Gurinder Sandhu held his nerve as Sydney Thunder produced a frantic one-wicket victory over Melbourne Stars on the last ball in a low-scoring thriller to launch the BBL season. Chasing a modest 123, Thunder’s chase imploded due to reckless batting, and they appeared down and out several times against a pumped-up Stars attack on a tricky Manuka Oval surface. But they clawed back through the late heroics of Sandhu, who hit a six when Thunder needed seven off the last three balls. They achieved the tense victory off the final delivery through a bye in a major relief for Thunder.Stars were left heartbroken, especially new captain Adam Zampa, who had claimed his 100th BBL wicket as he appeared on course to celebrate his first match in charge in style until the dramatic late turn of events.Related

Zampa, Stoinis, Boult key for Stars in Maxwell's absence
Amazing last over kick-starts new season There is a lot riding on this new BBL season after a couple of tough Covid-19 affected years. But tournament organisers couldn’t have scripted a better opening first night, with this nerve-jangling match capped by an incredible last over.Needing eight runs for victory, Stars appeared in the box seat after substitute fielder Brody Couch took a spectacular high-flying catch at long-off in what might just be the catch of the summer across formats. It was the second gem from Couch, who had earlier juggled a catch low to the ground, reviving memories of Mark Taylor’s classic snare against West Indies at the SCG.But the twists kept coming, with a calm Sandhu nailing a six before it came down to the last ball delivered by Beau Webster, who beat the batter only for wicketkeeper Joe Clarke to completely miss the ball after he had taken his glove off in anticipation of a run-out.Trent Boult struck twice in his first over•CA/Cricket Australia/Getty Images
Boult makes immediate impact Stars’ pace attack had been pinpointed as their weak point during a couple of indifferent seasons, and Trent Boult’s signing – albeit for half a season – was hoped to make a major difference. He started the fightback in Thunder’s opening over with consecutive wickets of Matthew Gilkes and Rilee Rossouw. Boult was supported by paceman Nathan Coulter-Nile, who snared three wickets, and looked fit and firing after a strong pre-season.The injury-prone Coulter-Nile had only played 13 BBL games over the past two seasons, but if he can stay fit, Stars’ chances of ending their title drought improve immensely.Stars rue Burns continuing after hamstring injury Heading into the match, there was uncertainty over the availability of Stars’ batters Joe Burns and Marcus Stoinis after they contracted Covid-19. Both felt well enough to play, although they travelled to the ground separately from their team-mates and sat in a different dressing room.Burns came to the crease after the early wicket of Clarke, but in the sixth over, suffered a hamstring injury while running between the wickets. Even though clearly hampered and looking disconsolate, a hobbling Burns decided to stay at the crease, and tried to stand and deliver. But it didn’t work, with Burns struggling to connect. He laboured between the wickets with anything other than singles out of the question. After three fruitless overs, Burns finally decided to retire hurt, with Stars desperately needing to lift the tempo through incoming batter Stoinis. But Stoinis, held back from his customary opener’s role, fell first ball, and Stars never recovered.Burns is expected to miss a month, according to coach David Hussey, while Stoinis was unable to take the field in Thunder’s innings after feeling unwell.Farooqi’s fast and furious debut In a bid for a much-needed spark, Stars took the two-over Power Surge – an innovation the tournament has stuck with this season – in the 13th over. But Thunder countered by bringing back left-arm paceman Fazalhaq Farooqi, who was up to the challenge by bowling Hilton Cartwright around the wicket, and then dismissing top-scorer Nick Larkin two balls later. The double strike highlighted an impressive BBL debut for Farooqi, who bowled consistently around 140kph, laced with several menacing full-pitched deliveries. After eye-catching performances for Afghanistan at the recent T20 World Cup, Farooqi joined Thunder as a replacement for David Willey, who withdrew from the tournament. It looms as an inspired selection after Farooqi finished with 2 for 20 from four overs.
Nottingham Forest are interested in signing a £25 million international defender ahead of Premier League rivals Newcastle United, according to a recent report.
It has been an excellent 2024/25 season for the Reds so far, as they are probably the surprise package of the campaign, but with January not that far away now, Nuno Espirito Santo and co seemingly have their eye on potential transfer targets.

Nottingham Forest transfer news
Forest will hope that when January arrives, they are still in the top half of the table and are mounting a challenge for what could be an unexpected European spot. Nuno will not want to disrupt the squad too much, but adding one or two players may be on his mind.
The Reds are reportedly interested in signing Marwan Al-Sahafi from Al-Ittihad. He joined Belgian side Beerschot on loan in the summer and has been catching the eye with his performances, so much so that Forest and La Liga side Real Sociedad are keeping a close eye on him. As well as Al-Sahafi, it has recently emerged that Forest are interested in signing Manchester City’s James McAtee.
There are a host of clubs from England and abroad keeping an eye on his situation at the Etihad, but given his lack of game time, he could be allowed to leave in January for a fee of roughly £20 million. This has got Nuno’s side interested, but as well as looking at improving the team going forward, the Forest boss also has his eye on adding more options to his defence.
Nottingham Forest eyeing move to sign £25m Joel Ordonez
According to TBR Football, Nottingham Forest are eyeing a move to sign Joel Ordonez from Club Brugge in January. The Ecuador international, who has four caps to his name, has been playing in Belgium since 2022 but only joined Brugge last year and is also wanted by Newcastle.
The Belgian side were patient with the 20-year-old last season, but in this current 2024/25 campaign, he has become a key player, starting 13 of the 14 games he has played in all competitions. Ordonez has performed very well in Europe as well, starting all four of Brugge’s Champions League fixtures, two of which they have won, and one was against Aston Villa.
Villa have also been mentioned with an interest in Ordonez, but this new report adds that Forest are also interested in signing the centre-back. The Reds, Newcastle and Villa are not the only teams keen, with Brentford, Wolves and Brighton also named in the update.
Forest could be interested in making a move in January, but it would be an expensive capture, as it’s been claimed that Brugge values Ordonez at €30 million, which is roughly £25 million. This would be a risky signing for Nuno’s side, given he hasn’t played in England and the Premier League before, but at his age, he has a lot of time to develop into a very good central defender.

Fiorentina midfielder Edoardo Bove, on loan from Roma, collapsed on the pitch just 15 minutes into his team's Serie A clash against Inter Milan in December. Players were visibly shaken by the incident in early December, leading to the match being postponed. Bove was quickly rushed to the hospital by ambulance and placed under sedation in the intensive care unit. The Fiorentina player has since undergone heart surgery to have a defibrillator implanted and was discharged after spending two weeks in the hospital.

Bove returned to the training ground to see his team-mates just a couple of weeks following his heart surgery. Indeed, the 22-year-old was given a hero's welcome.
The Italian also took to Instagram to express his thoughts on the incident, stating that he was "truly grateful to belong to this world", thanking everyone "from the bottom of my heart for the affection and closeness" they showed during his treatment.
Now, Bove's Fiorentina team-mate Robin Gosens has opened up on the incident, describing how he felt the moment he saw Bove collapse on the field.
WHAT ROBIN GOSENS SAID
"I felt like I was actually looking into the eyes of a dead person. There was little life in them," said Gosens on his own podcast '(h/t BILD). "It was probably the worst thing I’ve ever seen."
GettyWHAT NEXT FOR EDOARDO BOVE?
Although Bove played 17 minutes off the bench in Fiorentina's 3-0 win at home over Inter in February, he hasn't featured since, as rules in Italy forbid a player fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) from playing.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Seven-time Super Bowl winner Brady is now involved with Birmingham, which has allowed him to lock horns with Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2024-25 – with the Blues competing alongside Wrexham in League One.
WHAT JJ WATT SAID
Birmingham have spent big in a bid to bounce back into the second tier of English football, while Burnley are looking to book an immediate return to the Premier League. With both teams aiming high, Watt has told of wanting to avoid another meeting with former gridiron rival Brady: "He’s got Birmingham, he’s got the [Las Vegas] Raiders, he’s got a lot going on. Looks like he’s on his way up to the Championship. I hope to not see him next year!"

DID YOU KNOW?
Watt has already experienced the highs and lows of promotion and relegation with Burnley and has explained how it is that rollercoaster of emotions that first drew him to English football. He added: "I love the people. I love the passion. I love what it means. I think that’s the whole reason I got into it in the first place. That’s what makes me so drawn to it."
On Tuesday night at Lesser Hampden, two days after going head-to-head in the League Cup Final next door, fierce rivals Celtic and Rangers met in the Glasgow Cup Final.
The competition, first contested in 1887, has been a youth tournament since the ’90s, with the city’s big two capturing the trophy every time since Partick Thistle’s triumph all the way back in 1989.
This time, it was Rangers who prevailed 3-2, extending their record with this the 59th time the Glasgow Cup will head to Ibrox.
More than the result, Gers supporters are becoming excited about one of the stars from this victorious side, so could he break into the first team in the near-future?
Rangers' next teen sensation
Born in London, Zak Lovelace began his youth career at Millwall, before joining Rangers’ academy in July 2022.
In The Pipeline
Football FanCast's In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.
Upon his arrival, now-former Sporting Director Ross Wilson described Lovelace as “an exciting young player”.
However, he didn’t exactly make the best first impression to the wider fanbase, sent off for simulation during the 2023 Scottish Youth Cup at Hampden, live on the BBC, a match his side would go on to lose 6-5 to Celtic.
This time however, Lovelace was the hero, scoring a very late winner in Tuesday’s Glasgow Cup Final.
Rangers manager Philippe Clement was in attendance at the City Stadium, with Lovelace one of the players the Belgian was reportedly keeping a close eye on.
The 18-year-old has already featured for the Light Blues’ first team under Clement.
Last year, he came off the bench during Michael Beale’s final game in charge, a miserable 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Aberdeen, before starting a 3-0 victory at St Mirren during Steven Davis’ very brief stint as interim boss.
Rangers forward Zak Lovelace.
This season, Lovelace has made his European debut, introduced as a substitute for the final quarter of an hour of the 4-0 Europa League drubbing of Steaua București, although this is the only time he’s appeared for the first team during the campaign thus far.
So, could he start to feature more regularly in the near future?
Where Zak Lovelace could fit into Rangers' team
Writer Kai Watson compared Lovelace’s winner in the Glasgow Cup Final to Daizen Maeda’s goal in the League Cup Final and, given how much the Japanese winger has tormented Rangers in recent seasons, Gers supporters would be delighted if their teen sensation turns out to be even half as good.
Indeed, Maeda – who arrived in Glasgow back in January 2022 – has scored four goals and provided four assists in his 17 Old Firm appearances to date, utilising his lightning speed to terrorise the Gers’ backline.
Perhaps, Lovelace can utilise his similar attributes to return the favour – as he did with his Maeda-esque finish in midweek – having previously been lauded as a “very exciting and quick forward player” by former Head of Academy, Craig Mulholland.
With the aim now for the teenage diamond to force his way into Clement’s plans on a regular basis, here’s a look at how the Light Blues’ current wingers have been performing this season and why Lovelace could start to feature prominently soon.

As outlined, Václav Černý aside, none of Rangers’ wide-attackers are offering much end-product so far this season, with the Czech international, alongside strikers Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane, the only squad members to have scored more than five goals across all competitions.
Malik Tillman
Thus, Lovelace could be thrown in, something Rangers have proven themselves not to be afraid of in the past, making Ross McCausland a key figure last season and, while the Northern Irishman’s role has somewhat diminished this time round, he did score a crucial goal off the bench during the Europa League victory in Malmö in September.
Over the festive period and beyond, games come thick and fast for the Light Blues, with 13 fixtures to be played during a 43-day period between this Saturday and 2 February.
In mid-January, just four days before visiting Old Trafford, Rangers host Highland League outfit Fraserburgh, so surely Lovelace is in line for a start when fifth-tier opposition visit Ibrox, if not sooner?
If Clement does turn to his young starlet, he could well have his very own Maeda to call upon moving forward.

Left-arm spinner Aditya Sarwate picked up 6 for 17 to help Vidarbha bowl out Gujarat for 54 and defend 73 on a dramatic third morning of their Ranji Trophy game in Jamtha. It was the lowest target defended successfully in first-class cricket in India; the previous lowest was 78, defended by Bihar against Delhi in Jamshedpur in 1948-49.Jamtha is also the venue for the first India-Australia Test, starting February 9. That game, though, will be played on one of the centre pitches, while this match was played on a side pitch. On Wednesday, Siddharth Desai, another left-arm spinner, had taken 6 for 74 to limit Vidarbha to 254. At that time, a Gujarat win looked like a mere formality, even though they went to stumps at 6 for 1.Sarwate, however, had other ideas. Having taken a five-for in the first innings, he ran through Gujarat’s line-up once again on Thursday. He was supported by Harsh Dubey, also a left-arm spinner, who took 3 for 11. Siddharth, run out for 18, was the only Gujarat batter to reach the double digits.Sarwate was named Player of the Match for his career-best haul of 11 for 81.Vidarbha are now third in Group D. Vidarbha’s final game of the round is against second-placed Punjab, which could decide who make it to the knockouts.

Lorcan Tucker celebrates his ton with Andy McBrine•BCB
Lorcan Tucker led Ireland’s resistance against Bangladesh in the Dhaka Test, batting out the third day after starting it on 27 for 4. Tucker became the second Irishman to score a century on Test debut, and the sixth wicketkeeper to do so, as his 108 involved two sizeable partnerships to keep them in the hunt. Ireland ended on 286 for 8, when everyone thought that Test would end early on the third day.The visitors’ 131-run lead may not look impressive but they have done enough to put questions in Bangladesh’s mind. The home side doesn’t have a great chasing record at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, where they haven’t won since 2020. Taijul Islam was the pick of the bowlers again, taking his tally to nine wickets in the match, but Shakib bowling just six overs in the day was a peculiar decision given that he looked fit and fielded all day.Tucker defied the Bangladesh spinners superbly. His celebration after reaching the hundred got cheers from the tiny crowd who appreciated the young batter’s century. His 111-run stand with Andy McBrine for the seventh wicket frustrated Bangladesh for 28.3 overs, as Ireland put together a string of partnerships. The visitors had started the day on 27 for 4 after their top order crumbled in 6.5 overs on the second evening. Shakib and Taijul shared those four wickets and looked menacing. But PJ Moor and Tector negated them for 10.1 overs late on the second day, before continuing in the same vein on the third morning.Litton dropped Tector on nine in the second over of the day, but that was the only chance that went down. Tector and Moor lasted 25.4 overs for the fifth wicket and though they added only 38, it served as the foundation for the rest of the day. Moor fell to the one shot he played away from his body, edging Shoriful Islam at the end of the first hour.Tector and Tucker picked up the tempo with some fine shots. Tucker started with a reverse-swept four off Mehidy Hasan Miraz, before Tector cracked a cover drive off Shoriful. Tucker then played two pulls against Ebadot Hossain, before launching Khaled over midwicket with a flick. Tector’s last boundary was a straight drive before he fell for 56, having struck seven fours and a six in his 159-ball innings.Bangladesh celebrate Peter Moor’s wicket•Walton
Their partnership had lasted 24 overs, and they added 72 at three runs per over. It was the boost that Ireland needed, and McBrine and Tucker took that momentum forward.Ireland scored 106 in the middle session, during which Tucker reached his hundred with a cover drive off Taijul. Tucker finally got out when he drove Ebadot waywardly to cover, where Shoriful let out a huge roar after taking the catch. But Ireland weren’t done yet. McBrine reached his maiden fifty, adding another 31 runs for the eighth wicket with Mark Adair.Even the way the day ended – the ninth-wicket pair of McBrine and Graham Hume batting out the remaining 8.3 overs – will encourage Ireland to have a go at Bangladesh on the fourth day.
Manchester City found themselves in an unusual position heading into Wednesday night’s Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest, having unbelievably lost their four league clashes before going into the contest at the Etihad.
Thankfully for City supporters watching on, Pep Guardiola’s men breezed past Forest to silence a growing contingent of doubters, with an emphatic 3-0 scoreline just what the doctor ordered after a dismal stretch of recent results.
The relief written on everyone’s faces associated with the usual table-toppers at the full-time whistle was clear to see, as stars such as a silky Kevin De Bruyne shone brightly all night long.
Standout performers for City
It goes without saying that the Belgian attacking midfielder is one of the best talents in the Premier League when he’s at his eye-catching best and he certainly was at the very top of his game across the 3-0 victory.
De Bruyne would ensure that any nerves inside the Etihad would dissipate when he resoundingly fired home the second goal of the contest, after some tricky feet from his compatriot, Jeremy Doku found him in plenty of space to strike a fierce effort past a helpless Matz Sels.
Whilst the City captain showed off his class with that finish, Doku would also time after time show off his daringness on the ball to push his stuttering side on to a much-needed three points, with the tricky 5 foot 8 ace amassing a stunning six successful dribbles to constantly leave the visitors guessing.
There were also the likes of Bernando Silva, who scored early on to kickstart the positive display, alongside Erling Haaland who set up Doku’s decisive third goal.
But, it was the performance of Jack Grealish that rightfully won plaudits when the dust had settled on the comprehensive win, with the former Aston Villa gem excelling in a deeper role for his bruised side to soften the continued blow of Rodri still being sidelined.
Grealish's performance in numbers
Accused of playing “like a mannequin at times” by ex-City shot-stopper Shay Given when chucked out to the left wing, Guardiola gambled on the exciting talent to come good in a holding midfield spot this mid-week, and it more than paid off.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
The City number ten would confidently spray the ball around the pitch across his 89 minutes, with Grealish exiting the field of play with a sublime 98% pass accuracy in-tact, alongside other glowing numbers.
That ability to keep things ticking in the centre of the park is akin to the absent Rodri, who averaged a 92% pass rate in the Premier League last season.
Jack Grealish
Looking at the graphic above, it was a well-rounded display from the England international, who offered the same energy as Rodri usually offers in spades with seven successful duels being won, alongside also showing off his comfortable nature joining in with attacks with two shots registered.
Grealish’s top showing in an unfamiliar position wouldn’t go unnoticed by Daily Express journalist Amos Murphy, who dished out a high 8/10 rating to the 29-year-old post-match, stating that he provided a ‘much-needed bounce’ centrally.
Struggling at times to find a position that has best suited him in Manchester, it could be that this tweak to play him alongside Ilkay Gundogan in a deep role is an ingenious one, with Guardiola also stating that the Birmingham-born star did “brilliantly” with what was asked of him.
With Rodri sidelined for the foreseeable, the Spaniard will hope he’s finally found an adequate short-term replacement for the Ballon D’Or winner in Grealish, rather than the ageing Gundogan, as fixtures continue to come full pelt this December in the Premier League.

The fixture list is also tough arguably, with a trip to Grealish’s former employers coming soon alongside a tense Manchester Derby, but Guardiola will hope his troops have turned a corner after a comfortable win over Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.
Man City readying move to sign "ball-striking monster" to replace Alvarez
Manchester City are looking to bolster their forward line with an exciting addition in January.
A £46 million international star’s camp has held discussions with Tottenham Hotspur over the player potentially signing for them in January, according to reports, with Ange Postecoglou’s side gearing up for a crucial January transfer window.
Tottenham set for "important" January after torrid run
Spurs have won just once in their last seven Premier League games, most recently dropping points at home to relegation-threatened Wolves, and the pressure is mounting on Postecoglou.
Ange considers cut-price January deal for ex-Man City defender at Tottenham
The Australian has been made aware that he could be available next month.

The Australian’s honeymoon period is well and truly over after an excellent debut campaign in the dugout last season, with Spurs currently mid-table and suffering from a major injury crisis which has plagued their squad for months.
Next, Tottenham are set to take on an in-form Newcastle United side in north London on January 4, and supporters will be hoping that they’re well on the way to bringing much-needed additions through the door by that point.

Postecoglou has admitted that Spurs are in need of reinforcements when the winter window opens for business in under 24 hours, while reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano says that January will be vital for the Lilywhites, as their manager faces speculation surrounding his position in the dugout.
“It’s obviously a difficult situation, but what I’m hearing is that Tottenham keep supporting and trusting Ange Postecoglou,” said Romano to GiveMeSport. “The January window is going to be important. Obviously, they need to do something.”
Right now, Spurs have a stark shortage of defensive options, with Destiny Udogie most recently suffering a hamstring problem – joining Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Ben Davies and number one shot-stopper Guglielmo Vicario all on the treatment table right now.
This has led to reports that Tottenham are considering a new centre-back in January, with Borussia Mönchengladbach star Ko Itakura among Postecoglou’s potential targets for the winter.
There are also suggestions that Spurs could add a new forward to their ranks, and one exit-bound ace they’ve been linked with is PSG’s Randal Kolo Muani.
The France international is a mainstay for his country, with Didier Deschamps calling him to every single Les Bleus squad since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Kolo Muani has bagged three goals in his last five games for France, but at PSG, he’s out of favour under Luis Enrique and widely tipped to leave in January.
Randal Kolo Muani contacts Tottenham over January move
As per The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, Kolo Muani’s camp have contacted Tottenham ahead of the looming January window for discussions, as the former Eintracht Frankfurt star sets his sights on a move to the Premier League.
PSG value the player at around £46 million, according to other reports, but he’ll most likely leave on a temporary deal – which could suit Postecoglou’s side down to the ground.
Kolo Muani has interest from clubs in Serie A and the Turkish Süper Lig, but it is believed that a move to the English top flight would be his preference and Tottenham are firm contenders for his signature.
The 26-year-old’s best season came at Eintracht, where he bagged 15 goals and 11 assists in the Bundesliga alone across 2022/2023.
