£42m star now expected to join new club as Arsenal scouts really impressed

Arsenal’s main focus for now is securing Champions League qualification alongside their run in the latter stages of the competition, but Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta are already eyeing potential summer arrivals.

Arsenal's summer search for attacking reinforcements

Despite their best efforts, the Gunners look set to come up short in their hunt for a first Premier League title since 2004 after a frustrating campaign that hasn’t lived up to expectation.

Mikel Arteta has a right to bemoan Arsenal’s lengthy list of injury problems, which have left key men such as Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus sidelined for the last few months. This has led the Spaniard to cultivate makeshift solutions in certain positions, including Mikel Merino’s emergence as an auxiliary striker.

The former Real Sociedad man has had his moments through the middle. Still, attacking reinforcements across the front four positions are necesarry if the north Londoners are to become long-term title contenders moving forward.

Finding the right blend of youth and experience has to be the priority – Bayern Munich star Leroy Sane has become an Arsenal target to help bolster competition within the ranks come the summer.

Arsenal’s big hitters missing due to injury

Kai Havertz (out for the season)

Gabriel Jesus (out for the season)

Bukayo Saka (potential April return)

Takehiro Tomiyasu (out for the season)

Financially, they will also need to adhere to FFP regulations like everyone else. The Germany international could be available on a free transfer, though his track record will likely attract plenty of interest from other clubs should his contract at the Allianz Arena run down without renewal.

On a positive note, Ethan Nwaneri has become a shining light on the right-hand side. However, strength in depth is the aim for Arsenal to overcome their shortcomings, so it will come as no surprise that Arteta and company have set their sights on another winger.

Arsenal set sights on summer move for Lyon star Malick Fofana

According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal have set their sights on Lyon’s Malick Fofana as Arteta looks to spruce up the wide areas despite competition from Liverpool for the Belgium international, with scouts returning positive reports after watching him in action.

Reportedly open to taking on a new challenge, the report says ‘it’s hard to imagine him staying at Lyon for much longer’, but the Gunners may need to pay a fee in the region of £42 million to sanction his arrival. Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus are also receptive to his form.

Labelled an “energetic dynamo” by French journalist Walid Acherchour, the 19-year-old has registered nine goals and five assists in 34 appearances this campaign.

Likely to be one for the future, Fofana’s engenuity has allowed for 18 successful dribbles and 12 crosses delivered across the season alongside his 74 touches in the opposition area.

Arsenal will have faith in their ability to nurture his talent, but will need to decide whether they want to spend a large chunk of their budget on an upcoming star as opposed to someone in their peak years.

Warner, Maxwell one-two knocks Netherlands out cold

It was a massive win, with Maxwell scoring the fastest century in World Cups, and Bas de Leede delivering the most expensive over in men’s ODI history

Vithushan Ehantharajah25-Oct-20233:11

Pujara: ‘Once Maxwell gets going nobody can stop him’

It was the most brutal of one-twos. First came David Warner with the jab, then Glenn Maxwell with the “lights out” uppercut. A 104 from the opener had the Netherlands weary, but it was Maxwell’s astonishing 106 from just 44 deliveries that administered the most devastating of knock-out blows. Australia posted 399 for 8, standing triumphantly at the halfway stage over floored opponents, who were unable to rise off the canvas, eventually succumbing to a chastening 309-run defeat – the largest in margin in men’s ODI World Cup history.Just 18 days after Aiden Markram had seized the record for the fastest century in ODI World Cups, against Sri Lanka at this very ground, Maxwell ripped it off him in nine fewer balls, needing just 40 to pass three figures. It was the culmination of an almighty assault on the Dutch bowlers, most notably Bas de Leede. The talented allrounder now has the ignominy of the most expensive figures in men’s ODIs, returning 2 for 115 – 43 of them coming in his last two (including 28 from the last), all courtesy Maxwell.Beyond saving the blushes of compatriots Mick Lewis and Adam Zampa – previous joint-holders of the most expensive figures in the format – Maxwell’s second World Cup century (and third overall) shifted the complexion of the match against a courageous Netherlands outfit. They had broadly kept Australia in check, even while Warner, coming off the back of 163 against Pakistan in the previous match, marched to a 22nd ODI hundred.ESPNcricinfo LtdWarner’s main allies were Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, the more dominant partners in stands of 132 and 84 for the second and third wicket, respectively. Had Max O’Dowd not botched a pick-up at midwicket, Warner might have been run-out on 32 when both he and Smith found themselves at the non-striker’s end. Roelof van der Merwe was then adjudged to have grounded a sharp chance at midwicket when Warner had 73, before completing an equally tough grab at backward point to see off Smith for 71.Labuschagne’s dismissal – de Leede’s first, caught mid-off – was the first of three to fall for just 23 runs, culminating in Warner’s dismissal, paddling Logan van Beek to fine leg, well-taken by Aryan Dutt, two balls after registering a sixth World Cup century off 91. With ten overs to go, Australia were 268 for 5.Maxwell had come in at the end of the 39th over – the latest an ODI centurion has arrived at the crease – but only faced his first ball midway through the 41st. In retrospect, the back-to-back fours off de Leede to get him off the mark were a sign of things to come.He was probably culpable for Cameron Green’s run-out, pushing for two only for the allrounder – drafted in for Marcus Stoinis, who had a sore calf – to be found short of his ground with a direct hit. After Teja Nidamanuru failed to get to a difficult chance running back from mid-off when Maxwell was on 24, the carnage began.Adam Zampa got himself a third successive four-for•AFP/Getty ImagesFrom 35 off 21 – already a brisk start – Maxwell got out his reverse sweep for the first time to get Paul van Meekeren away over point, before smashing the follow-up slower ball over square leg for the first of eight sixes. Another reverse over point – this time all the way – brought the fifty up in 27 deliveries, before going over third two balls later, both off de Leede.A brace of conventional sixes followed in the 48TH over, bowled by van Beek, carted over wide mid-on and then sliced over cover point, sandwiching a pull to midwicket by Pat Cummins, possessor of the best seat in the house. Then came de Leede’s chastening final set; bunted down the ground for fours to start, before being launched into the stands at wide mid-on, over square leg and then further behind square after bowling an above-waist full toss as Maxwell stormed through to three figures. From first six to last, the white-ball phenom struck 66 runs from just 19 deliveries. Maxwell celebrated with a baby-rocking celebration, a nod to his wife and first child, Logan, who was born last month, both of whom arrived in India earlier this week. The free-hit was uncharacteristically scuffed for a single, de Leede getting out of the over with a dot to Cummins. Though Maxwell was able to begin the final over with a fortuitous boundary off van Beek, his innings ended two balls later courtesy of an excellent catch by Sybrand Engelbrecht at long-off. Mitchell Starc came and went for a golden duck – van Beek’s fourth – leaving Cummins, who had contributed just eight to the seventh-wicket stand of 104, to close out the innings with just his second boundary, smeared through midwicket.ESPNcricinfo LtdWith 400 to get, Netherlands opener Vikramjit was never going to die wondering, racing to 21 from 13 courtesy five fours. And though he would survive a run-out opportunity after O’Dowd left him high and dry with a dodgy call, saved by Josh Hazlewood’s awry throw after fielding in his follow-through, he was less fortunate on 25. A well-timed back-foot punch to mid-off found Maxwell, who had started the chase off the field, and, well…. you know what happened next.By then, O’Dowd had chopped Starc on to his own stumps. Colin Ackermann then fell lbw to Halzewood, before de Leede’s grim day was compounded with an appeal against Cummins for a similar dismissal that Hawkeye suggested was trimming leg stump. Engelbrecht’s seemingly perfect pull shot off Mitchell Marsh’s second ball nestled into hands of a leaping Warner just in front of the square-leg sponge, leaving Netherlands 62 for 5 at the first drinks break. The pause on the wickets lasted just 27 deliveries. Nidamanuru was unfortunate enough to glove Marsh down the leg side, then Zampa snared two-in-two, as van Beek cut to Josh Inglis and van der Merwe was trapped in front by a googly. Dutt survived the hat-trick ball – another googly – with a thick inside edge.He had no such luck when struck in front while on the back foot in Zampa’s next over. The legspinner then secured a third four-wicket haul in a row when Inglis managed to shovel the ball back on to the stumps after van Meekeren’s back foot had crept in front of the line following an attempted sweep. With that, Netherlands were 90 all out, their final five batters falling for just six runs. All the while, skipper Scott Edwards cut a forlorn figure at the other end. He will know a defeat of this magnitude will not define his team, though they now occupy an unflattering spot on the wrong side of history.

Ferguson must now instantly drop Clement’s "error-prone" Rangers star

Will a change of manager signal a change in fortune for Ibrox side Rangers?

On Sunday night, following the weekend home defeat at the hands of St Mirren, it was announced that Philippe Clement had been sacked as manager of the Gers, having been, as Findlay Marks of the Scottish Football Show put it, a “dead man walking” ever since the Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Queen’s Park.

The following morning, the club confirmed that former captain Barry Ferguson, who made 409 appearances for the Gers across two spells, would be in interim charge for the rest of the season, alongside Neil McCann, Billy Dodds and Allan McGregor, all of whom are also ex-players.

The Ferguson-era begins at Rugby Park on Wednesday, a ground at which Rangers have lost six of 12 visits since December 2017, so they certainly cannot take Kilmarnock lightly, and the new caretaker boss’ first big decision should be to drop a stalwart of the starting lineup.

The Rangers star Ferguson must drop

Jack Butland joined Rangers in June 2023, simply looking to reinvigorate his career, having played just 17 matches across the previous three seasons, spending the second half of the previous campaign bench warming at Manchester United.

Fair to say he made an instant impression in Glasgow, pulling off a string of outstanding saves, instantaneously known colloquially as ‘Super Jack Butland’.

That is because, Christopher Jack of the Rangers Review believeds he ‘has been a huge figure between the sticks’, asserting that Butland is ‘the best keeper in Scotland by some distance’, while Stephen Halliday of the Times simply labelled his performances as ‘outstanding’.

Meantime, Ewan Murray of the Guardian notes the Englishman has been a ‘virtually an ever-present since joining’, while Archie Rhind-Tutt of ESPN & TNT Sports thought his ‘excellent form’ was going to earn him an England recall, having not featured for the Three Lions since September 2018, although this ultimately did not come to pass.

However, in more recent times, as Joshua Barrie of the Rangers Review puts it, ‘Butland’s form has suffered’.

Speaking on Sky Sports, new Rangers assistant manager Neil McCann described his performance at Motherwell in December as “unconvincing”, the goalkeeper’s ‘blushes spared’ by the fact the Steelmen had a late winner disallowed by VAR for rather soft foul by Tony Watt.

Butland has made a few high-profile mistakes, gifting Celtic the Scottish Cup back in May with former Rangers striker Ally McCoist describing his own goal at Old Trafford in January as a “howler”, leading to journalist Luke Hatfield labelling him ‘error-prone’.

This led to him being heavily criticised by supporters, so let’s analyse how Butland’s numbers compare this season to last.

As the table outlines, Butland’s statistics are unanimously worse this season than last, with his post-shot xG – goals allowed figure having nosedived from almost +2 to around -1.5, this the biggest indicator of his drop-off in form.

So, should new manager Ferguson unleash Butland’s deputy at Rugby Park on Wednesday night?

Jack Butland's back-up ready and waiting at Rangers

Back in early January Butland missed the New Year’s Old Firm due to internal bleeding, a match in which Rangers demolished fierce rivals Celtic 3-0, putting in, by far, their best performance under Clement.

Deputising for Butland that day was Liam Kelly, who was described as ‘reliable’ and ‘assured with the ball at his feet’, while Laura Brannan of the Scottish Football Show believes the 29-year-old to be a ‘fantastic’ goalkeeper.

As well as a clean sheet in the Glasgow derby, Kelly also enjoyed shutouts against Dundee and Aberdeen leading to, as noted by Aasif Rahman of Football Insider, supporters questioning why Clement has restored Butland after the understudy had ‘proven himself’ during the Englishman’s absence.

Since arriving from Motherwell in the summer, Kelly has made seven appearances in a Rangers jersey, keeping three clean sheet and conceding just six goals, making nine saves, which translates to a save percentage of 69.2%, higher than Butland’s aforementioned season figure of 63%.

Kelly himself stated “I’ve done alright”, adding he is “looking to go under the radar” by doing “whatever I need to do when called upon.”

Thus, with little left to play for in the Premiership, Ferguson should certainly give his backup goalkeeper opportunities to prove what he can do.

5 Rangers youngsters Barry Ferguson can now unleash at Ibrox

With Ferguson replacing Philippe Clement, he could turn to the club’s youth ranks as Rangers look to salvage what they can from their season.

Woakes' four-for holds together the day for England

Australia 299 for 8 (Labuschagne 51, Marsh 51, Woakes 4-52, Broad 2-68) vs EnglandFor a cricketer so often shorn of the limelight, the opening day of this fourth Ashes Test at Emirates Old Trafford was one hell of a moment for Chris Woakes to set himself apart.Stuart Broad became only the second seamer to make it to 600 Test wickets, following James Anderson who returned to the XI for what could well be his last appearance on his home ground. But it was Woakes, with 4 for 52 to give England a foothold in this match, who stole the show. Australia’s 299 for 8 means neither team can say with any real confidence that they are in control– a recurring theme throughout this compelling series. But Woakes’ performance ensured Australia were never allowed to get too far ahead.Coming into this match on 598 career dismissals, Broad trapped Usman Khawaja lbw before bouncing out Travis Head five balls after tea to reach his milestone. His 18 dismissals this series have seen him emerge as the banker in a constantly tweaked attack – he is the only England bowler to have been selected in all four matches – covering for the fact that Anderson has struggled, with just three wickets so far. That the 40-year-old was without success today was merely down to luck, beating the bat numerous times, along with the odd inside edge that evaded stumps. Nevertheless, his current series average is an eye-watering 89.66.Related

Woakes’s display, however, held everything together. Having made a strong impression in last week’s victory at Headingley to cut down Australia’s lead to 2-1, the Warwickshire allrounder took over as leader of the attack. David Warner, off the back of an engaging start, was snicked off for 32, before Woakes ensured the enginge room of Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Green and Alex Carey had false starts.Indeed it was the wicket of Marsh which felt most crucial. Having reached 51, the Western Australian was squared up for an edge which was brilliantly taken by Jonny Bairstow. The wicketkeeper, who had an untidy day behind the stumps, stuck out a right hand after veering to his left, pouching the ball at full-stretch. It was the first time Marsh has passed fifty against England and not made it to three figures, having done so for a third time in the third Test. That Ben Stokes won a fifth toss of the summer was one thing, but upon choosing to bowl, he followed up seduction of luck with a flirtatious wink at history. No side has ever called correctly, stuck the opposition in and finished on the winning side in an Ashes Test at Old Trafford.Having spoken before the match of the need for his side to go hell for leather over the next five days given a woeful weather forecast, Stokes will be happy they have made as many inroads as they have on an uninterrupted opening day of 83 overs. And while they can credit themselves for keeping Australia in check, the tourist will reflect on opportunities spurned to control this match from the get-go.They were 61 for 1 after 14 overs before Warner was dismissed for an engaging 32. At 120 for 2, Steve Smith fell lbw to Mark Wood for 41. When Marnus Labuschagne, having pocketed his first half-century of the series, and Head (48), were in the midst of a rebuild, both were dismissed in the space of 23 deliveries for the addition of just six runs to leave Australia 189 for 5.Then came some immediate de-ja-vu as the biggest stand of the innings so far was broken on 65 when Cameron Green was trapped lbw by Woakes, who then removed Marsh four balls later to make it 255 for 7. Carey’s edge attempting to leave Woakes for the second innings in succession brought the skipper, Pat Cummins, to the crease, joining Mitchell Starc who looks set. With questions over Warner’s place in the XI before Australia opted to drop Todd Murphy and bring Green back in, the left-hander began with the verve of a man hell-bent on repaying that faith. The first ball of the innings, a loosener from Broad, was carved to the extra cover boundary for four. This was the first time in 15 years that England have bowled first in a Test featuring Anderson and not given him the first over. Given Broad and Warner’s history, it made sense to go against convention. And with Anderson opening matters from the James Anderson End, that quirk made up for any perceived slight.Warner looked in good touch, particularly when whipping a short ball off Woakes through square leg with ease for his third boundary. It meant by the time he was dismissed – Bairstow taking a regulation catch off Woakes, who was bowling at Warner from over the wicket – there was a platform in place to allow Smith and Labuschagne to bat at their own pace.A stand of 59 had Smith as the aggressor, a role he assumed at the very start of his knock when he hooked the first ball from Woakes over Wood at backward square leg. Had the Durham quick not charged in, he might have been on the fence to take the catch. Instead, it bounced once before crashing into the advertising boards. Both batters would make it through to lunch before Wood struck five overs after the break to make amends for his eagerness. Smith strayed outside the line to work a delivery to the leg side, only for extra pace through the air and nip off the surface to trap him in front of off stump. Umpire Joel Wilson did not give the decision on the field, and it was only after Stokes called for a DRS review that the impact with the pad, and projected path of the ball into the stumps, confirmed Smith needed to be sent on his way.Labuschagne’s dismissal required similar confirmation from the television umpire. Wilson again turned down the on-field appeal, this time after Moeen Ali had turned one into the right-hander who had pressed forward. Too much turn might have been the issue, but down came confirmation the top of leg stump would have been struck.Moeen Ali and England celebrate as Marnus Labuschagne is given out on review•Stu Forster/Getty Images

Labuschagne was understandably crestfallen. He had grafted for his half-century from 114 deliveries, a 26th Test score of fifty or more, after what has been a poor six innings so far by his lofty standards. His patience to make this knock count was evident in the 62 deliveries between his fourth and fifth boundary, which was timed crisply through cover, breaking a streak of 20 balls without a run.At the other end, Head was emerging out of the usual barrage of short balls with decorum, making it to 48 having worn blows from Wood under the armpit second ball and then on the helmet, via a deflection off his shoulder, when on two. After some expertly guided boundaries through the leg side, he was able to convince England to go short to him. And after making it to tea on 47 from 62, he emerged slack to meet a short ball from Broad with an uncontrolled hook behind square. Joe Root scampered around from fine leg to take a smart catch.Though England did not miss any clear-cut chances, the botched opportunity to run out Marsh on 35 from Stokes, when the former was sent back by Green, could have been terminal. Marsh looked in the same mood as he did when he struck 118 in the first innings at Headingley. And maybe only a man in this kind of form, having struck seven fours and a gorgeous straight six off Moeen, could have got anything on the delivery served up to him by Woakes in the 63rd over.A bit of movement in, followed by seam away drew the merest tickle and provided those in the stands with the most spectacular moment of the day. Bairstow’s troubles this summer are well known, and it spoke of the support his team-mates have for him that all charged towards him after pulling off one of the catches of the series. The crowd, too, were particularly buoyant, though only when the jaw-dropping nature of his one-handed take was replayed on the big screen were they able to fully gauge what Bairstow had done.

Harmanpreet Kaur calls for more women's Tests

India’s captain also wants red-ball matches to return to domestic cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Aug-2023India captain Harmanpreet Kaur has called for more women’s Tests as well as a resumption of long-duration domestic cricket in India. Harmanpreet, 34, is broadly representative of the top-level women’s cricketer of her time in how many games she’s played in each of the three formats: only three Test matches to go with 127 ODIs and 154 T20Is.India are scheduled to play only two Test matches in the 2022-25 women’s Future Tours Programme (FTP) cycle, both at home in the 2023-24 season, against England and Australia. Only four teams will play Test cricket during this cycle, with India playing the fewest behind England (five), Australia (four) and South Africa (three).”As a player, I definitely want more Tests because as a growing kid, we saw more Tests on TV than T20s,” Harmanpreet said while interviewed on the . “Nowadays it’s a lot of fun playing T20s but Test cricket is something every cricketer wants to play.”This year we have two Tests – one against England and one against Australia – and I hope those games can make a huge impact on women’s cricket and hopefully in the future we will keep getting more Test matches. We have to bring back Test matches in women’s cricket because it’s very important for women’s cricket.”Related

The last time there was multi-day domestic women’s cricket in India was in 2017-18, when the BCCI conducted an inter-zonal three-day tournament as well as an inter-zonal Under-19 two-day tournament. While Harmanpreet is happy with how far domestic women’s cricket has come since her early years, particularly with the start of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), she hopes long-duration cricket will resume soon.”Trust me, [domestic cricket] has improved a lot,” she said. “Initially when I started playing, we hardly got domestic games but for the last couple of years, domestic level has improved a lot. We are getting more games and some domestic games are live also, people can watch on TV.”It is improving day by day but in my early days we used to play two- and three-day games which we are really missing, and I’m sure after these two Test matches hopefully we’ll get two-day matches back. The more cricket we get, the more improvement we’ll see in women’s cricket.”Definitely it’s improving day by day and [I] hope to see some more talent in the Indian side. As you mentioned WPL was a game-changing moment for us, the tournament was so good, everyone loved it back home, we had a great experience and hopefully next year we’ll get some more young talent who can take this cricket higher.”After years of players voicing their desire for a women’s franchise T20 tournament along the lines of the IPL, the WPL got underway in 2023, with the Harmanpreet-led Mumbai Indians winning the title.”Yes definitely it’s a little late, to be honest, but something is better than nothing,” Harmanpreet said, when asked if it had taken too long for the WPL to get off the ground. “At least it started and started in such a way that everyone liked it. Maybe we were a little scared, [wondering] what if people won’t like it, but the response we got for WPL, some of the audience, they were more interested in women’s IPL than men’s because it was something new to watch and they really liked it. Hopefully, after some years, we’ll add more teams, more players.”

Nat Sciver-Brunt starred again – this time in a winning cause – with her second successive century in three days as England defeated Australia in the final ODI at Taunton to win the 50-over leg of their Ashes series 2-1.Sciver-Brunt followed her unbeaten 111 off 99 balls on Sunday in Southampton, where Australia won by thee runs, with a pivotal innings of 129 as the hosts prevailed in a rain-affected final game. She shared a 147-run stand for the third wicket with Heather Knight to rescue England from a perilous 12 for 2 and, along with Danni Wyatt’s rapid-fire 43 off 25 balls, helped lift the hosts to 285 for 9. It was their joint-second-highest ODI total against Australia, who originally needed to produce their second-highest successful 50-over run chase to win until rain halted play for nearly an hour during their pursuit and forced a revised target of 269 from 44 overs.Kate Cross claimed three wickets and had a hand in running out the dangerous Ashleigh Gardner, while Charlie Dean and Lauren Bell took two each as the Australians were bowled out for 199, consigned to their first defeat in a bilateral ODI series in a decade. England also won the T20I leg 2-1 but it wasn’t enough to win back the Ashes, held by Australia since 2015 and retained on this occasion with the overall series drawn on eight points all.Bell removed opener Phoebe Litchfield in the second over, Sophie Ecclestone snaring a low catch at slip and Cross beat Alyssa Healy’s defences with a wobble-seam delivery that came back in from outside off to clip the top of middle stump as Australia slumped to 15 for 2 and Healy ended the tour with just two scores above 16 from nine innings, including her half-century in the Test where she also scored a duck.Sciver-Brunt bowled a wayward over in the 13th with three wides which tested wicketkeeper Amy Jones, who then effected an excellent stumping off the bowling of Ecclestone, who lured Tahlia McGrath forward and beat the inside edge, breaking a steadying partnership worth 53 with Ellyse Perry.Kate Cross picked three key wickets and was involved in running out the dangerous Ashleigh Gardner•PA Photos/Getty Images

Perry looked threatening, as she had been in Southampton, passing fifty with a huge six over long-on off a free hit after a no-ball from Dean, the offspinner who had replaced Sarah Glenn in the side after she underwent surgery for appendicitis on Monday. But Cross returned to the attack and struck twice in as many overs with the big wickets of Perry, skying to point, and Beth Mooney chipping to mid off.Gardner eased the pressure by taking 17 off one Bell over, including sixes down the ground and over midwicket followed by two fours in three balls from Cross en route to 41 off 24 balls, but Cross stayed in the action, collecting a sharp throw from sweeper Wyatt and breaking the stumps at the non-striker’s end as Gardner dived in vain attempting a second run and Australia were six down needing 103 from 96 balls. When Sciver-Brunt and Jones teamed up for Georgia Wareham’s stumping, England grasped the momentum. Dean ensured England didn’t give it back, bowling Annabel Sutherland in a wicket-maiden next over and claiming the final wicket of the series, Jess Jonassen lofting the ball to Bell at short third after Bell had had Alana King caught behind.Earlier, Sophia Dunkley extended a lean run in which she has scored just 55 runs in five innings since her 56 in the opening T20I at Edgbaston when she skied a fuller ball from Gardner high over the covers, where Litchfield turned and made good ground running back to take the catch comfortably after Dunkley had faced 13 balls for just two runs. Megan Schutt struck in the next over with a full inswinger that had Tammy Beaumont edging onto her stumps toppling into the splits as the ball struck the timber.By the end of the powerplay, England had recovered to 43 for 2 on the back of the burgeoning partnership between Sciver-Brunt and Knight. Sciver-Brunt brought up England’s fifty with an exquisite drive to the boundary through extra cover off King, whom Sciver-Brunt then dispatched wide of long on, once for four then onto the top of the boundary sponge for six.England managed to score only 16 runs in six overs after the first drinks break but scored 21 off the next two, Sciver-Brunt bringing up her fifty by plundering another four through wide long on off Georgia Wareham and Knight moving to 49 on the charge and lofting Wareham over the rope at long-on to bring up the century partnership. Knight turned a full McGrath delivery off her pads through fine leg for four to bring up her fifty and Sciver-Brunt was on 54 when McGrath put down a straightforward caught-and-bowled chance so that by the halfway point of their innings England were 121 for 2.It was King who made the breakthrough for Australia, enticing Knight down the pitch with a swing and a miss, the ball clattering into her stumps. When Alice Capsey holed out to long-on off Jonassen, Sciver-Brunt faced another rebuilding task and she found a willing accomplice in Wyatt, who injected plenty of energy with her enterprising shot selection and lively running between the wickets. The duo added 66 runs in 43 balls for the fifth wicket, Sciver-Brunt moving to 99 turning McGrath to the fine leg boundary and raising her fourth century in five ODIs against Australia – the other three coming in England defeats – next ball with a single clipped to square leg. Wyatt, meanwhile, added 43 from 25 balls before Gardner produced a brilliant yorker which slid under her bat and crashed into leg stump.Jones was run out by an excellent direct hit from cover by substitute fielder Darcie Brown moments after she replaced King, who went off with a swollen lip when she was struck by the ball while fielding. Sciver-Brunt followed, to a standing ovation, when she picked out Gardner at deep midwicket but she had done a magnificent job for England once again and this time it was enough.

Newcastle eyeing move to sign 6'5 "freak" after completing scouting mission

Already closing in on a deal to sign James Trafford, Newcastle United are now reportedly eyeing a move to sign a towering midfield star who their scouts have already seen in person.

Newcastle "closing in" on James Trafford

It has been far from routine, but Newcastle look set to welcome their second signing of the summer following Antonio Cordero’s earlier arrival. As reported by Fabrizio Romano, the Magpies are “closing in” on securing Trafford’s signature in a deal that will see those at St James’ Park land a long-term target at long last.

Following an incredibly impressive season in the Championship, in which he played a key role in Burnley’s promotion, Trafford looks destined to become Newcastle’s new No.1 ahead of Nick Pope in the coming months.

The England international, who is still just 22 years old, represents an instant upgrade on the ageing Pope and will hand Eddie Howe one of the most promising young goalkeepers that European football has to offer.

It’s not just upgrades between the sticks that Newcastle are targeting this summer, however. Having already missed out on Joao Pedro and given up on their pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo amid his preference for Manchester United, the Magpies have set their sights on some fresh names.

That reportedly includes Anthony Elanga. The Nottingham Forest man instantly entered Newcastle’s radar following Mbeumo’s rejection and they’ve since had an offer rejected by those in the Midlands for his signature. Even after that rejection though, a deal could still take place with those in Tyneside expected to return with an improved offer.

That said, it’s not just Elanga on the shortlist with reports now suggesting that Newcastle have set their sights on signing a towering midfield star this summer.

Newcastle considering Amir Richardson move

According to NUFC Blog, PIF are now considering a move to sign Amir Richardson after Newcastle completed their scouting mission on the Fiorentina midfielder.

A player with a “freak athletic profile” according to analyst Ben Mattinson, Richardson stands at a staggering 6’5 yet remains an impressive technical player and one that Newcastle should push to sign.

Next Ben Arfa: Newcastle set to bid £50m for "electric" Elanga alternative

As Newcastle chase Anthony Elanga, should they instead go for an “electric” winger, one who is reminiscent of former fan’s favourite Hatem Ben Arfa?

At just 23 years old, the Fiorentina star would be making his biggest move yet by swapping Italy for the Premier League and St James’ Park. Whether he would sink or swim is the big question, but all signs are pointing towards a player full of potential. As Newcastle look to add depth to Howe’s squad, Richardson could be one to watch this summer.
