Craig Ervine, who had been sidelined by hamstring niggles since early August, has recovered to lead Zimbabwe at the T20 World Cup in Australia. He will take over the captaincy from Regis Chakabva, who had led Zimbabwe to their first victory against Australia in Australia in any format earlier this month.Blessing Muzarabani will head the bowling unit. He had played just the first ODI on the Australia tour as Zimbabwe took a cautious approach with the seamer returning from a thigh muscle tear. Muzarabani brings with him the experience of having played for Multan Sultans in the PSL and having been a net bowler for Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL.Tendai Chatara (collarbone fracture), Milton Shumba (quadricep injury) and Wellington Masakadza (shoulder injury) are also fit again and will lend depth to the bowling attack.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Meanwhile, Chakabva, Sikandar Raza and Sean Williams all pick themselves in a full-strength Zimbabwe side.Victor Nyauchi, Clive Madande, Innocent Kaia, Takudzwanashe Kaitano and Tadiwanashe Marumani, who were all part of Zimbabwe’s most recent white-ball assignment – an ODI tour of Australia – found no place in the main squad.Kaia, Marumani and Nyauchi, though, were among the reserve players, along with Kevin Kasuza and Tanaka Chivanga.Zimbabwe will face Ireland, West Indies and Scotland in the opening round of the T20 World Cup. They will tune up for those games by facing Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka and Namibia in warm-up matches on October 10 and October 13 respectively in Melbourne.Zimbabwe had made it to the T20 World Cup by going unbeaten in the qualifiers at home.

Spurs loanee who’s outscoring Son could be a bigger talent than Lankshear

da gbg bet: It’s been a season of extremes for Tottenham Hotspur this year.

da brwin: Ange Postecoglou’s side have looked utterly sensational in some games and have played some of the best attacking football in Europe, let alone England.

Yet, the North Londoners have still found ways to throw matches away, as they did against Galatasaray on Thursday night following Will Lankshear’s sending-off.

The youngster didn’t make the most of what was a golden opportunity, and he might not get as many next season as one of the club’s other young forwards is currently outscoring him and club captain Son Heung-min out on loan.

Lankshear and Son's seasons so far

It wasn’t the night young Lankshear would’ve hoped for on Thursday.

However, given his lack of top-flight experience and the intense atmosphere in the ground, his sending-off should not see him receive too much stick, especially as before his silly second foul, he was playing reasonably well.

The 19-year-old was the man who got the North Londoners back in the game in the first half, perfectly putting away Brennan Johnson’s pass on the half-volley to score his first senior goal for the club in just his second appearance.

In fact, before he was sent off, it would be fair to say he was playing better than his captain was, as Son never looked likely to provide an assist, let alone score a goal in Istanbul.

However, while he was ineffective on Thursday, the South Korean superstar has remained a relatively reliable attacking threat in his other appearances this season, as he’s scored three goals and provided three assists in his other nine appearances.

That said, even the former Bayer Leverkusen star is being outscored by one of the club’s promising loanees, who’s enjoying a great campaign in Spain.

Spurs' goalscoring loanee

So, there are several talented Spurs players out on loan this season, from Dane Scarlett to Alfie Devine, but in this instance, we are talking about the 21-year-old striker Alejo Veliz.

Alejo Veliz.

The Argentine prospect joined the North Londoners in a £13m deal from Rosario Central last summer after an impressive campaign that saw the youngster rack up a tally of 11 goals and one assist in 24 first-team appearances.

He spent half of last season in N17, scoring one goal in eight games, but the latter half on an unsuccessful short-term loan move to Sevilla, where he made six goalless appearances.

With his long-term future somewhat up in the air this summer, the Lilywhites sent him back to Spain on a season-long loan with Espanyol, and while he isn’t tearing it up in Catalonia, he’s doing far better.

In 11 appearances across all competitions, the promising “phenomenon”, as he was dubbed by Argentine legend and 1978 World Cup-winner Daniel Bertoni, has scored four goals, meaning that, at the moment, he has more to his name than both Son and Lankshear.

Ultimately, it is far too early to say with any certainty that Veliz will become Spurs’ next great goalscorer, but based on his limited minutes this season and the way those in the know speak about him, there is every chance he could be.

Will Sutherland's maiden first-class hundred leads Victoria's recovery

Marcus Harris also played a vital innings after South Australia had made early inroads

AAP06-Oct-2022Allrounder Will Sutherland posted his maiden Sheffield Shield century to keep Victoria in the contest against South Australia at Karen Rolton Oval. They were in all sorts of trouble at 4 for 54 and 6 for 137 before Sutherland came to the rescue with the finest knock of his young career. The 22-year-old struck 100 off 168 balls, including nine fours and three sixes, to lift Victoria to 9 for 264 at stumps on day one.His heroics were all the more surprising given he entered the match with a first-class average of just 14.33 from 21 matches and with a top score of 34 not out.Sutherland was also left shaken by a big hit to the helmet when he was yet to score. He was given the all clear to continue after an on-field medical assessment, and he gained in confidence the longer his innings went.Related

  • Positive signs for Victoria after last season's final appearance

  • Paine falls cheaply on first-class return as Queensland take charge

South Australia’s tactic of bowling short to him soon came unstuck as Sutherland began to unleash a series of lusty blows.Sutherland’s knock came on the same day that his sister, Annabel Sutherland, posted 68 off 76 balls in Victoria’s WNCL win over Tasmania. She posted a century two days earlier in what has proven to be a magical week for the talented family.”It’s what Alex Carey was saying out in the middle – saying the Sutherlands are in good form,” Sutherland said. “I’ve got a long way to go to catch up with her and the way she’s batting. But it’s good to be in the runs. I do work very hard on my batting, so it’s good to see some reward.”Although Will Sutherland was able to cash in, Will Pucovski missed out completely. He survived a strong lbw shout from Harry Conway on the first ball of the innings. Three balls later he was out when he edged behind. It was one of five catches for wicketkeeper Alex Carey across the day.Peter Handscomb, Nic Maddinson and Matt Short all fell cheaply before lunch, while Sam Harper was dismissed after the break to leave Victoria reeling at 5 for 92.The damage would have been far worse if it wasn’t for Marcus Harris, who kept his calm amid the carnage to post a finely-crafted 85 off 170 balls. Once he departed, Sutherland took over in dominant fashion to further drag Victoria to safety. His innings was eventually ended by a mesmerising Jordan Buckingham delivery that dramatically swung back in to clip the off stump bail.Buckingham finished the day with figures of 3 for 52, while David Grant and Wes Agar also enjoyed success.Pucovski scored an unbeaten 193 for a Victorian second XI last month in his return from his latest concussion. Although he was dismissed cheaply on Thursday in his first Shield hit-out of the season, he will get another chance to shine in Victoria’s second innings.

Nottinghamshire take firm grip after Lyndon James 155

Middlesex reach close four down in face of home side’s 551 for 8 declared

ECB Reporters Network27-Jun-2022Division Two leaders Nottinghamshire tightened their grip against Middlesex in the LV= Insurance County Championship, posting their highest total at Trent Bridge for seven years after Lyndon James had turned his overnight 90 into a career-best 152.The 23-year-old allrounder completed his first century on home soil and went well past his previous best of 108 before miscuing a ball from Middlesex’s young legspinner Luke Hollman to be caught at backward point as Nottinghamshire racked up 551 before declaring at eight down. After a rocky start saw them slip to 37 for 3 inside ten overs, Mark Stoneman and Max Holden looked to have built a platform for a Middlesex fightback by adding 69 in 24 overs but Stoneman fell for 67 just before close to leave the visitors 106 for 4, still 445 runs behind.Hollman finished with 4 for 122 as the most successful Middlesex bowler, although only Toby Roland-Jones was able to find any measure of control. The pace of the cricket made up for the loss of the first session to rain as Nottinghamshire resumed on 378 for 4. The home side suffered a setback in the first over of the day as captain Steven Mullaney, having been struck in the groin by Tim Murtagh, recovered only to misjudge a ball angled in by Murtagh that bowled him with no stroke offered.James, a tall, elegant right-hander who has come through the Nottinghamshire age groups, moved into three figures with a beautifully-executed off drive and new partner Tom Moores looked equally pleasing on the eye with four boundaries in a couple of overs as Nottinghamshire completed the full set of batting bonus points.Moores came and went quickly in the event, wafting at one outside off stump to give Murtagh a second wicket in his opening spell, but Middlesex would have to wait 20 overs for another breakthrough during which James and Liam Patterson-White added 91 before the former – dropped at second slip on 78 on the first evening – went down the pitch to Hollman and paid the price for an uncontrolled stroke.James, who had gone to 150 with a lovely paddle for four followed by a pull for six off Hollman, finished with 19 fours and a six, with Middlesex’s change seamers Toby Helm and Martin Andersson again leaking more boundaries than they would have liked.Patterson-White and Pattinson added another 53 in eight overs, the Australian quick bowler twice clearing the rope off Hollman, the second of which took Nottinghamshire’s total top side of 550 for the first time on this ground since they scored 600 against Warwickshire in 2015.A four crashed through the off side as he made room to swing at Helm had taken Patterson-White to his first half-century of the season but when he holed out to long-off in the next over, Mullaney decided he had enough. With 36 overs left in the day, the simple objective for Middlesex was to reach the close with minimal losses but a hostile three-pronged Nottinghamshire pace attack had other ideas. Sam Robson was given out leg before as Pattinson thudded one into his front pad, Steven Eskinazi was bowled off an inside edge by Luke Fletcher and 22-year-old left-hander Jack Davies, in his second first-class outing of the season, was leg before to Dane Paterson without scoring.Stoneman’s 78-ball half-century looked to have given Middlesex a platform to take into day three but he succumbed to the pressure of fielders round the bat three overs from the close, aiming a fulsome drive at a ball from left arm spinner Patterson-White that spun back to bowl him.

Arsenal must finally sell £45m flop who Arteta was "very excited" to sign

da bwin: After two years of seriously impressive performances, there was a general expectation that Arsenal would be just as good, if not better, this year.

da casino: Unfortunately for Mikel Arteta and Co, that has simply not been the case, as a concoction of injuries, foolish suspensions, and subpar displays has seen the team fall to fourth in the Premier League, nine points off leaders Liverpool.

Now, it’s not been all bad, as there have been some impressive results, and a handful of players are doing their best to turn things around, but overall, it’s been a disappointing start to the campaign for the North Londoners.

Moreover, it’s been particularly worrying for one of the Gunners’ best-paid attackers, who’s gone from a guaranteed starter to someone who has to be sold.

Arsenal's middling attack

Okay, so before we get to the player in question, let’s examine Arsenal’s most dangerous players this season, starting with one who can keep his head held high: Bukayo Saka.

The Hale End icon hasn’t necessarily been at his very best this year, but even then, he’s scored four goals and provided seven assists in 15 appearances, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 1.36 games, and, unsurprisingly, has been the club’s most effective attacker.

Just behind him is last summer’s £65m man, Kai Havertz, who has also not been at his very best this season but has nonetheless looked better than most of his teammates, as in his 17 appearances, he’s found the back of the net on seven occasions and provided one assist for good measure.

The final attacker, who it could be argued is starting to have a good season so far, is Gabriel Martinelli, who, after a slow start to the campaign, now has a semi-respectable haul of three goals and three assists to his name in 17 appearances.

Unfortunately for Arteta, the only other players in the squad to have amassed three goal involvements this season are Leandro Trossard, Ethan Nwaneri and Declan Rice, which, for a team aiming to win the Premier League or Champions League, is more than a little worrying.

Moreover, the eagle-eyed of you will notice a certain forward is entirely absent from the Gunners’ most dangerous players this year, a forward who should finally be moved on in 2025.

The Arsenal star who must be sold

So, it’s probably quite apparent by this point that the forward in question is, of course, Gabriel Jesus.

Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus

Arsenal spent £45m to secure his services from Manchester City in the summer of 2022, and at the time, it wasn’t the fans who were delighted with the deal, as Arteta told the press that he was “very excited” about the Brazilian’s arrival, and based on how he started that season it was easy to understand why.

For example, in the 16 Premier League games before the Qatar World Cup, the Sao Paulo-born dynamo scored five goals and provided five assists, meaning he was averaging a goal involvement every 1.6 games in the league.

Unfortunately, he suffered a severe knee injury at the World Cup and was out of action until mid-March, and while he still managed to score six goals and provide one assist in his final 12 league games that season, he looked notably slower and understandably less sharp.

There was a general hope among the fanbase that, with a summer to rest, he’d be back to his electric self the following season, but that wasn’t the case.

By February, he had lost his place in the team to Havertz, and due to the German’s incredible form towards the backend of the campaign, he’s not regained it this year.

Moreover, while the 27-year-old was still able to produce 16 goal involvements in his 36 appearances last season, he’s taken another massive step back this year and, as things stand, has scored just one goal and provided one assist in 15 appearances.

It’s a sad situation, and for another side, he might be given another chance to earn his place in the team again, but as Arsenal continue to fight for significant honours, they cannot afford any passengers.

This is especially true in Jesus’ case, as he’s currently the second-highest earner in the squad, on a whopping £265k-per-week, which is becoming increasingly difficult to justify with every dismal display. Therefore, while it could be construed as harsh by some, Arteta and the club must cut their losses and sell the former City star as soon as possible.

The best 10 goalkeepers in football right now (ranked)

The term ‘shot-stopper’ almost becomes more null and void with every passing year, for a goalkeeper is far more than that these days. They are the beginning of every manager’s system, the first pass to break a press, they get their side up the pitch, they sweep their area.

What began with Manuel Neuer has progressed into what is the expectancy of every modern-day ‘shot-stopper’. And that has seen a fresh batch of stars emerge to create history and spark the endless debate as to who takes the crown as the world’s best. Using stats such as saves per 90, save percentage, clean sheets and pass accuracy, we’ve determined our number one.

An underrated name on this list, Diogo Costa has become more reliable than most at Porto and represents a true modern-day No 1. Rising through the ranks at the Portuguese club, Costa has more than earned his place and has even been linked with moves to the likes of Chelsea along the way.

For now, however, his main goal remains taking his boyhood club back to the top of Liga Portugal ahead of Sporting CP.

Ranked eighth in the 2024 Yashin Trophy, Costa has been forced to settle for a place in 10th in our rankings, but should hold no shame in that given the plethora of names still to come.

Ranked one place ahead of Costa in the Yashin Trophy standings, Giorgi Mamardashvili has emerged as one of the hottest prospects around between the sticks. The Valencia goalkeeper has starred even as the rest of his side continue to struggle at the bottom of La Liga and particularly stood at at Euro 2024 with Georgia.

Attracting the interest of Liverpool as a result, Mamardashvili sealed a move worth a reported £29m to Anfield in the summer before heading back out on loan to Valencia for the current campaign.

On course to become the heir to Alisson Becker’s throne, 6ft 6in Mamardashvili is one of the best shot-stoppers around, who will have a higher place on such a list once he improves with the ball at his feet at a side of Liverpool’s quality.

8 Emiliano Martinez Aston Villa & Argentina

Whilst some, including FIFA, may have Emiliano Martinez top on the list of the world’s best goalkeepers, he’ll have to settle for a lower place in our rankings.

The Argentinian’s place in the history books should never come into question. He proved to be one of the biggest difference-makers between glory and the ultimate heartbreak on the biggest stage for Lionel Messi when Argentina defeated France in the 2022 World Cup final.

Ask any of his international teammates – and perhaps the entirety of his home country – and Martinez may well be considered among the best in history, but outside of those international heroics, it would be harsh on others to consider the Aston Villa man far and away the best that European football has to offer, especially when considering the numbers.

Speaking of international heroics, Unai Simon more than played his part as Spain battled to victory at Euro 2024 in Berlin, eventually overcoming England in dramatic fashion late on.

Finishing second in the Yashin Trophy as a result, the Athletic Bilbao man kept a total of three clean sheets at the tournament – only second to France’s Mike Maignan.

Now battling for a place in Europe with Athletic Bilbao alongside fellow Spain star Nico Williams, Simon should be on the radar of several top clubs when the January transfer window arrives next summer.

He proved that he can perform on the biggest stage last summer and is only likely to prove it once again with a big move.

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak

Jan Oblak may not be at the peak of his powers as consistently now that he’s 31 years old, but he remains one of the world’s best and Diego Simeone’s undisputed No 1. When he decides to hang his gloves up, La Liga will be left with a sensational highlight reel of incredible saves. At his best, the Slovenian has been almost impenetrable at times in Madrid.

With a few years to go yet, there’s no doubt that Oblak will continue to produce the impossible when Atletico Madrid and Simeone need him most, having already kept seven clean sheets in La Liga by mid-November.

5 David Raya Arsenal & Spain

Ahead of his Spanish counterpart Simon for once, David Raya’s recent rise has helped to form one of the Premier League’s most impressive backlines at Arsenal.

Behind William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, last season’s Golden Glove winner remains a crucial figure on and off the ball as a classic example of the modern goalkeeper that Mikel Arteta wanted ahead of Aaron Ramsdale.

Of course, it remains a mystery as to why Simon is often preferred to Raya on international duty, but credit deserves to go to both shot-stoppers for creating such competition.

At 29 years old, however, Raya should be desperate to move Simon aside in a similar fashion to how he dislodged Ramsdale at Arsenal in order to become the undisputed No 1 for Spain ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Into the top four, this ranking could quite easily be Manchester City’s penalty order, which in many ways sums up just how unique Ederson is. The pure definition of a modern goalkeeper, the Citizens’ No 1 has the flair of a Brazilian forward and the passing range of an NFL quarterback, all whilst maintaining his shot-stopping standards.

The most composed player on the pitch even as several hearts skip a beat, Ederson is undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers to ever step foot in the Premier League and arguably the best in Manchester City’s history with countless honours to his name.

Spearheading Milan’s return to the top of Italian football in the 2021/22 campaign before becoming France’s No 1 and winning the Golden Glove at Euro 2024, Maignan’s place among the world’s best goalkeepers is no longer a debate. In fact, it could even be argued that he should be higher on the list. For now, however, the Frenchman sits third here – and respectably behind some elite shot-stoppers.

He simply ticks every box for a modern goalkeeper and has shown that on the biggest stage. There’s not many sides in Europe’s top five leagues who wouldn’t take the 29-year-old as their No 1, including those at the very top.

From his Atletico Madrid days to winning the Premier League at Chelsea and now starring at Real Madrid, Thibaut Courtois has been around for the last decade and has probably never dipped outside the top 10 goalkeepers in world football. He’s simply been that consistent and that much of a standout.

On the big stage, he’s among the players that most clubs would pick between the sticks on the shot-stopping front. It’s no surprise that even Real Madrid, with all the stars that they have, are struggling in the Belgian’s recent absence as of late.

What summed up his quality more than ever last season, however, was how he slotted straight into the Champions League final on his return from a long-term injury and didn’t miss a beat.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Whilst Real Madrid were quick to suggest that Rodri’s Ballon d’Or win over Vinicius Junior was the most controversial moment of the ceremony, Alisson has quite the case for himself after failing to even make the rankings for the Yashin Trophy.

Top of our rankings nonetheless (in what is of course the ultimate consolation), the Liverpool star has arguably been the world’s best goalkeeper for a number of years.

One of the all-time Premier League greats, what makes Alisson stand out is how he simply does not perform for the cameras. The Brazilian excels at making even the most ferocious strikes seem routine, and perhaps those who decide the Yashin Trophy were simply looking for picture-perfect rather than efficient.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will ignore any such award and settle for a goalkeeper who has been at the centre of some of their most historic moments in recent memory.

Rob Yates, Dom Sibley help Warwickshire keep the dream alive

Hosts retain sliver of hope of avoiding relegation on back of solid opening stand against Hampshire

ECB Reporters Network26-Sep-2022Warwickshire retained their sliver of hope of avoiding relegation from LV=Insurance County Championship Division One with a solid start with the bat on the opening day against Hampshire at Edgbaston.First team coach Mark Robinson admitted before the match that Warwickshire need “a lot to go our way” for them to stay up. First and foremost they have to win with plentiful batting points and they laid a decent platform by reaching 138 for 2 on a day stripped of 55 overs by rain and bad light. After the first session was lost to the weather, openers Rob Yates (77 not out, 129 balls) and Dom Sibley (54, 109) added 129 in 38 overs against a Hampshire attack missing spearhead Kyle Abbot (58 Championship wickets at 19.68 this season) due to a knee injury. The visitors chose to bowl but enjoyed no early success, despite some help from the pitch. Their bowling was not bad, and a shade unlucky at times, but perhaps lacked a bit of sparkle, an understandable legacy of the shock implosion of their title challenge against Kent last week. There was no joy for Keith Barker against the team for whom he took 359 first class wickets and helped to the 2012 County Championship title. Yates was particularly fluent from the off and reached 50 from 90 balls with his tenth four, flicked through mid-wicket off Barker. The scoring rate remained reasonably brisk, as was required with Warwickshire needing every possible batting point. Sibley, on his farewell appearance at Edgbaston before rejoining Surrey, followed to his half-century from 105 balls and the pair posted Warwickshire’s first century opening stand since the first game of the season. The breakthrough finally arrived when Sibley tickled a leg-side catch to wicketkeeper Aneurin Donald off Ian Holland. Holland immediately struck again when Alex Davies offered no shot to a ball which struck off stump but Sam Hain met the hat-trick ball with the middle of a forward defensive bat and bad light soon closed back in to lop off the last 14 overs.Warwickshire are without India all-rounder Jayant Yadav, who has returned home after being called up for the Rest of India squad, but have welcomed back fast bowler Liam Norwell from injury.

Liverpool want to ruin Amorim’s Man Utd plan by signing "talented" £84m gem

As the Arne Slot machine keeps hitting the jackpot, Liverpool are now reportedly plotting to get an early victory over new Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim by signing one Sporting CP gem ahead of interest from their rivals.

Liverpool transfer news

If there was a definition for seamless transition then 14 wins in 16 games would be among them. Slot has entered Anfield and simply picked up where Jurgen Klopp left off whilst implementing his own calmer, more controlled approach than the exciting, positively frantic style of the German. And things were no different against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League, as Luis Diaz’s hat-trick sent Xabi Alonso packing.

Back on top in the Premier League and in European football, Michael Edwards will now want to get Liverpool back to the top in the transfer market following a quiet window last time out.

The Reds have already been linked with the likes of Aurelien Tchouameni, but now reportedly want to spoil one of Amorim’s first plans at Manchester United.

According to TeamTalk, Liverpool now want to sign Geovany Quenda from Sporting Club, who will only let their 17-year-old winger leave if his hefty €100m (£84m) release clause is triggered.

Those at Anfield sit alongside Manchester City and Manchester United with their interest and the latter may well have the advantage on paper given Amorim’s Sporting links. That said, it would then be quite the way to deal an early blow to the new Red Devils boss by instantly luring one of his former players away from his grasp.

90% passing, 100% dribbles: 8/10 Liverpool star was just as good as Diaz

Quenda – still a teenager – is considered one of Sporting’s hottest prospects and is undoubtedly one to keep an eye on.

"Talented" Quenda is one for the future

Whilst it remains uncertain whether Mohamed Salah will put pen to paper on a new Liverpool deal, what is a known fact is that the Egyptian doesn’t have several years left at the top now that he’s 32 years old. In an ideal world, the Liverpool great will sign a new contract just as the Reds welcome the heir to his throne in the form of Quenda – a player who would instantly learn from Salah.

The young right-winger has been at the centre of significant praise so far this season, including from Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig, who described him as “one of the most talented wingers in world football” this week.

Replacing Salah will be no easy task, whenever that may be, but getting one over on Manchester United and Amorim whilst doing exactly that would be quite the move from those at Anfield.
