Clinical Peshawar storm to PSL title

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsIn a nutshellHaving finished runners-up in the inaugural edition of the Pakistan Super League last year, Quetta Gladiators once again found themselves on the wrong side of the result in the tournament final. This time, it was Peshawar Zalmi who trumped them by 58 runs to lift the title. On a pitch where scoring runs was hard work, Quetta needed their batsmen to be smart. Instead, one after the other they perished to extravagant shots. Left-arm spinner Mohammad Asghar, whose flat non-turners fetched him 3 for 16, got two of his wickets due to the batsmen’s profligacy. That’s not to say Peshawar’s bowlers did not earn their wickets. Hasan Ali was skiddy, and found bounce and seam movement off the pitch. Mohammad Hafeez’s variations in trajectory and pace got him a wicket in his first over, an anxious Sarfraz Ahmed stumped, and by the eighth over, half of Quetta’s line-up had been sent packing. The rest of the innings followed the same template, and so swift was the slide that many of the cricket-starved fans in Lahore had already made their way out by the time the match ended. In stark contrast, Peshawar had raced away to 41 in four overs in their start and Quetta were able to apply the brakes only after the spinners came on. As the ball became old, it stopped on the batsmen, and variable bounce came into play, too.Quetta’s spinners were also able to make use of the dry, cracked surface to suffocate Peshawar with timely wickets. Rayad Emrit’s double-strike in the 17th over, which left the score at 112 for 6 helped Quetta seize some advantage in the end overs, and also allowed Sarfraz to keep a slip in place in the 18th over of the innings. But Darren Sammy flexed his muscles as Peshawar clubbed 33 runs in the final two overs.Where the match was wonEmrit, who arrived in Lahore on the morning of the final, sent down a superb three overs for 3 for 13 across two spells, despite jet lag. The start had been exactly as he would have hoped. The finish? Far from it.Emrit was taken apart for 18 runs in his final over, the 19th of the innings, as he got his lengths wrong and was punished by Sammy’s brute force. If the first boundary of the over had been a lucky one that came off the outside edge, the last had Sammy’s signature all over it – a full-blooded, bottom-handed thump that crashed into the sightscreen.Sammy clubbed two more sixes off the final over, picking Anwar Ali’s harmless lengths early and swatting them over long-on to finish with an unbeaten 28 off 11 balls. The late fireworks went a long way towards Sammy winning the Player-of-the-Match award and helped Peshawar recover from 115 for 6 after 18 overs to 148 for 6.The early burstThe short ball proved to be the worst option for bowlers from both sides as batsmen were able to comfortably ride the bounce and whack it either side of the wicket. No one benefitted more from that than Kamran Akmal, who scored 40 off 32 at the top of the order.Quetta’s bowlers, seemingly not learning from their mistakes, repeatedly dragged their length early on, and Kamran duly punished them, pulling with authority and piercing the off side with his cuts. Even after the opening burst had ended, Kamran was able to use the cut shot as an effective pressure-buster. Four of his boundaries came through the shot and helped set the tone for a good total, which eventually became a match-winning one after Sammy’s knock.Moment of the matchShahid Afridi’s finger injury denied fans a glimpse of the allrounder at the final but the packed Gaddafi Stadium was invested in a new hero. Sammy’s last-over heroics got the crowd into a frenzy and when the second of the two sixes vanished into the stands over long-on, the crowd broke into a chorus of “Sammy, Sammy!”Later, after Hasan Ali took out Zulfiqar Babar’s off stump to seal the game, Sammy called his boys for the selfie celebration as the crowd again erupted. Then, as if to show how much they had missed Afridi, every member of the team attempted the star-man pose. That Sammy had won over the fans was further validated when the Peshawar captain was greeted with loud cheers at the presentation ceremony. “To me, it’s just more than a game,” he said. “It first started in the draft. Lala [Afridi] made the big announcement that I would be the captain. This trophy means a lot. Lala influenced my decision to come here. I felt tonight I brought a lot of smiles in Lahore and Peshawar. It is an amazing day.”Peshawar is not just a cricket team, we do a lot for the fans, the foundation. Thanks to the PCB, and the PSL. I am glad I came to experience the atmosphere here.”

Folarin Balogun comes back to haunt Reims! USMNT star gets standing ovation from former team's fans after scoring as Monaco win to stay top of Ligue 1

USMNT striker Folarin Balogun scored on his return to Reims as Monaco stayed top of Ligue 1 with a comfortable 3-1 win.

Balogun got USMNT fans excited with his 21-goal league campaign with Reims last season, and it appears that he has hit the ground running at Monaco

The 22-year-old scored his third goal in five appearances for his new club since a €30 million (£26m/$32m) move from Arsenal, setting Monaco on their way to a 3-1 away win that keeps them top of the pile.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The opening stages of the match were certainly not for the purists; both sides could barely string more than a few passes together and instead exchanged petty fouls and misplaced passes.

It was starting to look like an extremely uneventful first half would end goalless, but Ismail Jakobs tore up that script when he side-footed home a few minutes before half-time.

If Balogun played a minor role in the opening goal – his presence in the middle of the penalty area forced the Reims defenders to leave Jakobs unmarked at the back post – he was the protagonist of the second.

Play had barely restarted when the 22-year-old found himself with grass to run into on the right of the box. Youssouf Fofana slipped Balogun in on goal and he kept his cool to rifle into the roof of the net, albeit via a slight deflection.

The youngster held his hands up in apology to his former fans, but moments later he was celebrating another goal. This time strike partner Wissam Ben Yedder applied the finishing touch, heading home Jakob's dangerous cross across goal.

Reims pulled one back from the penalty spot through Teddy Teuma, but it was Balogun and Monaco who emerged victorious in northeast France.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Balogun was a revelation in France last season, scoring 21 goals in 37 Ligue 1 appearances during a season-long loan at Reims from Arsenal. Finishing fourth in the scoring charts made clubs across Europe sit up and take notice, and it was Monaco who won the race to sign him.

There were some worries about whether Balogun would be able to replicate his scoring antics at a club with greater standards, expectations and pressure, but three goals in five appearances this term seem to have put those concerns to bed.

At Monaco, Balogun has already formed a partnership with veteran marksman Ben Yedder. The 33-year-old scored his 150th Ligue 1 goal on Saturday; there are probably worse strikers Balogun could learn from.

After suffering the embarrassment of missing two penalties in a 1-0 defeat to Nice a couple of weeks ago, Balogun has shown maturity and resilience in scoring in back-to-back outings.

    USMNT IMPACT

USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter will be pleased that the youngster has now started three consecutive games for his new club, and that his goal-scoring exploits at Reims last season clearly wasn't just a flash in the pan.

Balogun has started all four of the USMNT matches he has featured in since making his senior debut in June, suggesting that Berhalter sees him as his best striking option.

That the 22-year-old has found his shooting boots in Monaco is only a good thing for the national team.

    GOAL'S RATINGS

    Folarin Balogun (7/10):

Balogun was a constant thorn in Reims' side, using his pace to lead dangerous counter-attacks and his technical ability to link up with Ben Yedder and Aleksandr Golovin.

The Arsenal academy graduate took his goal well, and would have bagged a brace had he not lost the ball under his feet moments after Reims pulled a goal back.

He did lose nine duels – more than any other player on the pitch – so that's something to work on.

Leeds United Eyeing 40-Year-Old As New Manager

Leeds United reportedly see West Brom boss Carlos Corberan as a possible ideal option to be their next manager moving forward.

Has Corberan been linked with Leeds job?

The 40-year-old has done a hugely impressive job at the Hawthorns during his short spell there to date, having arrived when they were second-bottom of the Championship late last year.

West Brom ended up coming close to finishing in the playoff positions, however, and if Corberan had been in charge a little longer, chances are they would have achieved that goal.

Since Sam Allardyce's exit as Leeds manager was confirmed last week, numerous names have been linked with replacing him in the Elland Road hot seat. Steven Gerrard and Brendan Rodgers have emerged as high-profile options, but Corberan's name has also been thrown into the hat.

The Whites seemingly consider the Spaniard as a strong choice to come in, having seen the job he is doing with the Baggies, but it remains to be seen if he will eventually be the man to be handed the reins.

Is Corberan really a target?

According to Football Insider, Corberan is indeed "on the shortlist" at Leeds currently, and it is unlikely that they will look to bring in a "traditional figure" in the mould of Allardyce.

Interestingly, the West Brom boss is seen as "ideal" by those high up at the club, should they want to bring in a long-term appointment who can build something special over time.

Leeds are further boosted by a claim in the report that states that Corberan's future with the Baggies is also in doubt "amid a backdrop of financial issues at the club".

It is so important that the Whites get this decision spot on, avoiding the same ludicrous situation they have found themselves in this season, with Jesse Marsch, Javi Garcia and Allardyce all in charge at some point in the campaign.

Corberan may still be a young manager – one who isn't as proven or well-known as the likes of Gerrard and Rodgers – but the progress he has made at West Brom has been bordering on astonishing, and he has even reportedly been inspired by the style of former Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa.

The fact that Corberan has worked at Leeds in the past is also a bonus, having spent three years in charge of the Under-23s between 2017 and 2020, and he will have learned plenty from Bielsa in that time.

Lionel Messi's new club Inter Miami: Team-mates, trophies, tickets, stadium & everything you need to know ahead of blockbuster MLS move

Here's everything you need to know about Inter Miami after Lionel Messi confirmed he is joining the David Beckham-owned MLS club in July.

Regarded by many as the best player in history, Lionel Messi has revealed his intentions to join Inter Miami and compete in the Major League Soccer (MLS).

It will be South Beach, not Saudi Arabia, where Messi will showcase his talents for the rest of 2023, with the Argentine leaving life in Europe behind having achieved legendary status at Barcelona before his two-year spell at Paris Saint-Germain.

Inter Miami is one of the newer clubs to have appeared in MLS, with their first playing season having taken place just three years ago in 2020. There may be a lot of unknowns about the Herons for Messi and his legion of supporters across the globe, so we're here to help.

GOAL brings to you everything you need to know about Messi's next club!

What competitions do Inter Miami compete in?

Inter Miami currently participate inMajor League Soccer in the United States. The league serves as the top flight for a combination of teams from the United States and Canada. There are 29 teams participating in the league divided into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Inter Miami are part of the Eastern Conference as the club is situated in Florida on the eastern coast of the USA.

The 'Herons' also participate in the U.S Open Cup, which is the national cup competition for the clubs from MLS and the second tier, the USL Championship.

Miami, as of June 8, 2023, are still in the competition having booked their place in the semi-final of the cup after a win against USL Championship side, Birmingham Legion.

In July, Messi's new club will also participate in the third edition of the Leagues Cup, an annual tournament that brings together teams from MLS and Liga MX, the top professional soccer league in Mexico. This inter-league competition is scheduled to take place from July 21 to August 19, 2023 and could well be the setting for the Argentine's highly-anticipated Miami debut.

Messi’s new club could also potentially qualify for the CONCACAF Champions Cup next season, if they win the US Open Cup. The CONCACAF Champions Cup is the continental competition between clubs in the CONCACAF region and, in MLS, the MLS Cup winners and the respective leaders of the two conferences from the previous season receive a direct berth alongside the winner of the U.S. Open Cup.

Get to know Messi's new team-mates

Inter Miami's most well-known player before the signing of Messi was his compatriot, Gonzalo Higuain. However, at the end of the 2022 season, the former Juventus and Chelsea forward decided to call time on his illustrious career.

While there have been rumours in the air about David Beckham's club also looking to target some of Messi's former team-mates, including Jordi Alba, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Angel Di Maria, it remains to be seen who will actually join the Argentine on his Miami quest.

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner will, however, join forces with Josef Martinez, who holds the record as the most decorated single-season player in MLS history by winning the League MVP, All-Star Game MVP, Golden Boot, and MLS Cup Final MVP.

He will also join fellow Argentines Franco Negri and Nicolas Stefanelli, former Newcastle full-back DeAndre Yedlin and ex-Wolves man, Leonardo Campana.

Despite his father's departure as manager, Phil Neville's son Harvey Neville is also still on Miami's books.

What trophies have Inter Miami won?

Although Inter Miami was formed as a club in 2018, they only started playing in 2020 and have failed to win a trophy in their short life so far. However, in 2022, the Herons did make an appearance in the MLS Playoffs, albeit losing in the first round against a dominant New York City FC.

As for the U.S. Open Cup, the South Florida club only reached the quarter-final once, back in 2022. However, they are currently in the semi-final of the 2023 US Open Cup, which could represent their first proper chance of silverware, with Messi leading the charge.

    What kit do they wear?

Inter Miami's brand colours since their inception have been pink and black. The colour theory has been followed by their home and away kits, with the home jersey pink in color with black accents that pop out through the contrast. Their away offering, meanwhile, follows the opposite combination, with black being the major colour with classy pink accents.

It's not yet been confirmed what number Messi will be given upon his arrival in Miami, although with the No.10 shirt vacant, it would be a huge surprise to see him take anything other than the iconic number he's worn for much of his professional career.

Arsenal Now Leading Race For £60k-p/w "Absolute Monster"

Arsenal are now leading the race for West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice, having overtaken London rivals Chelsea, according to a recent report from Football Insider.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

The Gunners are in the market for a new central midfielder this summer, and they have reportedly held talks about signing Chelsea's Mason Mount, in what would be a shock deal, amid his stalling contract negotiations at Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal's interest in Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo is not dead, despite the fact he has signed a new contract at the Amex Stadium, while they are also said to be in "constant contact" with the representatives of Everton's Amadou Onana.

In a recent update from talkSPORT, it was detailed that Rice is "excited" by the prospect of a move to north London, and he is now growing more likely to get his wish this summer.

According to a report from Football Insider, the Gunners are now in pole position for the £60k-per-week England international, and they are becoming increasingly confident about being able to win the race for his signature in the summer.

Chelsea had been considered favourites, but their financial struggles mean that a deal may be difficult to orchestrate, while Newcastle United are also said to have halted their pursuit.

Both Newcastle and Chelsea are unwilling to match West Ham's valuation of the 24-year-old, meaning Arsenal have now leapfrogged their rivals, becoming strong favourites to win the race.

Should Arsenal sign Declan Rice?

One of the major perks of qualifying for the Champions League is being able to attract players of the West Ham captain's calibre, and the Gunners must seize the opportunity to bring him to the Emirates Stadium.

Lauded as an "absolute monster" by members of the media, the Englishman would be an upgrade on Mikel Arteta's current options defensively, having averaged more interceptions, clearances and blocks per 90 than Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey in the past year.

Declan Rice celebrates as West Ham United beat Fulham in the Premier League.

Not only that, but the central midfielder displayed his threat on the front foot in West Ham's 4-1 victory against Gent, scoring a "stunning" individual goal after initially acquiring possession in his own half.

Rice is exactly the type of signing that Arsenal need to cement themselves as consistent challengers near the top of the Premier League, and it is fantastic news they have moved to the front of the queue for his signature.

Brad Hogg signs with Melbourne Renegades

The BBL’s oldest player, spinner Brad Hogg, has joined the Melbourne Renegades for the 2016-17 season

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Jul-2016The BBL’s oldest player, spinner Brad Hogg, has joined the Melbourne Renegades for the 2016-17 season. Hogg, 45, has spent the past five seasons as something of a cult figure with the Perth Scorchers and is their all-time leading BBL wicket taker, and second on the wicket tally for all teams since the tournament began in 2011-12.However, Hogg has decided against remaining in his home state, much to the disappointment of Scorchers coach Justin Langer. “I have been a very fortunate man in every respect and had five great seasons with the Scorchers,” Hogg said on Monday. “It was simply time for me to move on.”I had been rejecting other BBL offers for years, but this year I realised the end is coming closer – hopefully it’s still a few years away yet – but I know this is the time to grab those opportunities and experience everything I possibly can. The competition between the two Melbourne teams is a fierce rivalry and I want to be a part of that intensity over the BBL season.”Melbourne is the sporting hub of the country so I see it as a great honour to play there. It’s also a great team, and the fever pitch of a two-team rivalry, within the competition will be brilliant. Coming from Perth, the only time we get a taste of that is in AFL with the Dockers and Eagles. It’s electrifying.”The Renegades and Stars games will offer an intense rivalry within the competition itself. It adds an element to the game that I haven’t experienced. The Renegades can win this league and I cannot wait to get out there and feel the roar of that competition.”Hogg played in successful back-to-back BBL campaigns with the Scorchers in 2013-14 and 2014-15, and became Australia’s oldest T20 international player at the age of 43. This year, at 45, he became the oldest man ever to play in the IPL.”It’s just amazing when you consider that Brad’s still fit, got the fire and more to the point in-demand around the world,” Renegades coach David Saker said. “I don’t think there are many recent summers where we haven’t stood there and applauded his BBL performances”His experience goes without saying. He’ll be great for the guys in the group to learn from and you can’t teach the energy and enthusiasm he brings to the club. He loves the battle on the field and we can’t wait to see his competitive side come out in red.”

Hodge concerned about Powerplay failures

Gujarat Lions coach Brad Hodge has admitted there were quite a few areas of concern after the team’s second defeat in a row at home

Arun Venugopal in Rajkot04-May-2016Gujarat Lions coach Brad Hodge has admitted there were “quite a few areas of concern” after the team’s second defeat in a row at home. According to Hodge, losing wickets in clumps in the Powerplay – they lost three wickets in eight balls and tottered at 24 for 3 after four overs – for the second successive match was a major factor behind Lions’ eight-wicket loss to Delhi Daredevils. They had similarly slipped to 39 for 4 inside seven overs against Kings XI Punjab.”If you are 3 for 20 [sic], losing three of your best batters upfront, you’re going to be in trouble. Same [as] what happened the last game,” Hodge said. “In the last game against Kings, Axar [Patel] took a hat-trick. Couple of balls didn’t even turn. We lost three wickets in an over. And again [today], three wickets in seven [sic] balls with three of our best batters. Wickets in Powerplay… something that we need to look at.”Hodge was also miffed with how no-balls have cost his side crucial wickets in the tournament. When Ravindra Jadeja overstepped to reprieve Sanju Samson, who was stumped in the 16th over, it was the second such let-off in three games. Steven Smith was similarly reprieved in Pune when left-arm wristspinner Shivil Kaushik bowled him off a no-ball for 41. Smith went on to score 60 more runs.”Unforgiveable, unforgivable,” Hodge said. “Who knows what could’ve happened if that was given out for Sanju. Next ball he gets a free hit, the ball goes for a boundary, game over. If you’re just going to let your guard down for a moment, you’re going to be found out. Hopefully, we can dust ourselves off and adjust with the differences and indifferences that we have and come again strongly. I would certainly hope that these last two games hurt very much.”Hodge backed his top order, strengthened further by Aaron Finch’s return from injury, to take the attack to the opposition, but said their shot-selection needed to be more prudent.”They are free spirited players. They are natural stroke-players and I don’t want to certainly take that away from them,” he said. “But we certainly just have to have a little watch at our shot selection and adapt to the conditions a little bit better. They are just little tweaks. I don’t want to rein in those guys when their strike rate is 170, certainly going to encourage that, but more so to adapt to conditions a little bit better.”Hodge was also critical of a pitch, which while a little slow, didn’t appear to be particularly difficult to bat on.”It was not ideal. I must say the surface exactly wasn’t what we were looking for. It is a little disappointing,” he said. “This is your home ground, you expect a little bit better. But having said that, you cannot use that as an excuse. The opportunity was there.”If we could’ve put 170-175 on the board, we could’ve won that game. Again, we were chasing only 155 the other day against Kings and we couldn’t get the job done. We can’t blame any of the surface or the practice. Our skill set was just not good enough on that day. We need to brush that off. We need to address it, step up and come again.”

Liverpool fans buzz over Josko Gvardiol links

Liverpool are one of the clubs that are showing an interest in the possibility of making a summer move for RB Leipzig and Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol.

This is according to Fabrizio Romano who has been speaking on his YouTube channel about the future of the young centre-back ahead of this summer’s transfer window:

He said: “From what I understand, Liverpool approached Leipzig in January to understand the conditions of the deal. And it was almost impossible to sign Gvardiol in January. But Liverpool have an interest in Josko Gvardiol he’s a player they appreciate.”

It is believed the Reds are not the only Premier League side who could make a move for the 21-year-old with Chelsea and Manchester City also credited with interest by the Italian journalist.

Gvardiol has already racked up 11 appearances in the Champions League in which he has found the back of the net against both Real Madrid and Manchester City.

And having played a big role in Croatia’s World Cup journey, the defender has clearly caught the attention of many around Europe.

The report was relayed on Twitter by fan account Anfield Edition and the best of the reactions can be found below…

The difference was in the batting

Tamil Nadu’s relatively inexperienced line-up was out-thought by Mumbai’s bowlers and out-batted by their batsmen

Kanishkaa Balachandran in Chennai17-Nov-2007

Tamil Nadu’s batsmen could have learnt from Abhishek Nayar’s counter-attacking 105 on Friday © Cricinfo Ltd
The result, an eight-wicket win, was predictable. Mumbai, the defending champions, were searching for their opening victory of the season; a young Tamil Nadu side was trying to establish an identity for themselves after an exodus of senior players. It wasn’t much of a contest: Mumbai spotted a weakness – the batting – within the first session and chipped away at that, inducing mistakes rather than walking away with gimmes. It was a good toss to win for captain S Badrinath but, as he and the coach, WV Raman, later admitted, the game was all but lost after the first hour. The first ball after the first drinks break saw a wicket fall and two more followed in quick succession. One of those was Badrinath, the team’s most consistent batsman and one on the fringes of national selection, who chopped one onto his stumps without opening his account.Despite chanceless half centuries from Dinesh Karthik and R Srinivasan, Tamil Nadu were shot out for 206 before stumps on day one. It’s easy to blame devils – real or otherwise – in the pitch and it was two-paced but, refreshingly, Badrinath and Raman didn’t go down that road. “We simply didn’t take advantage of the toss,” Raman told Cricinfo after the match. “It was the same pitch for both sides. Mumbai just made fewer mistakes.”What, then, caused Tamil Nadu to fold up for 206 and 214? One observation was that the batsmen at times failed to cover the line of the ball quickly enough, not knowing when the ball would suddenly shoot low. When sound technique was needed, Mumbai’s batsmen rose to the task on more occasions, covering the line and defending off the meat of the bat, the sound of leather hitting willow reverberating across the ground. Even defensive strokes were met with cheers and claps from the players’ tent, and it clearly wasn’t meant for fun.Of the 20 Tamil Nadu wickets that fell, seven were out bowled, and five of those were in the second innings, with the side under pressure to wipe out the deficit and build a substantial lead. Ajit Agarkar got one to sneak between bat and pad on the second ball of the third morning, and Aavishkar Salvi hit the timber in all his three dismissals in the second innings. Badrinath dragged one onto his stumps playing away from his body, R Srinivasan didn’t get his foot across to cover the inswing while K Vasudevadas paid the price for not knowing where his off stump was. Mumbai, by contrast, lost just two wickets in the same manner. The chief wrecker in both innings was Powar with match figures of 9 for 123 and it was clear the home team’s batsmen had problems tackling his slow and canny offspinners. Too rarely did the batsmen get adventurous and use their feet against him. Srinivasan survived a few nervy moments and close shouts for leg-before, attempting back-foot strokes. They could have followed the example of the young R Ashwin, whose willingness to get a good stride forward helped counter Powar’s spin. Abhishek Nayar’s aggressive 105 was the best example of how to counter-attack the conditions. His unusually wide stance helped him get to the pitch of the ball and cart it over the infield.Perhaps it’s hard to expect too much out of a young side, with a few pushed into the big league earlier than expected. Raman spoke of the happy dressing-room atmosphere and a few younger players, in turn, spoke about his positive influence. As Raman put it, with a young side, the only way, is up.

West Ham could have signed late £31.5m Cresswell replacement

West Ham United are currently top of the Premier League table following their victory at Kenilworth Road, so supporters won't be worried about a lack of new additions on Deadline Day.

However, the Hammers did miss out on a golden opportunity to add quality depth to their defensive presence this evening, with a new update emerging on a target who wanted a move to the London Stadium.

Who were West Ham interested in on Deadline Day?

According to The Evening Standard's Nizaar Kinsella, Chelsea full-back Ian Maatsen wanted to join West Ham, despite being touted for another loan move back to Burnley this afternoon.

As per the report, the west London club agreed an initial loan with an obligation worth £31.5m for Maatsen, but the youth prospect was reluctant to agree to the deal as he preferred a move to remain in London, and it is now looking like he will stay at Stamford Bridge.

How good is Ian Maatsen?

The Hammers are currently unbeaten in the Premier League which will be a huge relief to David Moyes after losing a number of key players this summer, however, a missed opportunity to sign Maatsen will surely haunt the manager as they step into their Europa League campaign.

Read the latest West Ham transfer news HERE…

The left-back – who is a product of the famous Cobham academy – was one of the most promising prospects in the Championship last season during his season-long loan at Turf Moor, where he made huge contributions to Burnley's successful promotion back to the top flight.

Over 39 Championship appearances, the 21-year-old – once hailed as "hugely talented" by Coventry City goalkeeper Simon Moore – scored four goals, registered six assists, created a whopping 11 big chances and tallied up an 83% pass completion rate, as per Sofascore.

Not only that, the Netherlands native ranked in the top 20% of his positional peers across the eight leagues most similar to the Championship for non-penalty goals, assists, progressive carries, progressive passes and interceptions per 90 minutes played, offering a glimpse at his diverse skill set and strengths.

In fact, Maatsen would have been a dream replacement for Aaron Cresswell as he outperformed the Hammers full-back in a number of key attributes last season, albeit at a poorer level.

Indeed, those metrics included goal contributions (10 v 1), pass completion rate (80.6% v 77.8%), goal-creating actions per 90 (0.30 v 0.04), percentage of dribblers tackled (52.5% v 38.7%) and successful take-ons (40.3% v 28.6%), as per FBref.

Cresswell is now 32 years old and his current contract with the east London club will expire at the end of this season, so it will definitely feel like a huge chance has been missed for the Hammers to not only sign a worthy and youthful successor, but a potential upgrade on the left-back.

With that being said, there is no doubt it will be disappointing for West Ham supporters that Maatsen couldn't complete a deal with the club this summer, however, should he stay at Chelsea it could still present an opportunity for the future if the youngster is open to a move in January.
