The former Arsenal star played a central role in Leverkusen’s double-winning campaign last season and still has three years left on his contract. However, with manager Xabi Alonso gone and midfield sensation Florian Wirtz set to depart, Xhaka could be the next big name out.

It is the latest development in a chaotic season for the German club. Notably, after leading Leverkusen to an invincible season last year, Alonso departed for Real Madrid, while defender Jonathan Tah joined Bayern Munich. Jeremie Frimpong has completed a move to Liverpool, with Wirtz also expected to join the Premier League champions. Xhaka's potential departure comes as Leverkusen undergoes a significant squad overhaul. The 32-year-old midfielder has been a key figure since joining from Arsenal in 2023, making 99 appearances.

While there were initial assumptions that Xhaka might return to Swiss club Basel, that option appears off the table, according to . The Swiss international had expressed his desire to return to his boyhood club during his brother Taulant's appearance in final Super League match, but Basel are reportedly not considering him as part of their current plans.

Xhaka is currently on international duty with Switzerland for the international friendlies and World Cup qualifiers. He is expected to be in action when the Swiss take on Mexico on June 7. The midfielder is likely to make a final decision on his club future after the conclusion of Switzerland’s international fixtures. Meanwhile, Leverkusen, under new manager Erik ten Hag, have begun reshaping their squad, with Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken the first signing of the summer.

He's better than Grealish: Man City ace who left for £0 is now worth £80m

As we approach the business end of the season, Manchester City still have plenty to play for.

Last weekend, despite leading twice through Erling Braut Håland and then Omar Marmoush, the Citizens were pegged back both times, ultimately held to a 2-2 draw by Brighton at the Etihad.

Brighton & Hove Albion'sJoaoPedroin action with Manchester City's Ruben Dias and Abdukodir Khusanov

So, having taken just seven points from their last six Premier League fixtures, Pep Guardiola’s team are fifth, thereby occupying the final Champions League position, but with both Newcastle and Brighton a mere one point behind.

So, as many of the Sky Blues’ superstars continue to underperform, including Jack Grealish, perhaps they could regret letting go of a player who’s now worth £80m.

Why Jack Grealish isn't in Thomas Tuchel's England squad

Less than four years after moving to Manchester City for £100m, a then British transfer record, Grealish is now merely an afterthought at the Etihad.

Across the Citizens’ last seven Premier League fixtures, the 29-year-old’s involvement has been reduced to a one-minute cameo at Tottenham, an unused substitute for the fifth time during this period on Saturday, his most recent league start coming before Christmas.

Well, considering Grealish has scored only two goals this season, going 392 days without a club goal, before converting a penalty against Salford, it’s easy to understand why Guardiola doesn’t pick him regularly.

Last week, there was widespread uproar when Thomas Tuchel announced his first-ever England squad, but not in relation to the fact Grealish wasn’t included, considering he featured in only four of their 17 internationals during 2024, most infamously left out of Gareth Southgate’s Euros squad.

Tuchel said at his press conference, “I love Jack, I love everything about him”, but added “he simply has no rhythm…Jack gets better and better the more minutes he plays”, suggesting he won’t pick him if he continues to be used sporadically at club level.

Tuchel-England-squad

So, while a current Man City wide-man continues to struggle, a former Man City youngster, and future England superstar, continues to make the Sky Blues look foolish for allowing him to leave for free as a teenager.

Former Man City academy star shining abroad

Jamie Gittens, formerly Jamie Bynoe-Gittens prior a summer re-brand, bounced around various English academies, spending time at Reading, Chelsea and then Manchester City, joining the Citizens as a 14-year-old.

However, he left Manchester just two years later, joining Borussia Dortmund in 2020, saying he wanted to follow the same path as Jadon Sancho, stating “I wanted to be like him”, adding “seeing other players before me doing it [moving abroad] persuaded me that I could try that as well”.

Well, this move has certainly worked out, given that the 20-year-old has now made 98 senior appearances for die Schwarzgelben, scoring 16 goals and providing ten assists, most notably on target against Bayern Munich in der Klassiker in November.

After being presented with the Golden Boy award in December 2023, Jude Bellingham described his former teammate as a “top talent”, while Fabrizio Romano labelled him ‘special’.

Meantime, former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock believes Gittens is every defender’s “worst nightmare”, while Saul Morris of Football Talent Scout describes him as an ‘attacking and direct winger’ who has ‘extremely high’ potential and will one day ‘establish himself in the England team’.

So, let’s assess how Gittens compares to the aforementioned Grealish this season.

As the table outlines, despite the fact Grealish has, on average, around 16 more touches per 90, Gittens ranks significantly higher for all attacking metrics: goals, assists, shooting, chances created and dribbling.

In this season’s Champions League, Gittens ranks seventh for goals – xG, with Grealish down in 181st, while the 20-year-old ranks sixth in the Bundesliga for the same metric, with the Man City man is 481st in the Premier League in terms of this statistic.

According to a report by Samuel Meade for the Daily Mirror, Dortmund value Gittens at £80m, with Arsenal and Chelsea supposedly interested, underlining that Man City made a major mistake allowing him to leave.

He's an amazing talent: Aston Villa are brewing a homegrown Rashford

Aston Villa made two signings during the winter window which could define their season.

Bringing in both Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford on temporary deals until the end of 2024/25 is turning into a masterstroke by manager Unai Emery.

Asensio has already scored seven goals in just 12 matches for Villa, including three in the Champions League. If he maintains this type of form, the club have a great chance of ending their 28-year wait for a major trophy.

Rashford may not have opened his account for the club yet, but four assists and an England re-call prove he is still contributing effectively.

How Marcus Rashford got back in the England squad

When Thomas Tuchel announced his first England squad nearly two weeks ago there were some surprises. Among them was Rashford.

Tuchel-England-squad

The Villa loanee has caught the eye since moving to the Midlands but hasn’t exactly played regular football. Either way, Tuchel likes what he sees and brought him back into the national set-up. But, why was that?

Well, Rashford’s finest game for Villa came against Chelsea in the Premier League last month and it perhaps gave us an inkling as to why he’s now back on the biggest of stages; the international scene.

Not only did he provide two assists in the eventual 2-1 victory for the club, but the Englishman also attempted four dribbles – succeeding with two – along with making three key passes, creating two big chances and completing 15 of his 16 attempted passes.

It was a joy seeing him perform to his best after struggling during the first half of the season at Manchester United.

The deal, which saw him move to the Midlands on loan, also includes an option to buy for a fee in the region of £40m. If he continues to impress, Emery may well spend the money to keep Rashford permanently.

However, might the club be brewing their homegrown version of the United loanee?

There have been plenty of top young talents to walk through the academy at Villa in recent years, Jack Grealish and Jacob Ramsey chief among them.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

The next superstar off the production line could be Cole Brannigan who has a bright future in the game.

The left-winger made waves throughout the 2023/24 campaign for the club. Not only did he score four goals in 20 games in the U18 Premier League, but he also grabbed three assists in the process.

Brannigan then signed his first professional contract last summer with Academy Manager Mark Harrison heaping praise on the teenager

He said: “We have been really pleased with how Cole has developed over the past 12 months, and this is a great reward for his development. He is a skilful wide attacking player who is creative in the final third.”

These comments have worked wonders for his confidence this term. The Irishman has played 19 games across several of the Villa youth teams, including U18s, U21s and the Youth League side, scoring 11 goals while registering two assists.

His ability to play across several positions in the final third naturally draws comparisons with Rashford. His eye for goal is also another key similarity.

The 17-year-old might not be in the first-team picture at this moment in time, but surely it won’t be long until Emery begins to take notice of his potential.

Should the £40m prove too expensive to sign Rashford in the summer, Brannigan could well turn out to be the club’s homegrown version of the 27-year-old. That’s a certainty.

Stop-clock trial begins with T20I series between West Indies and England

The first T20I between West Indies and England on Wednesday will see a stop clock used for the first time in international cricket. Part of a six-month experiment announced last month by the ICC, the stop clock will aim to restrict the time taken between overs and quicken the pace of play. The bowling team will need to be ready to bowl the first ball of their next over within 60 seconds of the previous over being completed. After two warnings, a third default by the bowling side will result in a five-run penalty imposed against them. The third umpire will start the clock at the completion of an over – the countdown would be displayed on the big screen at the ground, too. In case the batters have called for equipment change, drinks or if there is an injury break, and the 60 seconds are over the fielding time will not be penalised. In the scenario where the bowler is ready, but the batter is not ready, the match officials will deduct the time allowance from the batting team. For example if the batting team exceeded their allowances by two minutes, and are fielding second, then that additional time will be deducted from the overall time which could potentially lead them incurring both in-game and financial penalties if they fail to finish the overs before the cut-off time.As it stands, the stop clock will be used only in men’s ODIs and T20Is and goes one step further from the ICC’s change in playing conditions from 2022 where slow over-rates would force fielding sides to keep one fewer fielder outside the circle in the final over of a game. These in-game sanctions are in addition to any monetary fine that teams have to pay for slow over-rates under the ICC’s playing conditions.Stop clocks aimed at speeding up play are not new in sport. In major tennis tournaments, a player gets 25 seconds to get ready to serve between points. The idea of a stop clock in cricket was proposed in 2018 by the MCC’s World Cricket Committee that included Ricky Ponting, Saurav Ganguly and Kumar Sangakkara, among others, to reduce the ‘dead-time’ between overs in international games. The five-match T20I series between West Indies and England runs from December 13 to December 22, with the sides playing the series opener in Bridgetown, then moving to St George’s for two fixtures and finishing the series with two matches in Tarouba.

WA allrounder Aaron Hardie ruled out of Marsh Cup final against NSW

The allrounder has not recovered from the calf tightness he picked up in the last Sheffield Shield match

Alex Malcolm23-Feb-2024Western Australia have suffered a blow to their hopes of a hat-trick of 50-over domestic titles with Australia allrounder Aaron Hardie has been ruled out of the Marsh Cup final against New South Wales due to his calf injury.Hardie suffered calf tightness during WA’s last Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania. He only bowled four overs in the second innings of the game and did not field for the entirety of day three. Edu signing who was "like Saka" must never play for Arsenal again

da poker: Arsenal may still be in the Champions League, awaiting a daunting quarter-final tie with Real Madrid, but any ambitions they harboured on the domestic scene are surely now over.

da 888: The Gunners sit 12 points behind league leaders Liverpool and as a result, attentions must turn towards the summer window.

Whatever happens, incoming sporting director Andrea Berta needs to sign a new striker. If he doesn’t, he will already be on thin ice with supporters at the Emirates Stadium.

Alexander Isak is the number one target for a lot of clubs around Europe while Benjamin Sesko remains a long-term option for Arsenal. It’s also reported that Berta is a fan of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.

Before then, however, Arsenal may need a summer clearout. Here’s who could depart the Emirates…

Arsenal's big summer clearout

With Arteta’s men sat second in the title and in the last eight of Europe, a clearout perhaps seems a bit excessive.

However, the hierarchy need to raise the floor of the squad and they will only do that by getting rid of some of the deadwood.

So, let’s take a look at the wage bill. One of the prime candidates to be moved on this summer would have been Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian is the second-highest earner at the club behind Kai Havertz on £265k-per-week but his season-ending ACL injury has ended any hopes Arsenal had of potentially cashing in. Of course, we wish him a speedy recovery.

That aside, midfield duo Thomas Partey and Jorginho are likely to depart north London when their contracts expire in the summer. They won’t make the club any money but Oleksandr Zinchenko may do.

The Ukrainian has become a bit-part member of the first-team squad and having been linked with Borussia Dortmund in January, looks like he could be on his way out.

Another defender in Jakub Kiwior could also leave. He was touted with a return to Italy in the winter and has seen his game time decrease this season.

In the attacking department, Leandro Trossard could also be shelved. The Belgian has only scored six times this term and it’s alleged that there is interest from Saudi Arabia in the former Brighton star.

He’s not the only attacker who should be on the chopping block, however.

Edu's Brazilian acquisition will never play for Arsenal again

While Trossard’s future is very much up in the air, the future of winger Marquinhos looks a lot more clear-cut. Remember him? Just about, right?

The Brazilian talent signed for Arsenal in the summer of 2022 for just £3m, with Edu and Co hoping to repeat the success story of Gabriel Martinelli’s introduction to English football.

Marquinhos initially made quite a big impression, notably scoring on his debut in September 2022, finding the back of the net in a Europa League tie with FC Zurich.

Possessing a dangerous left foot and causing havoc from the right-hand side, it drew comparisons to a certain Bukayo Saka. Speaking after that goal, Martin Keown commented that “it was like Saka in that position, it’s almost a copycat performance.”

Sadly, since that night in Switzerland, the young forward hasn’t really taken his game to a strong level.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast’s ‘First Impressions’ series has everything you need.

He ended his debut campaign in England by appearing in six games and remarkably hasn’t been seen in Arsenal colours again, last appearing for the senior side in January 2023, an FA Cup tie with Oxford United.

Since his first year in England, Marquinhos has endured loan spells at Norwich City, Nantes, Fluminense and Cruzeiro.

Looking at the numbers, it’s safe to say that the 21-year-old has struggled big time to find form. He’s still young but it looks as though his immediate career is back in his homeland of Brazil.

He’s now playing for Cruzeiro having signed on loan in January and won’t return until December, that’s providing they don’t utilise their option to buy.

Either way, this is a player who is destined never to play for the club again. He’s gone from looking like a Saka regen to a player lacking end product.

Warner, Maxwell one-two knocks Netherlands out cold

It was a massive win, with Maxwell scoring the fastest century in World Cups, and Bas de Leede delivering the most expensive over in men’s ODI history

Vithushan Ehantharajah25-Oct-20233:11

Pujara: ‘Once Maxwell gets going nobody can stop him’

It was the most brutal of one-twos. First came David Warner with the jab, then Glenn Maxwell with the “lights out” uppercut. A 104 from the opener had the Netherlands weary, but it was Maxwell’s astonishing 106 from just 44 deliveries that administered the most devastating of knock-out blows. Australia posted 399 for 8, standing triumphantly at the halfway stage over floored opponents, who were unable to rise off the canvas, eventually succumbing to a chastening 309-run defeat – the largest in margin in men’s ODI World Cup history.Just 18 days after Aiden Markram had seized the record for the fastest century in ODI World Cups, against Sri Lanka at this very ground, Maxwell ripped it off him in nine fewer balls, needing just 40 to pass three figures. It was the culmination of an almighty assault on the Dutch bowlers, most notably Bas de Leede. The talented allrounder now has the ignominy of the most expensive figures in men’s ODIs, returning 2 for 115 – 43 of them coming in his last two (including 28 from the last), all courtesy Maxwell.Beyond saving the blushes of compatriots Mick Lewis and Adam Zampa – previous joint-holders of the most expensive figures in the format – Maxwell’s second World Cup century (and third overall) shifted the complexion of the match against a courageous Netherlands outfit. They had broadly kept Australia in check, even while Warner, coming off the back of 163 against Pakistan in the previous match, marched to a 22nd ODI hundred.ESPNcricinfo LtdWarner’s main allies were Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, the more dominant partners in stands of 132 and 84 for the second and third wicket, respectively. Had Max O’Dowd not botched a pick-up at midwicket, Warner might have been run-out on 32 when both he and Smith found themselves at the non-striker’s end. Roelof van der Merwe was then adjudged to have grounded a sharp chance at midwicket when Warner had 73, before completing an equally tough grab at backward point to see off Smith for 71.Labuschagne’s dismissal – de Leede’s first, caught mid-off – was the first of three to fall for just 23 runs, culminating in Warner’s dismissal, paddling Logan van Beek to fine leg, well-taken by Aryan Dutt, two balls after registering a sixth World Cup century off 91. With ten overs to go, Australia were 268 for 5.Maxwell had come in at the end of the 39th over – the latest an ODI centurion has arrived at the crease – but only faced his first ball midway through the 41st. In retrospect, the back-to-back fours off de Leede to get him off the mark were a sign of things to come.He was probably culpable for Cameron Green’s run-out, pushing for two only for the allrounder – drafted in for Marcus Stoinis, who had a sore calf – to be found short of his ground with a direct hit. After Teja Nidamanuru failed to get to a difficult chance running back from mid-off when Maxwell was on 24, the carnage began.Adam Zampa got himself a third successive four-for•AFP/Getty ImagesFrom 35 off 21 – already a brisk start – Maxwell got out his reverse sweep for the first time to get Paul van Meekeren away over point, before smashing the follow-up slower ball over square leg for the first of eight sixes. Another reverse over point – this time all the way – brought the fifty up in 27 deliveries, before going over third two balls later, both off de Leede.A brace of conventional sixes followed in the 48TH over, bowled by van Beek, carted over wide mid-on and then sliced over cover point, sandwiching a pull to midwicket by Pat Cummins, possessor of the best seat in the house. Then came de Leede’s chastening final set; bunted down the ground for fours to start, before being launched into the stands at wide mid-on, over square leg and then further behind square after bowling an above-waist full toss as Maxwell stormed through to three figures. From first six to last, the white-ball phenom struck 66 runs from just 19 deliveries. Maxwell celebrated with a baby-rocking celebration, a nod to his wife and first child, Logan, who was born last month, both of whom arrived in India earlier this week. The free-hit was uncharacteristically scuffed for a single, de Leede getting out of the over with a dot to Cummins. Though Maxwell was able to begin the final over with a fortuitous boundary off van Beek, his innings ended two balls later courtesy of an excellent catch by Sybrand Engelbrecht at long-off. Mitchell Starc came and went for a golden duck – van Beek’s fourth – leaving Cummins, who had contributed just eight to the seventh-wicket stand of 104, to close out the innings with just his second boundary, smeared through midwicket.ESPNcricinfo LtdWith 400 to get, Netherlands opener Vikramjit was never going to die wondering, racing to 21 from 13 courtesy five fours. And though he would survive a run-out opportunity after O’Dowd left him high and dry with a dodgy call, saved by Josh Hazlewood’s awry throw after fielding in his follow-through, he was less fortunate on 25. A well-timed back-foot punch to mid-off found Maxwell, who had started the chase off the field, and, well…. you know what happened next.By then, O’Dowd had chopped Starc on to his own stumps. Colin Ackermann then fell lbw to Halzewood, before de Leede’s grim day was compounded with an appeal against Cummins for a similar dismissal that Hawkeye suggested was trimming leg stump. Engelbrecht’s seemingly perfect pull shot off Mitchell Marsh’s second ball nestled into hands of a leaping Warner just in front of the square-leg sponge, leaving Netherlands 62 for 5 at the first drinks break. The pause on the wickets lasted just 27 deliveries. Nidamanuru was unfortunate enough to glove Marsh down the leg side, then Zampa snared two-in-two, as van Beek cut to Josh Inglis and van der Merwe was trapped in front by a googly. Dutt survived the hat-trick ball – another googly – with a thick inside edge.He had no such luck when struck in front while on the back foot in Zampa’s next over. The legspinner then secured a third four-wicket haul in a row when Inglis managed to shovel the ball back on to the stumps after van Meekeren’s back foot had crept in front of the line following an attempted sweep. With that, Netherlands were 90 all out, their final five batters falling for just six runs. All the while, skipper Scott Edwards cut a forlorn figure at the other end. He will know a defeat of this magnitude will not define his team, though they now occupy an unflattering spot on the wrong side of history.

Player retentions for eight teams confirmed ahead of draft in March

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Feb-2024Jason Roy, Dawid Malan and Amy Jones are among the England players who will on the block in next month’s draft for the 2024 Hundred, after player retentions for the eight teams were confirmed.Roy was one of the most high-profile names among those released, having helped Oval Invincibles to win the men’s competition last year. Roy averaged 17.11 with a strike rate of 128.33 and his expected involvement in Major League Cricket – which will clash with the Hundred in 2024 – is likely to have been a factor. Northern Superchargers, who finished last in 2023, will have the first pick in the men’s draft, with Birmingham Phoenix starting things off in the women’s.Teams will each have one Right-to-Match card at their disposal, allowing them to re-sign a player who was in their squad last year, as long as they match the salary band of the rival team bidding in the draft. The Hundred will get going on July 23 with a double-header at The Oval and run for four weeks, with the finals to be held at Lord’s on August 18.
