Seeds of England victory sown long before hat-trick finish

Toby Roland-Jones, who had a starring role on his Test debut, came through a scheme that is under threat

#PoliteEnquiries: Does Moeen compare with Murali, Saqlain and Ashwin?

When a game finishes as dramatically as the Oval Test, it would be easy to overlook all the moments that led to the final outcome. Moeen Ali’s hat-trick – the first he has taken at any level of the game – was certainly a fitting ending to the ground’s 100th Test.It stretched a remarkable run of records Moeen is accumulating in recent times: already one of just three men to score 1,000 Test runs and take 30 Test wickets in a calendar year (Ian Botham and Jacques Kallis are the other two) after a strong 2016, he recently reached the milestone of 100 wickets and 2,000 runs quicker than Garry Sobers, Imran Khan, Kapil Dev, Botham et al, gained a place on the honours board at Lord’s denied the great Shane Warne and returned the best figures by an England offspinner at Trent Bridge since 1956. It can’t keep being dismissed as an aberration, can it?Now he has become the first man in history to take a Test hat-trick at The Oval and the first England spinner to take one anywhere since 1938. He has 18 wickets at a cost of 14.72 in this series. And, with the confidence to give the ball more air and attempt more variation, there is no reason to doubt there is more to come. But the seeds of England’s victory were sown long before Moeen claimed that hat-trick.Most crucially, they were sown on the first day when Alastair Cook negated a dangerous attack and some treacherous conditions to set a platform on which Ben Stokes was able to build. Then, after Stokes had contributed the most mature performance of his career to date, Toby Roland-Jones was able to exploit conditions which might have been tailor-made for him. An assured debut from Tom Westley and typically selfless half-century from Jonny Bairstow rammed home the advantage. While it is true Roland-Jones will rarely encounter Test surfaces offering as much assistance to his style of bowling as he found in the first innings here, his virtues – height, accuracy, an ability to hit the seam and adapt his bowling to the circumstances – will have value everywhere. That includes Australia. While he faces a huge fight to keep his place once the likes of Chris Woakes and Mark Wood recover their fitness, it would be a major surprise if he is not part of the Ashes squad now.Such was Stokes’ hostility and Roland-Jones’ accuracy, James Anderson was not called upon to bowl until more than an hour into the final day. He finished the second innings having bowled the fewest overs of the England attack; a scenario that has been unthinkable for much of the last decade, when a succession of England captains have turned to Anderson at the first opportunity. Is this an example of his waning powers?Up to a point, perhaps. There’s little doubt that Anderson’s pace is diminished and little doubt he is not too far from the end now. But it is only a Test since he claimed a five-for and, even here, he bowled 26 overs for 51 runs and claimed three wickets. At worst, he demanded respect and retained control. So he, too, will surely go to Australia. And if his diminishing role on the pitch is compensated by the wisdom and experience he provides to other bowlers, so be it. “There’s a reason he fields at mid-off,” Joe Root said afterwards. “Don’t underestimate what he brings to this team.”But it was, without doubt, England’s more disciplined and sophisticated first innings batting that set-up this win. After the laissez-faire nonsense of some recent performances, England showed a willingness to graft that will complement their natural flair. This was probably the most pleasing element of their performance.Could Toby Roland-Jones have been lost to the game?•Associated PressOther seeds were sown long before that. There were three men in this England side who had developed, in part at least, through the MCC system. Both Westley and Roland-Jones graduated through the MCC Universities scheme (MCCU), while Dawid Malan was an MCC Young Cricketer (MCC YC).Westley and Malan may well have ‘made it’ without the MCC’s assistance. Westley was already on the radar of Essex when he went to Durham University, while Malan had played first-class cricket in South Africa before benefitting from the MCC YC scheme that is designed to catch late developers and the best of those who are missed by the county system. But Roland-Jones? He had slipped out of the county scene when he went to university. Originally in the Middlesex system as a batsman, he benefited from a late growth spurt that bestowed new gifts upon him as a bowler. Had he not gone to Leeds-Bradford, he would probably have been lost to the game. The MCCU scheme is a remarkable asset to the English game. Set-up by former England opener Graeme Fowler in 1996, the aim was to ensure young people did not have to choose between education and cricket. By providing them with good quality coaching and playing opportunities at the same time as allowing them to gain a further education at one of six centres (Cambridge, Oxford, Cardiff, Durham, Leeds-Bradford and Loughborough), the scheme not only encourages some into sport who might otherwise be lost, but prepares those who do break into the professional for the life after their sporting retirement. The most famous graduate is probably Andrew Strauss, but there have been many more including Zafar Ansari, Sam Billings, Monty Panesar and Heather Knight of recent England players. At present, somewhere approaching 25% (the ratio has risen recently) of current county cricketers have come through the programme. Many more go on to coach at schools or in clubs. Nearly all finish with a degree to fall back upon when their playing career ends. It has one of the great, though largely unheralded, success stories of English cricket in recent years. It is doubtful anything has done more to avoid hardship in future generations of cricketers. But the scheme is under threat. Partly because some believe the games do not warrant first-class status – and it is true, they are sometimes uncomfortably one-sided – and partly because it is currently funded almost entirely by the MCC, it has recently been the subject of an extensive review by independent consultants, Inside Track. Now a working party (including Strauss and the MCC’s head of cricket, John Stephenson) has been formed to study the review and consider its recommendations. It is possible the universities’ first-class status will be rescinded entirely – which might well disincentive some students into attending university or pursuing a career in cricket – or, as an outside possibility, be left unchanged.A more likely option would see the university centres amalgamated – perhaps into something like MCCU North and MCCU South – for their first-class games against the counties and into a Combined MCCU team for the 50-over competition. That, it is argued, might concentrate the standard of the sides while continuing to provide the carrot of first-class cricket to prospective students. Whether it would encourage as many students into the scheme as is the case at present is debatable. There is another aspect to this. We do not have to look very far to find example of cricketers – sometimes highly successful cricketers – who have fallen on hard times after their playing career has ended. It has, at times, looked like an epidemic. While the PCA does tremendous work in helping players prepare for the challenges of life after cricket, little can help more than a good education and time to mature in a benevolent yet still high-performance environment. The one-sided nature of some MCCU contests might be considered a price worth paying when compared to such gains. While the example of Roland-Jones provides timely evidence of the cricketing merit of the programme, it is to be hoped that the working party gives proper consideration to the duty of care the game owes to the next generation of players by preparing them for more than cricket.Morally and practically, the MCCU scheme is working. Tinker with it at our peril.

De Kock bursts through still waters after drought-breaking ton

He’s not a cricketer who lets emotions bubble to the surface, but getting to a Test century after two years meant plenty to the wicketkeeper-batsman

Liam Brickhill in Johannesburg13-Jan-2019Quinton de Kock doesn’t seem to be the sort of cricketer to over-think things. His batting has a laissez faire air to it, and away from cricket it’s the simple things that seem to make him happy. If his social media feeds are anything to go by, he lives an uncomplicated, happy life with his wife Sasha and jack russells Gia and Mia, going fishing as often as possible, adopting the odd nyala antelope and generally kicking back Mzansi-style. On the pitch, he’s not enjoyed much success with the bat in cricket’s longest format over the last 18 months, but if his form was a concern to him, he hid those worries well. But still waters run deep, and it may be that de Kock’s diffidence is in some way part of an on-field persona: that he, perhaps, thinks and cares more than he sometimes lets on, that his reticence masks a fierce desire to succeed, and that his Test drought has been a concern. His 129 against Pakistan at the Wanderers was de Kock’s first century in Test cricket in just over two years, his fourth overall, and his very first in the second innings. When he finally got to the mark, having gone 39 innings without reaching three figures, just for a moment the emotion spilled forth from one of the game’s most low-temperature cricketers. This was a hundred that really meant something, and that with it came a huge sense of relief. The instinctive freedom that has made de Kock so devastating in limited-overs cricket has not translated into Test success – at least, not yet, and certainly not in the last year or so. In 2018, he averaged just 20.41 before Pakistan arrived, but over three Tests he’s clicked once again in the longest format.Cathartic hundreds aren’t often easy ones, although the way de Kock cruised through the early exchanges this morning, rifling drive after drive through the arc between point and mid off with a languid, flowing ease and racing to fifty from 49 deliveries, suggested that this three-figure knock was fated. But even a player as laid back as de Kock wobbled just a touch in the nervous 90s.His favoured cut took him to 98, and a flick through mid-on for a single left him on the brink. Suddenly, a cricketer who has thrived on trusting his instincts in the heat of the moment seemed to be thinking an awful lot about how he might find his next run.If de Kock seemed a tad nervous, things were no more calm up in the press box, where the situation in the middle evoked memories long buried – 20 years long, in fact – but not forgotten by Shaun Pollock, who compared the atmosphere to that of the Klusener/Donald kerfuffle in the semi-final of the 1999 World Cup.Certain similarities were in plain view: a left-handed batsman on strike, a fast bowler at the other end, one run needed, and the feeling that there might be an extraordinarily thin margin between glory and disaster.Facing up to Faheem Ashraf on 99, a touch over two years since he last lifted his lid and raised his bat to all corners in a Test match, de Kock missed out on a full toss, punching it straight to mid-on. Then came a straight drive that would have done the trick, had Kagiso Rabada’s right heel not got in the way of it, deflecting the ball to mid-on with de Kock making a rapid turnaround having made it halfway down the track already. While everyone else on the field – Rabada included – could see the lighter side of it all, de Kock looked as if he might burst out of frustration. He pinged the off side field three more times in the over, surviving a direct hit at the striker’s end just to ramp up the tense atmosphere even further before it was all released with another straight drive that this time beat the bowler, the stumps, mid-off and Rabada’s boot to bring up the ton. Then there were still waters no more, with all the emotions bubbling to the surface. He wasn’t done there, and now unchained by the burden that indifferent form inevitably places on the shoulders of even the most chilled out cricketers, de Kock cut loose. Clearing his front leg and reverting to the style that has built his formidable limited-overs reputation, he thumped Hasan Ali repeatedly through cover, shrugging off an edge that was dropped by Sarfraz Ahmed behind the stumps with a smile, and then immediately laying into the bowling again. Having set South Africa up with his 102-run stand with Hashim Amla, de Kock pressed home their advantage with a 79-run partnership alongside Rabada, launching his team beyond 300 by smoking a slog sweep onto the grass banks. This was vintage de Kock, which is perhaps a bit of an odd thing to say about a player who is only 26, but points to the profound impression he has already made on South African cricket. A household name by the age of 21, de Kock is a product of the highveld, and his sharp eye, quick hands and light feet are most suited to the pitches one finds in these parts, which are usually fast and bouncy. The ball flies in Johannesburg, both off the pitch and off the bat.Over the last two years, de Kock might have struggled to strike the balance between carefree and confident in his Test game, but with a drought-breaking hundred under his belt at the Wanderers, he once again found that most vital element: freedom.

INEOS regret signing "worst" £36m Man Utd dud and want him sold with Onana

Manchester United and INEOS regret signing an Old Trafford “imposter” and want him sold alongside Andre Onana, according to a new report.

Andre Onana ‘unsettled’ at Man Utd and set to be sold

The Red Devils and Sir Jim Ratcliffe announced plans for a brand new 100,000-capacity stadium earlier this month, however, prior to that, the co-owner hit out at recent signings by the club.

Ratcliffe said: “If you look at the players we are buying this summer, that we didn’t buy, we’re buying Antony, we’re buying Casemiro, we’re buying Onana, we’re buying Hojlund, we’re buying Sancho. These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we’ve inherited those things and have to sort that out.”

He added: “Some are not good enough and some probably are overpaid, but for us to mould the squad that we are fully responsible for, and accountable for, will take time.”

In regards to Onana, it has been claimed that Man Utd regret signing the goalkeeper, who is unsettled and has been for some time at Old Trafford.

The Cameroon international, who has been a regular under Ruben Amorim, is wanted in Saudi Arabia and looks set to be sold over the coming months. However, the club are also kicking themselves at a more recent addition who could follow Onana out of Manchester.

Man Utd also regret signing Joshua Zirkzee and want him gone

According to a report from Spain, Man Utd regret signing Joshua Zirkzee and already want him out of Old Trafford.

The forward, who signed for just over £36m from Bologna last summer and was the first addition under Ratcliffe, has struggled to make an impact in England, scoring just six goals in 44 games, something which has raised doubts for United’s coaching team and staff.

Zirkzee

The report adds on Zirkzee that the ‘possibility of a sale is already being considered from the boardroom if an offer comes in that allows for a partial recovery of the investment made’.

Talking earlier this year, pundit Jamie O’Hara slammed the Red Devils and singled out Zirkzee for criticism, calling the forward an “imposter” and “one of the worst players” he’s seen for Man Utd.

“Manchester United are absolutely terrible – they’re one of the worst teams in the Premier League at the moment. They’re awful at the back and their midfield is non-existent. Their options in attack are terrible as well – Amad Diallo is the only player who looks like he deserves to play for them.

“Joshua Zirkzee is one of the worst players I’ve ever seen in a Manchester United shirt – it’s unbelievable that he’s playing for them. He’s an absolute imposter!”

Fewer touches than Vicario: Ange must now bench 5/10 Spurs star

Tottenham Hotspur put in a dominant performance away to struggling Ipswich Town to win 4-1 at Portman Road. The Lilywhites were impressive, and took their chances well, with standout performances across the pitch for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

It was a fast start from Spurs, with Brennan Johnson scoring two goals inside the first half an hour of the game. The Welshman was impressive and managed to fire home two passes from captain Son Heung-min.

Ipswich did get themselves a goal back, thanks to former Chelsea and Arsenal academy star Omari Hutchinson. It was poor defending from the Lilywhites, leaving the Tractor Boys’ attacking midfielder unmarked in the box, for a simple finish.

However, with 77 minutes on the clock, the in-form Djed Spence saw his effort deflect home, after some brilliant quick feet from James Maddison. Dejan Kulusevski made it 4-1 with six minutes of the 90 left, with a wonderful strike. After picking up the ball from a flick-on, he went on a marauding run into the Ipswich half, cut inside on his left foot and curled his shot home.

It was an impressive and dominant showing from Postecoglou’s side, with Johnson one of the standout players in East Anglia.

Johnson’s stats vs. Ipswich

23-year-old Johnson has been in excellent form for much of the season in a Spurs shirt. The Nottingham-born winger has nine Premier League goals this season, in 23 games, including his two strikes against Kieran McKenna’s side.

The first goal was a typical poacher’s finish from the winger this season. He got on the end of a low cross from Son at the back post, deflecting the ball into the back of the net. His second was also set up by his captain, but this was a well-directed effort from 12 yards out, into the right-hand corner.

He has now scored more League goals than any other Spurs player this term, an impressive return from the winger. He was given an 8/10 post-match rating from Alasdair Gold, Tottenham Hotspur correspondent for Football.London, who described his first goal as a ‘trademark’ finish.

Johnson’s stats from Sofascore at the end of the game show just how well he played. The winger had 26 crucial touches at Portman Road, completed 15 out of 20 passes and had an expected goals tally of 1.11xG.

As effective as the Spurs winger was against Ipswich, the same cannot be said for a fellow attacker, who struggled to impact the game.

The Spurs player who struggled vs. Ipswich

In a game where so many attacking players in that famous White shirt stood out, it was a disappointing performance from January signing Mathys Tel, who was leading the line today. The Frenchman was substituted with 15 minutes to go.

Performance in Numbers

His performances warranted a 5/10 rating from Gold after full-time, which was the lowest of any Spurs starter. The journalist said it was a ‘tough day at the office’ for Tel, who ‘didn’t do too much’ with the ball when he managed to get possession.

Indeed, Tel did not see much of the ball during the game. The attacker, whose parent club is German side Bayern Munich, had just 17 touches of the ball, fewer even than Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario’s 36. Tel also won one duel out of six and had a pass accuracy of 63%.

That will certainly be a performance that might worry Postecoglou. There is no doubting Tel’s quality; he was once described as a “talented player” by former Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann.

However, perhaps his adaption to the Premier League will take a few games, which is more than understandable. Assuming he joins Spurs permanently, this is an investment for the future as well as the present.

However, for the Lilywhites’ next fixture, a midweek clash with Manchester City in North London, there is every chance Postecoglou takes him out of the starting lineup to give him respite, in what is a must-win game for his side.

    WHAT BRUNO FERNANDES SAID

Skipper Fernandes is among those that could be moved on as funds are raised for new additions and Ruben Amorim freshens up an underperforming squad. The Portugal international has said of his future: “If the club thinks it's time to part ways because they want to do some cashing in, it is what it is.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Fernandes could now tread a similar path to fellow countryman Cristiano Ronaldo, with the reporting on discussions taking place between the 30-year-old midfielder’s representatives and Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.

    DID YOU KNOW?

A “take it or leave it” offer is said to have been tabled, with Fernandes having 72 hours in which to make a decision. His agent, Miguel Pinto, has been in Riyadh to talk terms – with Al-Hilal eager to have business completed before the 2025 Club World Cup gets underway.

Approach made: West Ham now make first move for "remarkable" £44m striker

West Ham United have now initiated first contacts over a summer deal for a “remarkable” striker, who is attracting a lot of attention from the Premier League, according to a report.

Hammers lacking an out-and-out striker

Back-to-back wins against Arsenal and Leicester City at the end of February have almost certainly staved off any lingering fears about relegation, with Jarrod Bowen bagging the only goal of the game to secure an impressive 1-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium.

However, the Hammers have since gone on to score just one goal in their last two games, with Graham Potter having to make do without an out-and-out striker, given that Niclas Füllkrug and Michail Antonio are out injured.

As such, while Bowen is enjoying another impressive season in front of goal, Potter has identified the need to bring in a new striker this summer, and Strasbourg’s Emanuel Emegha is among the targets, having regularly been amongst the goals in Ligue 1 this term.

Potter has also told the West Ham board he wants them to sign Lille’s Jonathan David, but with Arsenal and Barcelona in the race for the Canadian’s signature, it could be difficult to get a deal done, and the manager may have to move on to other targets.

One option could be Fiorentina’s Moise Kean, with a report from Italy revealing the Hammers have now initiated first contacts over a deal for the Italian, but there may be fierce competition for his signature.

Fiorentina'sMoiseKeancelebrates after the match

A number of Premier League clubs have expressed an interest in Kean, including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, although the transfer is still in the preliminary stages.

Fiorentina are protected by a €52m (£44m) release clause in the striker’s contract, but it is unclear whether they would insist on receiving the full amount.

Kean enjoying "remarkable" Serie A campaign

It is clear to see why some top Premier League clubs are coming forward for the Italy international, given his extremely impressive record in front of goal this season.

CBS’s Marco Messina has also lauded the Fiorentina marksman for his “remarkable” all-round performances, suggesting he offers a lot more to his team than merely goals.

That said, while the former Everton man was undefeated against West Ham during his time with the Toffees, there will still be concern about his previous stint in the Premier League.

Kean scored just four goals in 39 games for Everton, and while it is clear he has made improvements to his game since then, his goal record in England casts doubt over whether a £44m fee is justifiable.

New Zealand captain Tim Southee and his predecessor Kane Williamson are set to play their 100th Tests together during the upcoming home series against Australia. March 8 will mark the occasion, the start of the second of two matches in the series, which follows a set of three T20Is.The 14-member Test squad also includes Daryl Mitchell who has been on the sidelines recently tending to a long-term foot injury. Scott Kuggeleijn gets a look in as well, replacing Kyle Jamieson who has picked up a back problem and is looking at a year out of the game. The NZC press release with the squad which arrived on Saturday also said, “Trent Boult, who will feature in the T20I series against Australia, was not considered for Test selection due to minimal recent red ball cricket – his last Test coming in June 2022 against England in Leeds.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Southee and Williamson grew up playing cricket alongside each other, rising up the ranks from the Under-19 levels to become their country’s second-highest wicket-taker and leading run-scorer respectively. The two of them had also played their 50th Test together, against Zimbabwe in 2016, and will join Stephen Fleming, Daniel Vettori, Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor as the only other New Zealand men with 100 Tests to their name.”Their achievements at Test level speak for themselves,” head coach Gary Stead said, “And they are undoubtedly two of the greatest players to have ever worn the New Zealand Test shirt.”Southee will follow Taylor, Virat Kohli and David Warner as just the fourth player in history to have played 100 matches in each format. The first Test will begin on February 29 in Wellington and will signal the return of a vital member of this team. Mitchell has become such a dependable fixture in this Black Caps team that among those who have played 20 Tests, the only person who averages more than his 53.46 is Williamson with 55.90.”[Mitchell] is a key member of the group and has proven, with his performances over the past 12 to 18 months, how much value he adds to the Test team,” New Zealand selector Sam Wells said. “Daryl will keep focusing on his rehabilitation over the next week and will be fit and ready for the first Test in Wellington.”Kuggeleijn has been picked on the back of his performances for New Zealand A against Australia A last year, including match figures of 9-113 and an unbeaten 101 to lead the team to victory in the first four-day game. The Northern Districts seamer has continued his form in the Plunket Shield, leading the bowling charts with 22 wickets at 16 from the first four rounds. Will O’Rourke retains his place after leaving one of the more lasting first impressions – the 22-year old quick claimed the best match figures by a debutant for New Zealand when he picked up 9 for 93 against South Africa in Hamilton earlier this week.Mitchell Santner continues as the specialist spin bowling option, while recent Test double-centurion Rachin Ravindra and allrounder Glenn Phillips lending support.Meanwhile, Matt Henry and Tim Seifert have been ruled out of the T20I series. Their replacements will be Ben Sears and Will Young.Henry suffered some hip soreness following the second Test against South Africa and will undergo a short period of rest and strengthening ahead of the Test series. Seifert has been withdrawn due to a torn abductor suffered while training for Northern Districts earlier in the week.”Matt’s understandably disappointed, but a break for the T20s will ensure he’s fully fit and ready to go for the Tests against Australia later this month,” said Stead. “We’re gutted for Tim who has been a strong performer over recent series and is an important part of the squad. We’re hopeful he’ll make a swift recovery ahead of an important period of T20I cricket for the team.”New Zealand Test squad vs AustraliaTim Southee (capt), Tom Blundell, Matt Henry, Scott Kuggeleijn, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Will O’Rourke, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Neil Wagner, Kane Williamson, Will YoungUpdated New Zealand T20I squadMitchell Santner (capt), Finn Allen, Trent Boult (games 2 & 3), Mark Chapman, Josh Clarkson, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Ben Sears, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee (game 1), Will Young

Ornstein: Chelsea now want to sign £50m star scouted in international break

Chelsea aren’t the type of club to mess about when it comes to transfer interest, and it will come as no surprise to hear they are now hot on the trail of one of Europe’s rising commodities ahead of the summer window, per reports.

Chelsea are already making moves ahead of the summer

Enzo Maresca has endured a mixed spell in charge of Chelsea, but may finish the campaign with a top-four finish and silverware in the form of the Conference League should all go to plan.

Taking into account that he is still fairly new to senior management, any such outcome would have to go down as a success story at Stamford Bridge. Looking to build on solid foundations, the Blues boss has already sealed deals to bring Dario Essugo and Geovany Quenda to west London from Sporting Clube de Portugal for a fee in excess of £60m.

Unlikely to stop there, Chelsea are ready to sell Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix to fund their striker pursuit, potentially freeing up £345,000 per week in wage expenditure to hone in on improving other areas of the squad.

Finding a balance that adheres to PSR regulations will be a challenge. Still, Todd Boehly and company are well-versed in the art of the deal, so expect plenty of incomings from start to finish in the upcoming window.

While their strategy of stockpiling young talent has its critics, they aren’t the only club in the world keen to amass an empire of assets, either at first-team level or for trade on the market.

Continuing the theme of pushing towards a younger squad profile, Maresca has now put his hat in the ring for one of Europe’s most promising defenders, according to recent developments.

Chelsea 'looking closely' at Bournemouth breakout star Dean Huijsen

According to David Ornstein (as per by CaughtOffside), Chelsea are ‘looking closely’ at Bournemouth star Dean Huijsen and may look to trigger his £50m release clause, which is active from this summer.

He stated: “He is expected to move for that £50m clause, which is active in the summer, and I’m sure Bournemouth, the player and his suitors would ideally like some clarity sooner rather than later so they can plan accordingly.

“We know Chelsea have been looking closely at him, Newcastle have been heavily linked but not sure I see that one materialising and even massive clubs on the continent like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are being mentioned in certain quarters.”

Reports in Spain lay out that Chelsea watched Huijsen in action for Spain against the Netherlands in the Nations League, lending credence to the notion that they could strike to bring the Amsterdam-born man to west London. In light of his potential, he has been labelled “excellent” by prominent X personality Jacek Kulig.

Real Madrid have also run checks on the defender and could offer some serious competition in the battle for his signature. They won’t be the only ones judging his recent form.

Now, it remains to be seen whether Chelsea will firm up their initial admiration for the defender by making an approach once the summer window gets underway.
