which is why I decided to bat first,” Haque said. “We had belief that our spinners could take advantage of those conditions. It would have been difficult to make a combination in these conditions without Shakib . Looking at the wicket, I thought that some of us might struggle but with a long batting line-up, we could get away from it.”Haque hailed the contributions of Mahmudullah, Das and Ahmed, saying that their efforts made batting very easy for Shadman Islam and Najmul Hossain Shanto in the second innings.”Riyad s partnership with Liton was critical as we were 132-6 at that stage. Riyad played an outstanding innings. Taskin’s 75 was also important to win this Test match.”Staying ahead in the first innings keeps you in the game for long. Shanto and Shadman played well in the second innings without pressure, which is how it should be. I think they utilised the situation very well by batting normally,” he said. The long batting line-up also meant that Bangladesh had only four frontline bowlers in the XI. This, despite Shakib being in the side and Mehidy Hasan Miraz having improved his batting. The team management’s decision to drop Abu Jayed was also called into question.Ebadot Hossain was picked in his place, despite the bowler having taken only seven wickets at an average of 90.71 in seven Tests prior to Harare. Jayed averages 35.13 in 12 Tests, and is generally considered an improved bowler in all conditions. This was the first overseas Test he missed since his debut in 2018.”It was a flat and slow wicket, we preferred a faster bowler like Ebadot. So we decided to leave out Rahi but he is not out for good,” Haque said, while also explaining that they had a hard time dislodging the Zimbabwe batters in the match because the pitch was flat and slow from the second day.”The wicket has been flat since the second day of this Test. We would have leaked runs if we went too hard for wickets. I had to contain the runs and we needed time to bowl them out. More runs would have helped them, not us. One has to take a bit of time to set up batsmen to get them out. I think the bowlers did very well,” he said.Still, it was a welcome win for Bangladesh after losing three of the four Tests this year. Haque said that it would help them to build up towards the second cycle of the World Test Championship, which for Bangladesh begins after the T20 World Cup.”This Test win will build confidence in everyone ahead of the World Test Championship. They would know their role better. We are trying to improve small processes, rather than plan big.”

Sky Sports: Aston Villa now want to sign £25m ace as NSWE go into overdrive

da prosport bet: Aston Villa are now chasing another signing as they look to bolster their ranks this summer ahead of their first season in the Champions League, it has been reported.

Villa go into overdrive

da betobet: Aston Villa and NSWE have been by far the busiest Premier League side since the transfer window opened, despite having little to show for it at present.

Under threat from financial fair play, they have engineered a swap deal with Juventus that will see Douglas Luiz make the move to Turin this summer, while Unai Emery's side will receive Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenchea in return alongside a further 20m euros.

Elsewhere, they are set to sign Ian Maatsen from Chelsea in a deal worth £37.5m, while in a completely separate transaction and in no way related, youth talent Omari Kellyman is heading to Stamford Bridge in a deal worth £19m, having made six senior appearances for Villa.

In two equally unrelated moves, Tim Iroegbunam has headed to Everton in a deal worth £10m, while Lewis Dobbin has joined the Villans from Everton in an £8m move.

There is also the matter of Ross Barkley, who is set to join the club from relegated Luton Town this summer, though it could be that Villa are waiting until the 30th June deadline for financial fair play has passed before making the move official for the Englishman. They are not planning to stop any time soon though, and are already lining up their next target if reports are to be believed.

Villa want Bundesliga forward

Now, Sky Sports have linked Aston Villa with a move for impressive Hoffenheim attacker Maximilian Beier. The 21-year-old attacker enjoyed a fantastic breakthrough campaign, scoring 16 times in 33 Bundesliga games, and was rewarded with a call up to the German national side.

He made his debut in the most recent round of June internationals and came on as a substitute in their final Group A game, which saw them rescue a draw against Switzerland to top the group and set up a last 16 tie with the runners-up in England's group.

Hoffenheim’s sporting director, Alexander Rosen, has praised Beier, claiming that: “Maxi is a super guy and an extremely talented striker. He is incredibly fast, dangerous and can kick really well.”

But there is a release clause in his contract with the German side, believed to sit at €30m (£25.3m). This has attracted plenty of attention from Premier League clubs, with Chelsea and Manchester United among those linked.

Maximilian Beier

Now, it is Aston Villa's turn, with Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg explaining on X that the Villa Park side have a "concrete interest" in the youngster and have "gathered information" about the striker ahead of a potential move, though any deal will have to happen after the European Championships.

This may suit Villa, given their financial issues, and allow them plenty of time to work their way into pole position for a move.

Enquiry made: Chelsea could repeat Lukaku mess by signing £65m star

da realsbet: Despite Todd Boehly wanting to bolster positions all over the Chelsea squad, it seems that the centre forward spot is a priority.

da doce: Plenty of strikers have been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, notably Benjamin Sesko, who signed a new contract at RB Leipzig this week.

The latest rumour includes Jhon Duran from Aston Villa, but he wouldn’t exactly just walk into Enzo Maresca’s best team from the get-go.

There is another target for the Blues but Chelsea could repeat their Romelu Lukaku howler by signing him.

Chelsea’s search for a new striker

According to a report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Chelsea "have an interest" in signing Dominic Solanke.

It’s mentioned that in the last few weeks the Blues have enquired about the striker, who left the club after rejecting a new contract back in 2017.

The English ace could be on the move this summer, with his current side Bournemouth now thinking he may leave before next season.

Solanke does have a release clause in his contract, which currently stands at £65m but only for the big six, which obviously includes Chelsea.

Why Solanke could be a Lukaku repeat

It’s fair to say that Solanke’s performance throughout the 2023/24 campaign was simply spectacular for a striker who played for a mid-table side.

The former Liverpool ace provided reliability, availability, a continuous threat, and most importantly, goals, over his 38 Premier League appearances.

Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

Solanke was one of the deadliest finishers in the division, scoring an impressive 19 goals, which is the same number as Ollie Watkins and more than Mohammed Salah, who netted 18.

However, Chelsea knew all along that one day he’d turn into a fantastic Premier League player, as before he left, he won the Chelsea Academy Player of the Year, scoring 31 goals and providing 12 assists in 33 games during 2014/15.

However, Solanke’s level of output last season is somewhat similar to what Lukaku produced the year before Chelsea re-signed him for £97.5m.

Both strikers would join for a large fee off the back of impressive goal-scoring campaigns, but the former Manchester United ace’s second stint at the club has been a disaster, packed off on various loan spells after scoring just eight league goals in 2021/22.

Falling out with Thomas Tuchel during that ill-fated first season, the 31-year-old has spent the last two years on loan in Italy at Inter and Roma, and right now, his future doesn’t belong at the Blues.

Lukaku isn’t included in the plans for the future, and Boehly will look to move him on this summer as a priority, with clubs from Italy and Saudi Arabia both keen.

Therefore, there’s the concern that a similar outcome could occur with Solanke, as re-signing an ex-player always comes with risks attached, and Lukaku’s impending departure is evidence of that.

Although the Cherries attacker was “superb” last campaign, as dubbed by football scout Jacek Kulig, he’s not proven to be quite as reliable a finisher as the Belgian, as shown by the fact he netted ten goals in 96 PL appearances prior to last season.

Overall, there’s no doubt that Solanke is a quality striker, but is he really the type of player that’s going to take Chelsea to the next level?
