He can revive Palmer: Chelsea ready move for "the best player in the world"

da wazamba: A position often heavily scrutinised in Enzo Maresca’s system at Chelsea are his wingers, who are tasked with holding the width in the early stages of build-up, pinning opposition fullbacks and looking to isolate them 1v1 at any given chance.

da mrbet: However, the profiles of wingers Chelsea currently have at their disposal aren’t the exact archetype Maresca would favour, apart from Noni Madueke who fits the bill.

Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho are slightly different in style, therefore offering a plan B when needed.

Chelsea looking to improve their attack

Adding another direct type winger who is more akin to Madueke on the opposite side could take Chelsea to another level next season, giving them directness on both flanks to force the issue and create high xG chances.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

So, it will come as no surprise to learn they’re after one of the finest wingers in European football right now.

Indeed, according to reports from Spain, Chelsea are one of three teams who are ‘ready to make a move’ for Barcelona forward, Raphinha, with the Blues identifying the Brazilian winger as a “priority target”. The other two clubs interested are Manchester City and Saudi side Al Hilal.

The Blues were in for Raphinha back in 2022 prior to his move to Barcelona, with the Brazil international opting to join the Spanish outfit instead after leaving Leeds United for a fee of around £55m.

FC Barcelona'sRaphinhacelebrates scoring their fourth goal

Raphinha has made 49 appearances for the Spanish giants in all competitions this season, scoring 30 goals, providing 21 assists and totalling 3,952 minutes played.

Barca are still on for the treble this season, and achieving this could see the 28-year-old become the front-runner for the Ballon D’or.

How Raphinha could benefit Cole Palmer

Cole Palmer has found himself in a bit of a rut this second half of the season, still having 14 goals and nine assists in 39 appearances this campaign, but going without a goal for the past three months, last scoring against Bournemouth back in January.

This campaign has been very different for the 22-year-old star, often being man-marked and focused on by opposition pressing schemes, limiting his time and space on the ball.

One thing that could help to open up those alleys of space Palmer loves to operate within is the addition of more relentless runners, something the Blues have missed at points this season. This is where Raphinha comes in.

Stats taken from FBref

When looking at the Brazilian’s underlying numbers alongside Chelsea’s central creator, you can see the former receives 10.8 progressive passes per 90. This is a big indicator that he is a focal point and outlet for Barcelona, often looking to penetrate the opposition’s defensive line with runs in behind.

This is exactly what Palmer needs in order to stretch the spaces between the opposition’s first two lines of contact, the first being their forwards/midfielders in the pressing unit, and the second being the defensive line.

Raphinha has even been labelled as “the best player in the world” this season by Statman Dave, and his incredible willingness to be direct and run beyond is one of his key characteristics as a player. Not to mention he’s scoring by the bucket load and creating heaps of goalscoring opportunities for his teammates.

Palmer has looked at his best when linking up with Nicolas Jackson and Madueke this season, Chelsea’s two most relentless runners in the front line, willing to run in behind in order to create space for the England international.

FC Barcelona'sRaphinhacelebrates scoring their fourth goal

As a result, another with Raphinha would only benefit the England international, making it harder for teams to cut off his preferred zones of space.

New Zealand, Pakistan and a semi-final in the spirit of 1992

One team topped the group, the other barely made it, just like it was three decades ago

Karthik Krishnaswamy08-Nov-20225:01

Uthappa: Split Babar and Rizwan, make Haris open

Big picture
There are parallels. They may not mean anything, but they’re there, if you’re the kind of cricket fan who looks for them. And if you’re a Pakistan fan, you’re always looking for parallels to 1992.Well, here are a couple. New Zealand began their tournament with a big win over Australia. New Zealand topped their group table (yes, there were no groups in 1992, but let’s not nitpick), losing only once before the knockouts. New Zealand’s No. 4 was, and is, the tournament’s leading batter (according to no less an authority than Smart Stats.)And then we come to Pakistan. A Pakistan who were all but out of the tournament, only for forces beyond human comprehension – , you might say – to carry them into the semi-finals. They come there fuelled by pace, left-arm swing, and wristspin, among other things (things that don’t quite match the just-like-92 theme), tigers who are cornered no more. There are other ways to look at this contest, but we have a detailed Tactics Board for that. It’ll tell you that batting first could be a significant advantage, that New Zealand will want to bowl short and into the pitch at Pakistan’s batters, that Shaheen Shah Afridi vs Finn Allen could be a key battle. All of that will play a role in Wednesday’s clash at the SCG. But there will also be other forces at play, at least in our imaginations. New Zealand’s history in World Cup knockout games. The history of New Zealand-Pakistan knockout games at World Cups. . The law of nature.Whatever will be, will be as nature wills it.* After Pakistan’s loss to England in the third T20I in Karachi in September, their head coach Saqlain Mushtaq reacted in inimitably philosophical manner at his post-match press conference. ” [It’s the law of nature, it’s not in our control]” Widely mocked in social media in the immediate aftermath of their utterance, the words gained an entirely new connotation after South Africa’s shock upset at the hands of Netherlands paved the way for Pakistan to reach the World Cup semi-finals.Form guide

Smart stats – Phillips and Suryakumar soar, Babar struggles

In the spotlight
Tim Southee and Trent Boult have been in four World Cup finals across the three formats, but they’re yet to get their hands on a white-ball trophy. This could be their last chance, and they could do something about it if they get the new ball moving around against Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, who are under immense pressure individually and as an opening combination at this tournament.Mitchell Santner has only bowled seven balls to left-hand batters at this World Cup so far. Pakistan have the tools with which they can put him under pressure, if they deploy Shan Masood and Mohammad Nawaz at the right time. Much as they did to counter the threat of Shakib Al Hasan, they could promote Nawaz up the order and hold Mohammad Haris back.Kane Williamson (31 off 36 balls, one dismissal) and Daryl Mitchell (13 off 15 balls, one dismissal) have struggled against legspinners at this World Cup. How they handle Shadab Khan through the middle overs could be a key battle.Tricky for left-hand batters, handy with the bat too – should Bracewell make the XI?•Associated Press

Team news
New Zealand resisted the urge to pick the offspin-bowling allrounder Michael Bracewell against left-hander-heavy teams during the Super 12s stage, so it seems unlikely they’ll pick him with Masood and Nawaz in mind. Expect an unchanged XI, barring any last-minute injuries.New Zealand (possible): 1 Finn Allen, 2 Devon Conway (wk), 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Glenn Phillips, 5 Daryl Mitchell, 6 James Neesham, 7 Mitchell Santner, 8 Tim Southee, 9 Trent Boult, 10 Ish Sodhi, 11 Lockie Ferguson. After their narrow defeat to India in their opening game, Pakistan decided to sacrifice the extra batter in order to play the fourth quick. As tempting as it may be to strengthen their batting depth in a knockout game – by bringing in, say, Asif Ali for Mohammad Wasim – it seems unlikely they’ll change a combination that’s worked for them.Pakistan (possible): 1 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 2 Babar Azam (capt), 3 Mohammad Haris, 4 Shan Masood, 5 Iftikhar Ahmed, 6 Mohammad Nawaz, 7 Shadab Khan, 8 Mohammad Wasim, 9 Naseem Shah, 10 Shaheen Shah Afridi, 11 Haris Rauf.Pitch and conditions
Teams batting first have won five out of six games played at the SCG so far at this World Cup. But there’s one factor that could reduce the impact of the toss: the pitch that will be used for the semi-final is the same one that hosted the Super 12s opener between Australia and New Zealand. It was the flattest and most batting-friendly of the three pitches that have been used so far in Sydney. There is a small chance of rain on Wednesday morning, but the weather should clear up by the time the match is scheduled to start.Stats and trivia
Wednesday’s match will be the SCG’s third Men’s World Cup (50-overs and T20) semi-final. The Daren Sammy National Stadium in St Lucia and the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo have hosted three semi-finals each, while The Oval and Old Trafford have hosted four each. In the powerplay phase of this World Cup, Pakistan have scored at a run rate of 5.93. Only Zimbabwe and Netherlands have done worse since the start of the Super 12s stage. Four members of the Pakistan XI that lost to Australia in the semi-finals of last year’s T20 World Cup have played no part in this edition of the tournament – Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez, Imad Wasim and Hasan Ali. New Zealand were losing finalists in that tournament; from the XI that featured in the final, only Tim Seifert has failed to make their squad for this edition. Martin Guptill is part of their squad but hasn’t featured in their XI yet.Quotes”They’ve got an outstanding pace attack. They’ve been playing some good cricket, they have experienced players and match winners.”
Kane Williamson summaries his opponents ahead of the knockout.”As we know about the weather, when there’s a lull there is also a storm that follows. So look out rest of the world.

Spurs loanee who’s outscoring Son could be a bigger talent than Lankshear

da gbg bet: It’s been a season of extremes for Tottenham Hotspur this year.

da brwin: Ange Postecoglou’s side have looked utterly sensational in some games and have played some of the best attacking football in Europe, let alone England.

Yet, the North Londoners have still found ways to throw matches away, as they did against Galatasaray on Thursday night following Will Lankshear’s sending-off.

The youngster didn’t make the most of what was a golden opportunity, and he might not get as many next season as one of the club’s other young forwards is currently outscoring him and club captain Son Heung-min out on loan.

Lankshear and Son's seasons so far

It wasn’t the night young Lankshear would’ve hoped for on Thursday.

However, given his lack of top-flight experience and the intense atmosphere in the ground, his sending-off should not see him receive too much stick, especially as before his silly second foul, he was playing reasonably well.

The 19-year-old was the man who got the North Londoners back in the game in the first half, perfectly putting away Brennan Johnson’s pass on the half-volley to score his first senior goal for the club in just his second appearance.

In fact, before he was sent off, it would be fair to say he was playing better than his captain was, as Son never looked likely to provide an assist, let alone score a goal in Istanbul.

However, while he was ineffective on Thursday, the South Korean superstar has remained a relatively reliable attacking threat in his other appearances this season, as he’s scored three goals and provided three assists in his other nine appearances.

That said, even the former Bayer Leverkusen star is being outscored by one of the club’s promising loanees, who’s enjoying a great campaign in Spain.

Spurs' goalscoring loanee

So, there are several talented Spurs players out on loan this season, from Dane Scarlett to Alfie Devine, but in this instance, we are talking about the 21-year-old striker Alejo Veliz.

Alejo Veliz.

The Argentine prospect joined the North Londoners in a £13m deal from Rosario Central last summer after an impressive campaign that saw the youngster rack up a tally of 11 goals and one assist in 24 first-team appearances.

He spent half of last season in N17, scoring one goal in eight games, but the latter half on an unsuccessful short-term loan move to Sevilla, where he made six goalless appearances.

With his long-term future somewhat up in the air this summer, the Lilywhites sent him back to Spain on a season-long loan with Espanyol, and while he isn’t tearing it up in Catalonia, he’s doing far better.

In 11 appearances across all competitions, the promising “phenomenon”, as he was dubbed by Argentine legend and 1978 World Cup-winner Daniel Bertoni, has scored four goals, meaning that, at the moment, he has more to his name than both Son and Lankshear.

Ultimately, it is far too early to say with any certainty that Veliz will become Spurs’ next great goalscorer, but based on his limited minutes this season and the way those in the know speak about him, there is every chance he could be.

Liverpool and Slot now best placed to sign £320k-p/w star for free in 2025

da bet7: Liverpool have now shot to the front of the queue to sign a new attacker for Arne Slot in 2025, it has been claimed.

Questions over Liverpool's attack

da apostebet: It has been a perfect start to life at Liverpool for Arne Slot, with his side seven points clear at the top of the Premier League and having lost just once across all competitions in 2024/25.

That form has been spearheaded by Mohamed Salah, who provided two goals and an assist to help them secure a 3-3 draw with Newcastle United in their most recent outing. Out of contract this summer as things stand, the 32-year-old is currently top of the Premier League goalscoring charts ahead of Erling Haaland, while only Bukayo Saka has more than his eight assists.

However, the season has been less fruitful for Liverpool’s other forwards. Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa have both spent much of it sidelined through injury, while only Luis Diaz has scored more than twice for Slot’s side this season when you take away Salah’s contributions.

With Jota and Chiesa both injury-prone, and Darwin Nunez doing little to impress into his third season at Anfield, Liverpool could be required to add yet more firepower to their ranks next summer, especially if Mo Salah departs the club for nothing.

Now, they have been tipped to secure a former Premier League winner for free.

Liverpool linked with Leroy Sane move

That comes as reports in Spain claim that Liverpool are now best placed to sign Bayern Munich forward Leroy Sane next summer.

The German forward’s current £320k a week deal in Bavaria expires at the end of the season, and he is yet to agree a new one at the Allianz Arena, with a recent report claiming that the German will have to give up as much as €4m euros per year to remain in Germany.

Ignored by Klopp: £32m Liverpool flop is now outscoring Salah in 2024

Klopp sold a star at the beginning of his Liverpool era, and now that very flop is outscoring Mohamed Salah in 2024.

ByAngus Sinclair Dec 6, 2024

That has led to clubs beginning to circle for his signature next summer, and the report claims that Liverpool “are the best placed to sign him as a free agent” should a deal not be agreed, despite previous reported interest from fellow Premier League sides Arsenal and Newcastle United.

Though Sane has struggled with injuries throughout his career, he is a world-beater on his day, with teammate Jamal Musiala dubbing him “one of the best wingers in the world” in 2023.

However, he would likely need to drop his salary if a move to Merseyside was to become a reality, with his current wages in Germany putting him second to only Salah in Liverpool’s top earners.

With Chiesa and Jota both already in the mercurial but rarely fit category, Sane’s arrival seems unlikely unless one of those depart in the summer, but if he could sustain fitness, he could provide another dimension to Slot’s attack.
