Arsenal suffer first Premier League loss against Liverpool

da mrbet: The Gunners fell to defeat for the first time in the 2025/26 Premier League season on Sunday afternoon, going down 1-0 against title rivals Liverpool.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s late free-kick was the difference at Anfield, with Mikel Arteta’s side struggling to create from open play. That led to criticism from Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane, and Arteta also rued his side’s lack of killer instinct in the final third.

“You have to put the ball in the back of the net when you have it. We were much better than last year when we drew the game. Much, much better.

“No difference. And today, when we had three, four, five situations inside the box, 1v1, when [Eberechi Eze] is completely through, just to finish the action. We have to put those balls in the back of the net if you want to win the game.

“I am very disappointed with the result but very proud of my players. I think both teams took the game to a level where there were no margins between the two and little happens. A lot of action in many areas, not much in the boxes. And it was going to be decided in one of two actions: an individual error or a magic moment, and it was decided a magic moment.”

Arsenal can axe Martinelli by signing £86m winger who's like "early Henry"

Arsenal could sign a replacement for Gabriel Martinelli on transfer deadline day.

Strong at set pieces, Arsenal lined up with four defenders who could play centrally against the Reds, whereas three powerful midfielders were also named in Arteta’s XI.

Now, another towering defender is set to be unveiled as an Arsenal player with hours before the window shuts.

Romano shares update on Arsenal’s move for Hincapie

The final signing of the summer for the Gunners could well be Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie.

On course to join on an initial season-long loan with a move then set to become permanent next summer for a fee of around £45m, Hincapie’s deal is yet to be announced.

However, taking to X on deadline day, Romano said the two clubs are “exchanging documents” with the Ecuador international in London.

Called a “beast” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, Hincapie, represented by AS1, who also look after Amorim, is on course to leave Leverkusen after 166 appearances. He won the Bundesliga and German Cup under Xabi Alonso in 2023/24 and his arrival could be perfect timing, especially following William Saliba’s injury at Anfield.

Shanto, Shadman stretch Bangladesh's lead after Nayeem's five-for

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh ran each other neck and neck all day, with Bangladesh now 187 runs ahead

Madushka Balasuriya20-Jun-2025

Najmul Hossain Shanto reached fifty close to stumps•Associated Press

After a day-long tug of war, where Sri Lanka and Bangladesh ran each other neck and neck, the first Test will go into day five in Galle no closer to knowing which of these sides has the edge necessary to convert a likely draw into an improbable win.At stumps, Bangladesh lead by 187 runs with seven wickets in hand, and Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim – both first innings centurions – are at the crease. By all intents and purposes, this should mean Bangladesh are comfortably in control – and they are…kind of.The thing with Galle is that one tends to bring many, and there have been periods in this game where batters seemed like they could bat for days, only for that to be followed by spells where wickets fell in clusters.Related

Sri Lanka left waiting for their next great spinner

Nayeem, Shadman improve Bangladesh's second-innings act

This happened on the first morning, and then again on the second evening, Bangladesh losing eight wickets for 94 runs on either side of two massive partnerships worth 401 in total. Sri Lanka meanwhile seemed immune to collapses, stitching together a string of solid stands across their first innings, until this morning when they lost two wickets in the space of the first hour, and then four more in 45 minutes after lunch. It meant that a day that had started with Sri Lanka eyeing a cheeky lead in the hope of putting Bangladesh into bat on a day five Galle surface, and maybe, possibly, perhaps instigating a final-day collapse, ended with them being bowled out for 10 runs short of Bangladesh’s 495.It also meant that Bangladesh now control where this Test heads. A lead of 300 would seem like a minimum requirement, but they will also want to give themselves enough time to bowl Sri Lanka out – two sessions seems like the absolute minimum requirement. But to get to such an eventuality, they might need to score at a quicker rate tomorrow morning than they have all game – but that of course means they would have to risk getting dismissed for far less than that (please refer to the bit about collapses). As things stand, the Bangladesh batters have handled the Sri Lanka spinners and a steadily deteriorating Galle surface admirably. The delivery to dismiss Anamul Haque spun and bounced off the rough, while Shadman Islam – following an assured 76 off 126 – had a Milan Ratnayake seamer jag back sharply from outside off to trap him plumb in front. But in between, both Shadman and Shanto used the depth of the crease expertly. When going back, they went right back, and when coming forward they did so with gusto. Sri Lanka’s spinners for their part were perhaps guilty of a little impatience, not sticking long and persistently enough to those nagging lines around off.Nayeem Hasan took his fourth five-wicket haul in Tests•Sameera Peiris/Getty Images

That could partly be down to the success Nayeem Hasan had achieved earlier in the day. After three days of batting haven, that first ball which pitched on off and spun down the right-hander’s leg stump probably seemed to Nayeem like the proverbial oasis in the desert. But so ravenous was he for more that he diligently pestered that line all morning. And he was duly rewarded when Dhananjaya de Silva tickled a sharp-turner down leg for Litton Das to grab.He saved his best though for Kamindu Mendis, going strong on 87 and looking odds on to add to his catalogue of Test tons, as he pulled out a classic offspinner’s dismissal. Around the wicket, drifting in, dipping on the stumps, and straightening just enough to take the edge on the forward defence.Five balls later Nayeem had one pushed through with the arm to castle Tharindu Rathnayake. Suddenly the young Bangladesh spinner was getting the full Galle experience, the one he’d been told so much about.Fittingly, Nayeem ended the innings, turning one sharply all around Asitha Fernando’s attempted reverse sweep, to bring to an end a spell of verve and precision. It was his fourth five-wicket haul in Tests, and as he fell to his knees on the Galle pitch in worship, you could see what it meant to him – and then his teammates, who swarmed him.Less than an hour prior to that though, Sri Lanka were in the midst of a 79-run stand. A few minutes before lunch, Milan had lofted Taijul Islam down the ground off consecutive deliveries. Kamindu at the other end was doing Kamindu things, punishing anything that was too short or too wide. It meant even a streak of dot deliveries was inevitably punctuated with a boundary. His runs had come with minimal risk, only a missed reverse and pulled six over deep square leg offering any peril.Sri Lanka had looked at the time to be in total control – kind of like Bangladesh do now.

Finger injury prevents Shreyas from fielding against Rajasthan Royals

Shreyas said he was hit on the finger in training on the eve of the match

ESPNcricinfo staff18-May-20252:20

‘PBKS have depth in both batting and bowling’

Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer suffered an injury to the index finger of his right hand in training on the eve of their match against Rajasthan Royals (RR), which was why he didn’t take the field during RR’s chase. Shashank Singh stood in as captain as PBKS registered a 10-run win.Shreyas made 30 off 25 after winning the toss and choosing to bat, but was subbed out for their Impact Player, Harpreet Brar, at the start of the second innings.”Reason is the finger over here. I don’t know what has happened. Yesterday while practicing, I got hit,” Shreyas said at the post-match presentation ceremony, with his injured finger taped up. “I’ll have to go and check what exactly is the issue here.”Related

Nehal Wadhera and Harpreet Brar take Punjab Kings closer to playoffs

PBKS made 219 for 5 on the back of half-centuries from Nehal Wadhera and Shashank. But Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Suryavanshi got off to a flyer in the chase as RR raced to 67 for no loss in five overs. That’s when left-arm spinner Brar broke up the opening stand by dismissing Suryavanshi in the fifth over. He conceded just five runs off his next over before having Jaiswal hole out at long-off in the ninth over. He capped off his performance by castling Riyan Parag in the 14th over to finish with figures of 3 for 22.Harpreet Brar picked off both Rajasthan Royals openers and finished with 3 for 22•BCCI

“[Brar] has been consistent in the nets, coming day in and out for practice sessions. And he wants to do the best for himself and he was hungry for this opportunity,” Shreyas said. “And I feel that today he stepped in and delivered at his best. So, congratulations to him and also his mindset has been tremendous throughout.”While a left-arm spinner bowling to a left-handed batter is generally considered a positive matchup for the batter, Brar was the one to break the game open with the wickets of the two left-handed RR openers.”We practice in nets, how to bowl to the left-hander, and even [PBKS head coach] Ricky Ponting sir has motivated me a lot for this, that even a left-arm spinner can get a left-handed batter out,” Brar said, after being named Player of the Match.”So, I worked on a lot of things. And their plan was clear, that they will charge me a little, they will look to hit me. So, my plan was to put the ball in my area and not make it easy for them to hit it”The way the wicket was behaving, and they are very good players, the way they the powerplay was going. So in my mind, I didn’t want to give them easy boundaries. If they charge me and hit boundaries, then it’s fine. I just didn’t want to give them an easy ball.”

Their new Bowen: West Ham submit bid to sign "dangerous" forward for £34m

da apostebet: West Ham United are entering the new season with a clear need to reinvigorate their squad after a turbulent campaign that saw them finish 14th in the Premier League with 43 points.

da stake casino: The club replaced Julen Lopetegui in January with former Chelsea boss Graham Potter, who signed a two-and-a-half-year contract and is now tasked with building a squad capable of competing at a higher level.

The Hammers have already undergone significant changes this summer.

Star midfielder Mohamed Kudus was sold to Spurs for £55m, leaving a gap in creativity and attacking threat, while Lucas Paquetá, now cleared of all betting allegations, will be keen to repay the club’s support alongside talisman Jarrod Bowen.

West Ham bid for their new Bowen

West Ham are reportedly pursuing a dynamic winger whose flair and vision make him a potential answer to the team’s attacking needs.

Known for his precise dribbling and natural eye for goal, they have been praised for their ability to create chances both for himself and teammates.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The player in question is Takefusa Kubo, the Japan international currently at Real Sociedad.

Kubo joined Real Sociedad permanently in July 2022 following a series of loans, having already impressed during his initial spell at the club.

Now, according to reports in Spain, Kubo has formally requested a transfer, citing dissatisfaction with Sociedad’s current sporting direction under president Jokin Aperribay.

Kubo has publicly criticised the club’s lack of investment and reinforcements, asserting that the team is not sufficiently competitive to challenge for Champions League qualification. Despite his discontent, Sociedad’s manager Sergio Francisco still regards Kubo as a key part of the team, underlining the challenge West Ham could face in finalising a deal.

Real Sociedad winger Takefusa Kubo

Reports suggest that West Ham are not alone in their pursuit. Other Premier League clubs, including Spurs, Everton, and Bournemouth, are believed to have made offers of £34m.

Named the club’s Player of the Season in 2022/23, Kubo’s contract runs until June 2029, and unless a club triggers his release clause – believed to be just over £50m, – Sociedad may feel little pressure to sell.

How Kubo compares to Bowen

In terms of statistics, Kubo has proven himself a highly productive winger.

In the 2024/25 La Liga season, he played 36 matches, scored five goals, and contributed 45 created chances.

Takefusa Kubo scores for Japan

He completed 75 take-ons, registered 14 shots on target, and recorded 129 touches in the opposition box, ranking in the 86th percentile for crosses with 3.32 per 90 minutes.

His ability to progress the ball and involve himself in the attacking build-up has consistently drawn plaudits from analysts and pundits alike.

West Ham’s potential acquisition of Kubo invites natural comparisons to Bowen, the club’s talismanic left-footed winger.

Bowen is renowned for his pace, movement, technical proficiency, and finishing ability.

Predominantly deployed on the right flank, he regularly cuts inside onto his stronger left foot to shoot or link up with teammates.

According to FBref, during his standout 2022/23 season, Kubo averaged 4.32 progressive carries per 90 minutes, compared to Bowen’s 2.69.

His progressive passes per 90 reached 2.99 versus Bowen’s 1.55, and he averaged 86.3 metres of progressive passing distance per 90, substantially higher than Bowen’s 54.5.

Pass completion rates were similarly competitive, with Kubo at 71% and Bowen at 68.9%.

West Ham United's JarrodBowencelebrates scoring their first goal

Kubo also excels in offensive creation. His shot-creating actions per 90 minutes stood at 3.55, compared to Bowen’s 2.42, while his successful take-ons per 90 were 1.81 against Bowen’s 1.01.

Carries per 90 (31.0 vs. 19.9) and touches in the attacking third (27.2 vs. 17.0) further underscore Kubo’s ability to dominate and influence play in the final third.

These metrics illustrate a player capable of a “dangerous 1v1 threat” in the words of data analyst, Ben Mattinson, but also consistently generating opportunities and driving attacks forward – qualities that mirror Bowen’s influence but with a slightly different stylistic nuance.

The two share more than just statistical comparisons; both are left-footed wingers who thrive in spaces between the opposition full-back and centre-back, using pace and intelligent movement to destabilise defences.

Kubo brings a level of unpredictability and technical finesse, while Bowen combines raw speed and goal-scoring instinct.

Integrating Kubo into the West Ham squad could offer Potter a more multidimensional attacking unit, providing options for both direct goal threats and intricate build-up play.

Financially, a deal for Kubo would represent a significant investment, but it could also pay dividends if the winger reaches or surpasses Bowen’s level of consistency.

Real Sociedad's Takefusa Kubo

With Premier League defences increasingly prioritising compactness, a player of Kubo’s ability could prove invaluable, particularly in unlocking tightly packed back lines.

West Ham’s reported interest in Kubo signals their ambition to sustain and potentially elevate their attacking output.

With Bowen already setting the benchmark on the flanks, Kubo’s arrival could introduce a complementary skill set that reinforces the club’s creative identity while adding depth, versatility, and dynamism to the squad.

Should negotiations succeed, the Premier League could witness a fascinating new chapter in West Ham’s offensive evolution.

Nehra fined, handed demerit point; Hardik fined for slow over-rate again

Ashish Nehra, the GT coach, was penalised for “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game” during the rain-interrupted MI vs GT game at Wankhede Stadium

Abhinav Mukund: ‘GT have got a very good back room in place’

Hardik Pandya and his team-mates (first XI plus the impact sub Karn Sharma) have all been hit with fines for Mumbai Indians’ (MI) slow over-rate in their loss against Gujarat Titans (GT) at home on Tuesday night. For the winners, head coach Ashish Nehra has been penalised for “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game”.In the stop-start second half of the IPL 2025 game between MI and GT, when rain took the players off and brought them back in a few times, MI had to bring an additional fielder into the 30-yard circle for the final over – the 19th – of the chase as is the in-game penalty norm in the IPL. GT needed 15 runs to get off that Deepak Chahar over and got over the line off the last ball.Hardik was fined INR 24 lakh, since this was the second time MI had committed the offence under his captaincy this season. His team-mates were each fined either INR 6 lakh or 25% of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.Nehra, meanwhile, was at his animated best in the dying minutes of the game, when it looked like he wanted the umpires to restart the game after the latest rain interruption. He was fined 25% of his match fee and also handed one demerit point for breaching Article 2.20 of the IPL code of conduct, though the IPL didn’t state what exactly his offence was. This is the second time a coach has been penalised with a demerit point for a breach of the IPL’s code. Munaf Patel, the Delhi Capitals (DC) bowling coach, was similarly penalised after their Super Over win against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Delhi on April 16.Hardik has a lot of compatriots for company: Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, Axar Patel, Sanju Samson, Rajat Patidar and Riyan Parag.
