Crystal Palace now hold strong interest in "gifted" £17m ace, bid planned

da dobrowin: Crystal Palace now hold strong interest in signing a “gifted” defender, with a bid currently being planned, according to a report.

Palace looking to bolster defensive options ahead of European campaign

da cassino: It is still unclear which European competition Palace will be taking part in next season, but they are planning to make one last-ditch attempt to secure a place in the Europa League, and former Everton chief Keith Wyness believes they have a fighting chance.

Wyness said: “The chances are less than 50%, but they’ve got a chance, and I really hope they win. I think they have a case and the Woody Johnson thing can’t have hurt. It does have a bearing on the case because they can say, look, we’ve cleaned up the whole mess with Textor, so please let us go now.”

Johnson, of course, recently bought John Textor’s shares in the club, which Steve Parish will be hoping is enough to win UEFA around, but the situation is complicated, given that the March 1st deadline to change the ownership structure was missed.

"Excellent" £20m forward now open to joining Crystal Palace with talks held

There has been a development in Palace’s pursuit of an attacker…

ByDominic Lund Aug 7, 2025

Regardless of which European competition the Eagles take part in next season, they may need to deepen their squad this summer to cope with the increase in matches, and they have now set their sights on a new target.

That is according to a report from Spain, which states Crystal Palace now hold strong interest in signing Sevilla right-back Juanlu Sanchez, but there could be competition for his signature, with a number of other Premier League clubs also in the picture.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have already agreed a deal with Sevilla, while Everton are also named as potential suitors for Juanlu, who is thought to be valued at a fee close to €20m (£17m).

Sevilla's Juanlu Sanchez in action against Atletico Madrid's Conor Gallagher.

The full-back is expected to make the move to England very soon, and Palace will be hoping he is tempted by a move to Selhurst Park, with an opening bid currently being prepared.

"Gifted" Juanlu could be excellent signing for Palace

Oliver Glasner already has one talented right-back at his disposal in the form of Daniel Munoz, with the 29-year-old putting in some very impressive performances in the Premier League last season, collecting ten goal contributions in 37 outings.

However, there are signs the Sevilla defender could be able to push for a starting spot at Palace, given that he is also a real threat on the front foot, amassing four goals and four assists in La Liga in the 2024-25 campaign.

The 21-year-old, who has been described as “gifted” by reporter Jose Manuel Rodriguez, has also impressed across a number of key metrics over the past year, when compared to other full-backs.

James Anderson to sit out April but refuses to bow out yet

Lancashire’s 42-year-old former England seamer “excited” for new season despite suffering calf strain

Vithushan Ehantharajah01-Apr-20251:30

Will James Anderson be able to play for three more years?

The grand opening of James Anderson’s 24th season of English cricket has been delayed. On Tuesday, it was confirmed England’s all-time leading wicket taker will miss the first month of Lancashire’s County Championship season with a right calf issue. At a time of year when pre-season optimism reaches fever pitch – Lancashire, in this instance, bolshy about their chances of returning to Division One following last year’s relegation – news of Anderson’s injury was a rare dampener. The neatness of a return to Lord’s – site of his 188th and final Test last July, which also happens to be his last competitive match – to play Middlesex in the season opener will not be realised.Damage to the calf – the same one that ruled him out of all but the first session of the 2019 Ashes – was sustained last week, on a pre-season trip to Desert Springs in Spain. It scuppered what had been an otherwise steady stint of training from the start of the year ahead of fulfilling his season-long deal.Related

Anderson set for T20 comeback in new Lancashire deal

Anderson registers for Hundred draft

Gladiator or gimmick? Anderson snub epitomises Hundred's conflicted purpose

“I reckon it’s been about since Christmas, really,” Anderson said at Lancashire’s media day of his prep to date. “It’s been a good block. I’ve been away a couple of times with England, but in between – it’s only been 10 days or so that I’ve been away – it’s mainly been here with the lads training. I feel great. My fitness is as good as it’s been. My bowling’s been good. I’m really excited.”That excitement is genuine. It was around this time last year that Anderson was called to a Manchester Hotel for the meeting where Rob Key, Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes enforced retirement upon him. The time since involved a lot of introspection, especially after his Lord’s swansong. What did he want from his immediate future? Inevitably, the answer was to keep playing. His bowling consultant role with England might have also pushed him towards that decision. There is currently no agreement in place for Anderson to assist England this summer, having done so last year and at the Champions Trophy, partly through his choosing.”I want to give playing a good go, so that’s what I’ve told them,” Anderson said. “I want to prioritise playing cricket for Lancs. If there’s opportunities throughout the summer where they want me to come in and do stuff, we’ll have to cross that bridge.”It would be great to be part of an Ashes trip [later this year]. But if I’m not involved much this summer they might want to go in a different direction.”James Anderson is all smiles for the Lancashire team photo•Getty Images

For all the talk of Anderson’s value to the set-up and the wisdom of 704 Test wickets across 21 years at the very top, it was an awkward union. Just four days separated his emotional walk off into the sunset and reemerging in the shadows, taking the mitt at Trent Bridge for newly ex-team-mates. Less than a week between still believing he could do a job for England and fine-tuning his replacements. The ad hoc nature of Anderson’s role was characterised by his absence in the build-up to the first Test in Pakistan for a pre-arranged golf trip. Indeed, his main takeaway from that tour seems to have been stints bowling in the nets at Joe Root, which helped him preserve his skills.Though the likes of Gus Atkinson, Josh Hull, and even long-time team-mate Chris Woakes, spoke glowingly of his advice from the sidelines, it was always an odd fit. One that would surely only grow odder with Anderson back playing again.Would it dull his mentoring qualities? Perhaps not. But replicating the form he showed for his one-off appearance for Lancashire last season – taking 7 for 35 in the first innings against Nottinghamshire at Southport – would elicit tricky comparisons with those under his care. All being well, he should rout Division Two.Focusing on a return to action, even if delayed by a month, has evidently narrowed Anderson’s perspective. When asked if there had been reflections on his international retirement, his response was curt: “Not really, but I don’t want to dwell on it.” He insists he is not motivated on trying to prove England wrong. His desire to play as much cricket as he has left evident in the two unsuccessful draft attempts in the IPL and the Hundred.”I’m not going to think about that,” he reiterated on what England ambitions he may still harbour. “I think that ship’s well on its way. All I can do is focus on the future and what my job is, which is to play cricket for Lancashire. I’m fully focused on that.”Anderson will not struggle for influence at Lancashire, looking to add to 376 wickets and just five first-class appearances away from a century for his boyhood county. The last time he was as available for this much of a Championship campaign was the summer of 2005, when he played 16 times while also featuring in England squads during that famous Ashes series.Even his longevity brings novelty to the Emirates Old Trafford dressing room. The 42-year old has not only played international cricket with Rocky Flintoff’s father, Andrew, but was also a Burnley CC team-mate of RP Singh, who played two ODIs for India and whose son, Harry, is in the Lancashire squad. And yet, despite the lift he will bring his Lancashire team-mates, it is hard to escape the personal nature of this season, particularly when squaring the conflicts of Anderson’s own ambitions. Proclaiming to be as fit as ever is contradicted by his calf, and the eyebrow-raising claim to the BBC that he would not rule out “playing for another one, two or three years” came not long before he conceded to the written media that this whole thing may be over much sooner.”I could get a month in and think ‘absolutely not’. But I could have a great year, we could win everything, and they might want to keep me next year so we’ll just have to wait and see.”Who knows how long this intriguing final stanza of Anderson’s career will last. Over the coming months, the rest of us will get a clear idea just how brightly a love of the game and its grind burns within him.For the man himself, it feels more about control. Closure, even. Having had his Test retirement taken out of his hands, Anderson can still bow out on his own terms.

Bigger blow than Nunez: Klopp trying to sign "explosive" £50m Liverpool man

da pinup bet: Liverpool have enjoyed a terrific summer transfer window that has put them in a fantastic position to defend their Premier League title in the 2025/26 campaign.

da dobrowin: The headline of the summer so far has, of course, been the arrival of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a British record transfer fee of £116.5m.

Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, and Hugo Ekitike have also arrived as marquee additions to bolster Arne Slot’s options across the pitch ahead of next season.

However, Liverpool have also lost Luis Diaz. The Colombia international recently completed a permanent transfer to German giants Bayern Munich.

Luis Diaz

The former Porto man may not be the only high-profile exit from Anfield before the end of the window, though, as Darwin Nunez may be on his way out of the club.

Al Hilal are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign the Uruguay international, as they are in talks over personal terms with the Reds centre-forward.

Why it is the right time for Liverpool to cash in on Nunez

David Ornstein claims that the Saudi Pro League club have agreed an initial fee of £46m, with add-ons on top, with Liverpool for the striker, who has shown a willingness to accept the move.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

Although it remains to be seen how much money could be recouped from the total transfer including the add-ons, it seems like the right time for the Reds to cash in on the former Benfica star.

Liverpool reportedly paid a club-record fee of £85m to sign the attacker in the summer of 2022, and it is increasingly difficult to justify it as money well spent by the club, based on his performances on the pitch.

Unfortunately, a theme throughout Nunez’s time at Anfield has been unreliable finishing. He has not made enough of the chances that the team have created for him over the last three years.

As you can see in the table above, the £85m signing has underperformed his xG in all three of his seasons with the club, missing a staggering 83 ‘big chances’ in that time.

This is why it may be the right time for Liverpool to move on from Nunez amid interest from Al Hilal, as he has not done enough to suggest that he can be a reliable option for Slot.

Euro club in talks to sign Liverpool midfielder

Meanwhile, the Reds could be dealt a bigger blow as Jurgen Klopp is looking to poach one of their players for one of his Red Bull clubs this summer.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, RB Leipzig are in talks with Liverpool over a potential deal to sign England U21 international Harvey Elliott.

The reporter states that the German side have already made contact with the Premier League champions and are now speaking to them about a move for the left-footed ace.

Ornstein adds that Leipzig are looking to bring him in as a potential replacement for Dutch star Xavi Simons, who may be off to Chelsea this summer.

Harvey Elliott celebrates for Liverpool

The Athletic’s article reveals that Liverpool are willing to sell Elliott for £40m if a buy-back clause is included as part of the deal, or for £50m without one.

Given Klopp’s job with Red Bull and his connections at Anfield, the German boss could have a part to play in this possible transfer of his former midfielder, as Leipzig look to poach him this summer.

Why losing Harvey Elliott would be a blow for Liverpool

Unlike Nunez, Elliott would not be leaving the club because he has not been good enough on the pitch for Liverpool. Instead, it would be in search of more game time.

The English starlet only played 28 times in all competitions during the 2024/25 campaign, and only started two matches in the Premier League for Slot. He was a useful player when called upon, though, with a return of five goals and three assists from a central midfield position.

Liverpool's HarveyElliottcelebrates

Elliott is still a young player who is developing and improving all the time, though, at the age of 22. This means that Liverpool have not seen the best of him yet, which is why cashing in on him now would be a big blow.

It would mean that Leipzig would potentially benefit from his potential by offering him the chance to play regularly in Germany, rather than the Reds getting to see him blossom by increasing his game time at Anfield.

The left-footed magician’s performances for England’s U21s at the European Championship this summer suggest that he is now primed to have a breakthrough season as a key player for whoever he is playing for next season.

As you can see in the table above, Elliott was prolific for his country from a midfield position throughout the tournament, averaging a goal every 95 minutes.

The English gem, who was described as “explosive” by Slot, has the potential to emerge as a brilliant attack-minded midfield star, who can both score and create goals, as evidenced by his 11-assist haul in the 2023/24 season for Liverpool.

Liverpool'sHarveyElliottcelebrates after winning the Premier League

This is why losing Elliott this summer would be an even bigger blow than losing Nunez to Al Hilal, because he is an impressive young talent with the potential to grow into a top player for the club, whereas the former Benfica man has already had plenty of chances to impress and failed to take them.

Liverpool still need to sign a centre-back in the summer transfer market.

ByAngus Sinclair Aug 6, 2025

Therefore, Liverpool should reconsider cashing in on Elliott before the end of the summer transfer window, as he has the quality to be a great option for Slot to call upon in the 2025/26 campaign when needed.

Man Utd submit bid for “special” star who’s like Scholes & Keane

da bet sport: Manchester United have had plenty of struggles over the past decade, with their lack of a dominant midfield being one of the biggest.

da pixbet: During the glory days of Sir Alex Ferguson, the midfield laid the foundations for success, with Roy Keane and Paul Scholes very much at the heart of it.

The duo are regarded as two of the best midfielders to have graced the Premier League, and together, they were formidable, winning 191 matches over 322 that they played alongside each other.

Therefore, the prospect of Sir Jim Ratcliffe signing a player who’s like Keane and Scholes rolled into one must be extremely exciting.

Man Utd’s search for a new midfielder

As per a report from Portuguese outlet Record, via The Faithful MUFC, Man United are looking to secure their first signing of the summer, Joao Neves.

It’s reported that the Red Devils have already made a £51m bid for the talented midfielder; however, it’s unfortunately been rejected already.

Benfica midfielder Joao Neves.

Benfica are holding out for around the £85m mark for their star prospect, as he has a release clause of £102m.

However, United will have to beat the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea in order to sign Neves.

How Neves compares to Scholes and Keane

Since breaking into the first team at Benfica during the 2022/23 season, Neves truly cemented himself as an incredible prospect last campaign.

The talented Portuguese featured in 55 matches across all competitions, including six times in the Champions League and the Europa League.

Over these appearances, he’s scored three goals and provided two assists, but serving as a creative outlet and a goalscoring threat isn’t his main instruction.

Neves’ role in Benfica’s side is to play in a double pivot of a 4-2-3-1 formation, where he’s expected to control the game while also providing support defensively.

As you can see from the table above – which takes statistics from Keane's 1994 World Cup campaign and Scholes' exploits at the 2002 World Cup – Neves has plenty of similarities to both United legends, especially when comparing the numbers.

Firstly, Neves is an extremely technical player who knows exactly how to control a game, often dropping deeper to progress play while rarely losing possession, as shown by his passes completed, touches, and pass accuracy.

This is certainly similar to Scholes, who was also a master with the ball at his feet. Football analyst Ben Mattinson also stated that there are similarities between the two in terms of adding “technical ability to their midfield, help improve their build-up & become a key player to lead them.”

However, what makes Neves so "special,” as further dubbed by Mattinson, is the fact that he’s also extremely dominant from an out-of-possession perspective, and his defensive stats back that up.

This is where his Keane-like attributes come into the picture, due to his tenacious and relentless approach that has made him be labelled as a “warrior" by scout Jacek Kulig, which we all know the Irishman was, as shown by the clip below.

Just like the Irish icon, Neves can cover ground with ease, and he also has the hunger to win with a slight aggression, as highlighted by the duo’s duels won per game.

When combining all of his qualities, it’s clear to see that Neves plays in a similar way to both Scholes and Keane, and despite his insane fee, a player with such class must be signed.

CSK pick three spinners and bowl against MI in Chennai

CSK picked three spinners for their first home game of the IPL 2025 season against Mumbai

Rayudu: The MI-CSK rivalry is real

Chennai Super Kings won the toss in Chennai and had no reservations deciding to chase in their IPL 2025 opener against Mumbai Indians. The pitch wore a sheen and looked hard as against the expectations from CSK, who have three quality spinners in their line-up.Suryakumar Yadav, the MI stand-in captain, said he would have batted first anyway because there hasn’t been much dew around due to windy conditions in the night. There were two exciting newcomers for MI. Well they built them up at any rate. S Raju was the fast bowler expected to be their death specialist, and left-arm wristspinner Vignesh Puthur was a possible Impact Player when they start their defence later in the night. On a day that had been excellent for at least one Jharkhand wicketkeeper, MI handed a debut to Robin Minz to make it three Jharkhand wicketkeepers in IPL action on the same day.The third one, MS Dhoni, of course continued to be a leader for CSK without a title. As is the case usually with CSK, they were not handing out any debuts, banking instead on experienced players. R Ashwin came back to the team representing his beloved home town of Chennai.
