Tottenham prepare swap deal for "outstanding" £25k-p/w midfielder – report

Tottenham are reportedly ready to try an audacious swap deal this summer as they look to bolster their midfield on a budget, it has been claimed.

Spurs in need of additions

After a promising season under Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham's Premier League campaign fizzled out and they were forced to accept Europa League football next season, despite at one point seeming nailed on for a return to the Champions League. Now, all attention is set to turn to the summer transfer window, and the club are set to be busy.

Emerson Royal is thought to be free to leave and has admitted to enjoying the reports linking him with a move to AC Milan, while the club have already made their first signing of the summer by making Timo Werner's loan move valid for a further 12 months, extending his stay in north London.

Meanwhile, Tanguy Ndombele and Ryan Sessegnon have both been released, and decisions will have to be made on returning loanees Joe Rodon, Sergio Reguilon and Bryan Gil, all of whom seem to be out of Postecoglou's plans.

Another man expected to leave is Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, who was named man of the match for Denmark during their 1-1 draw with England at EURO 2024.

No decision will be made on his future until after the tournament, but the Dane's agent explained: “I am working on the many requests that we have already received, yes; but we will analyse all the possibilities after the Euros, during the holidays when we will spend some time together and then look forward to the next chapter”.

With that in mind, Tottenham are going to need midfield additions, and now they are trying to find a way to land one on the cheap.

Spurs target swap deal

That comes as The Sun claim Tottenham are eyeing up an audacious swap deal for Southampton's Carlos Alcaraz, in a move that would see Welsh defender Joe Rodon head the other way. Alcaraz was in and out of Russell Martin's side for the first half of the season, though the Saints boss did praise the Argentinian for his performances.

"His mentality has been great", he explained after one performance against Leeds United. “We wanted to free him up a little bit. We did that I think – he was amazing with it. I’m really proud of him and really pleased for him. He was outstanding."

He spent the second half of the season on loan with Juventus though, making three starts in what turned out to be a difficult spell in Turin, and his future seems unclear.

The 21-year-old still has four years left to run on his £25,000 a week deal on the south coast, but The Sun claim that he likely won't be there much longer, with Spurs keen to sign him this summer. Valued at £30m by Southampton, Spurs are willing to offer Rodon, who is wanted by the Saints and is valued at around £10m, in a bid to get a deal done.

However, they may also have to stump up some cash to get it over the line should they be serious about the young midfielder ahead of the new season.

Luke Fletcher puts Nottinghamshire in charge on rain-shortened day

Derbyshire lose five wickets in 47 overs’ of play, but arguably fared well in tough conditions

ECB Reporters' Network04-Jul-2021Derbyshire have work to do to post a competitive first-innings total after a rain-affected opening day of their LV= Insurance County Championship match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.Propping up the Group One table after failing to win any of their first eight matches, Derbyshire made 91 for 5 from the 47 overs that were possible, Matt Critchley making 23 and Luke Fletcher taking two wickets to draw level with Durham’s Chris Rushworth as the competition’s leading wicket-taker with 40 scalps. On a strip so green it needed three stumps at each end to identify it as the one in use, a Derbyshire side badly hit by injuries and failing form would have anticipated a difficult day after Nottinghamshire won the toss and chose to bowl first. In the circumstances, a scoreboard showing 44 for 3 at lunch felt like one that could have been worse.Fletcher soon had Luis Reece pushing at one that found a thin edge, and Brett Hutton trapped Tom Wood in the 12th overs with a full delivery but the home attack bowled too many balls that could be safely left alone in a twice-interrupted opening session and had to wait until the over before lunch to claim another breakthrough. This time Brooke Guest chased a widish ball from Lyndon James, giving a second catch to Ben Duckett, deputising with the gloves for Tom Moores who, in common with Joe Clarke, is self-isolating under Covid protocols.Critchley and Leus du Plooy began to rebuild after lunch before the next band of showers arrived, keeping the players off the field for two hours and 40 minutes. Derbyshire may have wished it had been longer as two more wickets fell in the first 17 balls after the resumption.Captaining in a first-class match for the first time in the absence of Billy Godleman, Critchley had taken three boundaries off Hutton before the stoppage and and was looking to continue in similar positive vein but perished via a sharp low catch at third slip off 19-year-old Joey Evison, in for the rested Jake Ball, whose first spell of the season comprised four maidens.Fletcher then picked up his 40th wicket of the season as Harvey Hosein was leg before to his second ball, leaving Derbyshire 76 for 5, but only 38 more minutes’ play was possible. The visitors will resume with Du Plooy, who was dropped by Duckett on 14, having faced 108 balls for his 21 not out.

Jonty Rhodes takes the T10 route, from Sweden to Abu Dhabi

Jonty Rhodes is used to soaking in the sun back home in South Africa around Christmastime. This year, he’s in chilly Sweden, teaching amateur cricketers the finer aspects of the game. The Swedish Cricket Federation has ambitious plans of being among the top Associates and want to create pathways for cricketers, male and female. With Rhodes as head coach, scout, man-manager and trainer all rolled into one, the federation is hoping to form a pool of players who will take cricket to the next level in the country. Among Rhodes’ immediate priorities is to ensure home-grown talent comes up.Related

  • Kumar Sangakkara: 'T10 a format that might be pushed forward' to get cricket into Olympics

  • 'I literally was competing only with white players' – Rhodes

“At Sweden, I’m not just the national coach, but I’ve got to also look after the pathways from junior cricket to Under-19s to women’s cricket because there are only four paid professionals at the Swedish Cricket Federation,” Rhodes told ESPNcricinfo. “I’ve got players from Sweden who originate from Pakistan, Afghanistan, India. There aren’t too many locals, so that’s something I’m looking to push for. If you can harness that diversity, it’s a huge asset to have.”With most of their cricketers employed elsewhere, Sweden are some way off even a semi-professional structure. But though cricket is mainly restricted to the weekends, the number of registered clubs is on the rise, and the association is looking to popularise the shorter formats. While T20 is tops, T10 has taken root too. It’s a brush with T10 that got Rhodes to accept another challenge – in January, he will be a part of the Pune Devils franchise as their head coach in the Abu Dhabi T10 tournament. There, he will link up with the likes of Thisara Perera, fresh off a title-winning run with the Jaffna Stallions in the Lanka Premier League, and the recently retired Mohammad Amir.”Interestingly, Sweden has a lot of T10 cricket,” Rhodes pointed out. “They don’t have many facilities, but there are a lot of clubs who want to play on weekends. It’s too drawn-out to facilitate 50-over cricket. All the players registered with us are working professionals, so they only have the weekend off. So both T20 and T10 is a big part of the Swedish cricket make-up.”For me, I’ve got to get as much experience from this shortened version, even if it isn’t from an ICC point of view, because Sweden isn’t participating in a tournament currently. I’ve worked as a sponsorship manager when we introduced the Pro-20 in South Africa in 2004. I’ve been a stakeholder in T20s for a long time, so I’m looking to try and see that adjustment is very quick in T10 as well. It’s a different format, there are players who have more experience than I have [Perera and Amir], so I’m also looking to learn from them.”Rhodes will leave mid-January to be part of a bio-bubble in Abu Dhabi for the weeklong tournament before returning to Sweden. Having already been involved with the Mumbai Indians and the Kings XI Punjab in the IPL, apart from regular stints in Zimbabwe, Nepal, Kenya and Malawi, Rhodes said it was the search for newer ideas, fresh perspectives that helped him stay interested in the game.”I retired in 2003, and immediately started working with Standard Bank as a sponsorship manager. I didn’t really get back into cricket for six years. I retired thrice, which is crazy, but I could never leave it because this is a game I’m so passionate about,” he said. “Hopefully, 20 years later, I’m still throwing balls around, scoring, umpiring or doing something in cricket.”Initially, I thought I’d walk away from cricket completely, until the IPL came along. I started with Mumbai Indians in 2009 as fielding coach, did it for nine seasons. After that, a two-year break helped me from a journey point of view.”I spent a lot of time developing the game at the grassroot structures as opposed to working with high-performance players or teams. That for me was an eye-opener. I spent time in Nepal, Malawi, Zimbabwe, in different parts of South Africa – places with passion for the game but with limited facilities. Yet, it doesn’t diminish people’s love for what they do. That’s been a part of my journey.”

KL Rahul, the spectacularly unmemorable bro who deserves limelight

India’s wicketkeeper-batter has been remarkably good at what is less remarked on

Andrew Fidel Fernando01-Nov-20231:58

Kumble: KL Rahul looks like he’s back to his original self

Someone to help you move your books to a new apartment, an ear to vent to about your battles at work, a pick-up from the side of the highway when your vehicle breaks down, an arm around your shoulder after a break-up. For these and other wholesome acts of friendship, call KL Rahul. Not seriously, because obviously he doesn’t have time for the likes of you. Although, you sense, perhaps he’d like to.It’s been that sort of World Cup for Rahul – a player who even at his strokemaking finest has the bearing of someone producing the sweetest and most thoughtful support act. In the match against England, as Rohit Sharma took the lead on raising India from 40 for 3, Rahul was massaging his way to a 39 off 58 as the two produced the most consequential stand of the match. Their 91 together was more than the scores of England’s top seven combined.Related

Tendulkar's lofted drive immortalised at the Wankhede

Against New Zealand, his 27 off 35 had helped arrest a potential slide, against Pakistan he made a perfectly adequate 19 not out in a small chase. Memorably, against Bangladesh, he had partnered Virat Kohli in the late stages of a chase. When Kohli was nearing a 48th ODI hundred, and only a few runs were remaining to complete the chase, Rahul convinced Kohli that they shouldn’t take singles off his own bat, to leave Kohli with enough remaining runs to get to 100.Kohli, we’re told, had refused at first. But how could you say no to Rahul? “I said, I mean it’s not won but still I think we’ll win quite easily. So if you can get to the milestone, why not? You must try it,” this is what Rahul told soon after the match ended. “I wasn’t going to run the singles anyway.”Sometimes it’s not enough to just offer buddies your support. Occasionally, you must insist that they need you. You got your hundred in the end, didn’t you, big guy? See? Knew you had it in you. With gloves on, Rahul has occasionally been memorably spectacular, but mostly spectacularly unmemorable. The former when he dived down leg to pouch in the tips of his left glove’s webbing, a catch off the inside half of Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s bat that had been travelling especially rapidly. The latter, pretty much anytime else, gobbling the remaining five catches that have come his way, plus effecting a straightforward stumping against England.KL Rahul has stepped up with the bat in crucial times in India’s World Cup campaign•AFP/Getty ImagesPerhaps you could point to the six byes across six matches, or the missed half-chance off the bat of Daryl Mitchell off Ravindra Jadeja in the 30th over of New Zealand’s innings in Dharamsala. But that was a catch beyond the reflexes of all but the wicketkeeping geniuses.Rahul has instead willed himself to excel at the the dull stuff: keeping low, reading from the hand, getting himself into strong positions by making footwork the foundation of his keeping. When you keep this way, you dive only occasionally, draw little attention, but generally end up with the ball inside your mitts. In that Dharamsala match, he had also fired in an excellent under-arm throw to run out Lockie Ferguson, as New Zealand attempted a bye. Typically this came after Mohammed Shami had already completed his five-wicket haul earlier that over. Don’t steal your bro’s thunder; never leave ’em hanging. If Rahul’s keeping has not made major splashes elsewhere, it has certainly had recognition within the team. He has twice been the recipient of the “best fielder of the match” medal, for which India have had increasingly elaborate presentation ceremonies. It has also allowed India to strengthen their batting against spin, Suryakumar Yadav coming in following the injury to Hardik Pandya, with India happy enough with Rahul’s keeping to keep Ishan Kishan – who keeps wicket more often than Rahul at the lower levels – not required in the XI.Rahul is much more than just a support player of course; his 97 not out off 115 against Australia had been among the first rumblings of India’s campaign, which has since become an avalanche. In fact, this year the guy averages 74.70, with a strike rate of 84.69 – not beta numbers. There was also the hundred that came against Pakistan, in the Asia Cup.But when team-mates have bossed the limelight, and all that was required of Rahul was to do the little things that keep a team ticking, he has been remarkably good at what is less remarked on.

Phil Foden's wedding plans?! Man City star spotted ring shopping with girlfriend Rebecca Cooke after engagement rumours

Manchester City star Phil Foden has sparked wedding rumours after being spotted ring shopping with girlfriend Rebecca Cooke. The pair were reported to have become engaged after returning from a romantic holiday earlier this year; Cooke was spotted wearing an engagement ring while the pair entered the jewellers in the affluent Cheshire town of Wilmslow.

AFPFoden sparks wedding rumours

Foden and Cooke have been a relationship since they met as teenagers, and they have three children together. Rumours of an engagement between the pair started in Februrary, after Cooke was spotted wearing a diamond ring in February after a New Years Eve trip to Paris. The couple have not officially announced their engagement, however, their recent trip to the jewellers appears to confirm their upcoming nuptials.

AdvertisementSource: "Massive wedding" expected

A source told in February that the pair had agreed to marry after their romantic getaway to France. They commented: "The pair of them have been together since they were young and their family and friends have been expecting them to get engaged for a while.

“The time seemed right for Phil to pop the question. He took her away to Paris for New Year’s Eve and when they came back Rebecca had a sparkling diamond ring on her engagement finger.

“The ring is absolutely huge. It’s a massive diamond. She loves it and she’s very proud of wearing it although she hasn’t announced anything about it.

“But all the wags know and all the players know in Manchester about the ring and everybody is looking forward to maybe an announcement soon that something has happened, maybe an engagement.

“It would certainly be a massive wedding full of footballers and celebrities and Wags.

“Rebecca loves a party and has hosted some amazing baby showers.”

Foden's personal life not impacting his play

This is the latest development in the reporting around Foden's personal life. The City star has had to sell his eight-bed Cheshire mansion below the asking price, as he and Cooke relocated to a more secluded house in the countryside. The luxury abode was at the centre of controversy, as the 24-year-old was said to have thrown family parties that sparked multiple noise complaints from his well-to-do neighbours. Cheshire Police were called at one stage, as locals complained the Foden residence was louder than Glastonbury.

However, the stress of shifting his £3.25m digs, does not sseem to have had a negative impact on the playmaker's on-field peformances. After a sub-par outing last term, Foden has been enjoying his football again. Last month, the Cityzens star admitted he had "got his smile back" after a tough year, while England manager Thomas Tuchel promised a "central role" for Foden after omitting him from recent Three Lions squads.

Despite those assurances, there are still question marks over Foden's place within the German's starting lineup for next summer's World Cup.

He will have to continue separating the tumult in his personal life with his performances on the pitch. Foden's season continues on Saturday as City take on Leeds at the Etihad.

Rangers: "Genius" similar to Brian Clough frontrunner for Ibrox job with Gerrard

Glasgow Rangers have made a “genius” compared to the legendary Brian Clough a frontrunner for the Ibrox vacancy alongside former Gers boss Steven Gerrard.

Steven Gerrard holds positive talks over Rangers return

Rangers are now on the search for their fourth manager of 2025, with the 49ers Enterprises’ move for Russell Martin lasting just 123 days.

Martin was sacked by Rangers following Sunday’s 1-1 Scottish Premiership draw with Falkirk which has left the Gers on just eight points from their opening seven league games.

Rangers have recorded just one league win during that time, with chairman Andrew Cavenagh and vice-chairman Paraag Marathe already opening the process of hiring Martin’s successor.

One name who has been heavily linked with a move to Ibrox is Gerrard, who enjoyed three years in Glasgow before departing for Aston Villa, winning Rangers’ only Scottish Premiership title in the last 14 years.

Manager who sued Barcelona enters Ibrox frame as Rangers' manager search rumbles on

He could be a shrewd appointment by the Gers.

ByHenry Jackson Oct 7, 2025

It has been reported that Rangers have already held positive talks with Gerrard over a sensational return to the club, although negotiations are thought to be complex.

Gerrard isn’t the only candidate on the Rangers shortlist, though, and it has been revealed that he is joined by one manager at the top of the Ibrox wishlist.

Sean Dyche another frontrunner for Rangers job with Gerrard

According to The Scottish Daily Mail, relayed by Ibrox News, Rangers are keen to act swiftly and appoint a new manager as soon as they can.

It is claimed that as well as Gerrard, Sean Dyche is the other frontrunner for the Rangers job, with the ex-Everton manager keen on a move to Ibrox.

Dyche, called an “absolute genius”, has been out of work since January after leaving the Toffees, where he was replaced by David Moyes.

The 54-year-old, who plays a 4-2-3-1 system, has plenty of experience in England with Burnley, and during his time with the Clartes, he was even compared to former Derby County and Nottingham Forest manager Clough by ex-winger Michael Kightly.

By the looks of things, either Dyche of Gerrard could well be the manager in charge of Rangers following the international break against Dundee United at Ibrox on 18 October, providing this latest claim is accurate.

Crystal Palace eyeing marquee signing of "incredible" £40m Eze replacement

Crystal Palace are now looking to sign an “absolutely incredible” attacking midfielder, who could be brought in as a replacement for Eberechi Eze, according to a report.

Tottenham reach agreement in principle to sign Eze

After the 27-year-old scored the winner in the FA Cup final, Palace were always going to find it difficult to keep hold of Eze this summer, and journalist Ben Jacobs has now revealed Tottenham Hotspur have made significant progress towards finalising a deal.

As such, one of the Eagles’ most important tasks before the September 1st deadline will be to bring in at least one new attacker, and there is certainly no shortage of options on the shortlist.

Tzolis is arguably the most exciting option on the shortlist, given the Greek forward’s attacking exploits in the 2024-25 campaign, albeit in a weaker league than the other targets.

However, according to a report from Caught Offside, Crystal Palace also have their eye on another Premier League attacker, namely West Ham United’s Lucas Paqueta, who is now set to be available for around £30m – £40m this summer.

West Ham are now willing to cash-in on Paqueta, and they have dramatically dropped their asking price, having fielded offers of £80m at the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

Crystal Palace eyeing "clinical" £70,000-p/w Asian star as Eze replacement

The Eagles now look set to lose Eberechi Eze, with Tottenham Hotspur submitting a bid…

By
Dominic Lund

Aug 19, 2025

The Eagles view the Brazilian as a marquee signing, who could offset Eze’s departure, but there could be competition for his signature from some top clubs, with both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City also named as potential suitors.

Paqueta could be "incredible" Eze replacement

The 27-year-old has certainly caught the eye in the Premier League in the past, with ex-teammate Declan Rice lauding him as “absolutely incredible”, while David Moyes described the Brazil international as “fabulous”.

Since then, the maestro hasn’t exactly kicked on, scoring just four Premier League goals last season, but in fairness, the former Lyon man did have spot-fixing charges hanging over his head, which he has now been cleared of.

Graham Potter believes a weight has now been “lifted” off the West Ham star, which suggests he could have a new lease of life next season, and given that he specialises in attacking midfield, he could be a direct replacement for Eze.

Crystal Palace's EberechiEzecelebrates scoring their first goal before it is disallowed after a VAR review

With West Ham making a very poor start to the Premier League campaign, Paqueta could be tempted to leave this summer, and Palace should have the requisite funds to sign him once the deal to sell Eze is completed.
