New David Warner, same old wheelhouse

He’s not quite been himself since returning from his ban, and he’s been weirdly subdued in the Powerplay. But he’s still the same player deep down

Jarrod Kimber20-Jun-2019David Warner and Ed Cowan met mid-pitch to discuss a bowling change. This was the WACA in 2012, and India seamer Vinay Kumar was about to bowl his first ball in Tests. Australia had dismissed India for 161, and now the openers were looking to make it to stumps. After five overs, Warner had pushed Australia to 30, and now the two batsmen were chatting about the new bowler. They agreed that they should take a good look at Vinay. Cowan worked one into the gap. Warner played out two dot balls with three slips behind him. The next ball, Vinay bowled a slightly overpitched ball around off stump that curved into the stumps. It was a perfectly acceptable Test ball, it could have been punched back down the ground, or defended into the covers. Warner launched it back over Vinay’s head. Cowan went down to him and asked why he’d played that shot.”It was in my wheelhouse.”

“You’re going to the cricket ground, aren’t you? Yeah, you may be able to help me; whatever happened to those cheating Aussie guys? Was it Warner?” my Uber driver asked on the way to Bristol to cover Australia’s first match at this World Cup. The driver wasn’t a cricket fan, and he couldn’t even remember what they had done wrong, but still, David Warner was on his mind.WATCH on Hotstar (India only) – How Australia cut looseWhether it is people in cricket asking me what it was like to work with him at St Lucia Stars, the media asking if he will enjoy the booing, or fans asking about his batting, I spend most of my time talking about David Warner.Steven Smith’s seen as a pure cricket nerd swept up in the desire to win, Cameron Bancroft as an ingenue, and the rest of the team at Newlands as clueless spectators. David Warner’s role as pantomime villain is now so entrenched that he’s seen as the evil mastermind stroking his white cat with a piece of coarse sandpaper one of his minions found.David Warner takes a selfie with a fan•Getty ImagesThe Warner we have seen at the World Cup has been different. Gone is the brash young guy slapping Dale Steyn into the Southern Stand, he no longer uses doubled faced bats, and he’s probably not been in a Walkabout since he hit the UK.In this tournament, his Powerplay strike rate is 68, the third-slowest on any player with 50 or more runs in that phase of the innings.Warner dismissed this, after Australia’s win against Bangladesh. “I don’t mean to go out there and bat slow, I am trying to get a calculation on how many fielders I’ve hit in the first ten. It gets frustrating, you sort of middle one and it goes full pace to the fielder, and you can get off strike. I got frustrated against India, and against Afghanistan.”He was more dismissive of the notion that he’d been trying to go slow than he’s been with most of the balls in the Powerplay. The bull, the reverend, Davey, whatever you call him, looked timid. Some of these changes happened before the sandpaper incident. He’s developed into an incredible runner between wickets, his placement when looking for twos on the leg side is surgical, and he makes sure he bats deep now. But since he has come back into the Australia team, there has been a timidity, a lack of certainty.Against Afghanistan, some said he looked like he hit the fielders a lot. But he had a bowler with a seven-two field bowl two straight maidens at him. The West Indies brought out an odd off-side shot that found point. With Australia chasing India’s 352, he struck at only 66, and scored 16 off 34 balls from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah. When he made his hundred against Pakistan, it was slower than a run a ball, and, despite coming on a postage-stamp ground, contained only one six. And his innings against Sri Lanka finished with a strike rate of 54, and from Australia’s opening partnership of 80, he made 26.It didn’t seem to matter that Warner had won two Man-of-the-Match awards; everyone was asking what had happened to Warner. On his elbow was the kind of device your auntie uses to further her amateur tennis career into her 60s. There’s also talk of his shoulder. From the Australian camp came whispers of mixed messages, and even advice taken too literally. Some said it’s as if Warner’s been told to bat through the innings, and he was doing it as diligently as a prepper who believes in the apocalypse.David Warner has survived the hell out of the World Cup Powerplays.David Warner cuts a loose ball•AP PhotoAfter 18 balls today, he had ten runs, and sliced another nothing shot towards point, where Sabbir Rahman dropped him. There were also inside-edges close to the stumps. It was the same start we’ve seen from Warner repeatedly in the tournament. Then Finch told him to “bat deep and bat time”.Warner took the advice and kept working the ball around the field. Then Shakib Al Hasan came on. He’s probably the only thing saving this World Cup from the unscheduled monsoon season. Warner showed him the respect his bowling’s deserved. And then Warner got down on one knee and hit him 94 metres over deep midwicket. Michael Slater on commentary said, “That’s the Warner we know.” We knew once.At times he was almost the player Slater lusted over, backing away and trying to flat-bat over mid-off. The muscle shots of his early career. There was the dominant straight drive that cleared the boundary by a distance. He took on a Mustafizur Rahman’s short ball for a hooked six. A knee-high full toss was helped over the short fence. There were plenty of boundaries, and he had a strike rate of better than a run a ball against all but one Bangladesh bowler. But most of these runs and boundaries came late. He was 77 off 96; he batted deep, as he was asked to do. And then he made 89 off his last 51 balls. The most dramatic of his shots may have come when Shakib was so out of ideas that he tried a wristspinning delivery, which looked like a fan had wandered onto the field to deliver. Warner saw the short, slow filthy ball early, rocked onto his back foot, and pulled it high into the stands 92 metres away. Had Warner held Shakib above his head while saying, “I was wondering what would break first, your spirit, or your body,” before dropping him on his knee, it would not have been more brutal. The hero of Bangladesh never delivered another ball. Warner made 166.

****

Warner made a joke in the press conference about how his team-mates call him “humble” now. When Warner was out, there was a similar smile on his face. He’d just got into the flow for the first time since his return, and realised he had a chance of making 200. He was unbalanced, having tried to uppercut a slow bouncer two feet above his head. The ball floated gently to the fielder; he bent over at the waist. It wasn’t the Warner of old; it’s not just his nickname that changed. At the change of innings, he said, “I felt a little bit bogged down there and again frustrated. I managed to hang in there and build a good partnership with Finchy and Uzi [Usman Khawaja] as well. When you’re deep into your innings you’re a bit fatigued. I was just trying to give our fast bowlers as many runs as possible to come out and start well.”He also said, “We’re just trying to make up for that year.”He was talking about the runs he’s not made. From wheelhouse to doghouse, and back again.

Arsenal leading race to sign 21 y/o La Liga star with "enormous potential"

Arsenal are now preparing a bid for a midfielder who has “enormous potential”, and they believe he would be a perfect fit for Mikel Arteta’s system, according to a report.

Gunners pursuing a midfielder

Arteta will undoubtedly be very pleased with Declan Rice’s performances recently, with the Englishman scoring two remarkable free-kicks to put the Gunners in a very strong position to reach the semi-final of the Champions League.

However, the manager is keen to strengthen his midfield even further this summer, with the Spaniard and new sporting director Andrea Berta looking to bring in a partner for Rice, and Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi remains one of the key targets.

The north Londoners are set to trigger Zubimendi’s £51m release clause, having already reached an agreement on personal terms, but there is set to be stiff competition for the midfielder’s signature, with Real Madrid also keen.

The Real Sociedad maestro is not the only La Liga midfielder on the shortlist, however, with a new report from Spain revealing Arsenal are now leading the race for Valencia’s Javi Guerra, who has emerged as a key player for the Spanish side this season.

Guerra’s performances have attracted the attention of some of Europe’s top clubs, but the Gunners are currently in the driving seat, and they are now preparing to make a considerable offer for his services.

Valencia's JaviGuerrain action with Atletico Madrid's Samuel Lino

Having closely followed the maestro’s performances, the north Londoners are convinced he would be a perfect fit for Arteta’s system, but it could be tricky to get a deal over the line.

Valencia are reluctant to sanction the midfielder’s departure, given his emergence as an important player, but there is an awareness it will be difficult to keep hold of him, amid widespread interest in his signature.

"Explosive" Guerra could has "enormous potential"

The youngster has established himself as a key player for Valencia this season, making 30 appearances in La Liga, during which time he has picked up two goals and three assists, and there are signs he could get even better.

Valencia director Miguel Angel Corona clearly believes the central midfielder is a future star, saying: “We are fully aware that we have a player with enormous potential for the future and the ability to perform at a good level now.”

Freelance scout Ben Mattinson has also given an overview of the Valencia star’s abilities, while praising him for a solid display against Celta Vigo earlier this season.

Guerra could be an excellent addition for Arsenal in midfield, so it is exciting news they could soon formalise their interest by making a huge bid.

'No doubt there will be frustration' – Lyon after Australia collapse against Phillips

Carey’s form a cause for concern for the visitors as his batting average slips under 30

Alex Malcolm02-Mar-20241:18

Lyon: ‘Phillips has been talking to me nearly every morning about spin bowling’

The last time Nathan Lyon top-scored in a Test innings Australia was bowled out for 47 and lost the match.Lyon said he would not have any cheeky words with Australia’s batters after top-scoring with 41 as the visitors collapsed for 164 at the Basin Reserve and bring New Zealand back into the game from a vulnerable position.”No. That’s the second time I’ve done it in my career,” Lyon said. “And let’s hope it’s the last.”But there is a case to be made that some soul-searching should be done among Australia’s batting group. It is not the style of this team to have stern words with each other, or even introspect. They are not the anti-negativity evangelists that England’s Bazballers are, but they are relatively pragmatic about their failures.Lyon said that some of the batters would be disappointed with their dismissals in the second innings as Glenn Phillips, with a total of 11 Test scalps and 51 first-class scalps from 53 matches prior to this game, took five of Australia’s top seven to become the first New Zealand spinner to take a five-wicket haul at home in 16 years.”I dare say so,” Lyon said. “But I’ll never criticise our batters the way they go about it because they’ve been exceptional for a number of years now. But then you’ve got to give credit to the bowlers and this is my big thing. Bowlers are actually there to bowl good balls. And it’s not always the batters’ fault getting out and bowlers are allowed to come up with plans and execute and take wickets. No doubt there will be some frustration in there.”Glenn Phillips prised out Travis Head to start a collapse•AFP/Getty ImagesPhillips did bowl some good balls. The one to remove Cameron Green was a beauty. But his four other scalps, while well-planned and well-executed, required Australia’s batters to get sucked into the obvious traps that were laid out.And one after the other, Usman Khawaja, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey did just that. The first three have plenty of credits in the bank. But Carey is a cause for concern. His form with the bat is more alarming than the raw numbers. His Test batting average has slipped under 30 but it is the manner of his dismissals and the lack of a clear method to his batting that would be concerning Australia’s selectors the most.It was the second time in the match that he holed out to cover, and it was made worse that he nearly holed out twice before his dismissal to the two catching covers in place. He had scored half-centuries in his most recent first-class match for South Australia and in his last Test for Australia. But even those two innings ended in brainless fashion. Against Queensland, having cruised to 90, he premeditated to lap scoop Mark Steketee from way wide of the off stump and was caught behind.Nathan Lyon picked up the wickets of Tom Latham and Kane Williamson before stumps•Getty ImagesIn his last Test, after making an excellent momentum-shifting 65, he holed out to deep square leg, falling straight into a clear trap that was set for him.It is not the first time Australia’s thoughtless batting has left them vulnerable this summer. They remain in a strong position but much rests on the shoulders of Lyon and the bowlers.”If we do our job and put pressure on the guys for long periods of time, I’m confident that the bowlers in that change room will create more than seven chances,” Lyon said.He was a threat again in the evening session, picking up Tom Latham and Kane Williamson. He revealed that he felt like he had found a vulnerability in Williamson’s game by getting him caught at leg slip but did not elaborate on exactly what it was.”My biggest weapon and it’s no secret is my bounce all around the world,” Lyon said. “So I’ll continue to try and put some over spin on the ball and try and get the bounce and try and hit the stickers on the bat and challenge the guys’ defence on the crease. I’ve got a fair understanding of what their plan is going to be. So it’s a good opportunity for me tonight to reset some goals and reset some plans and we’ll go from there.”

The ex-Spain international returned to his boyhood club in 2023, with the lowest possible salary being agreed as he endeavoured to help them clamber back into La Liga. After 25 years outside of the top-flight, Oviedo are one step away from fulfilling that dream.

That is thanks to Cazorla, who stepped off the bench to make a decisive contribution in the second leg of their play-off semi-final clash with Almeria. He fired in a free-kick from the edge of the box, with the ball sent fizzing into the bottom corner.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

What made that strike even more impressive is the fact Cazorla – who once endured eight operations on an ankle problem and saw gangrene pose an amputation risk – took said set-piece with his left foot.

PIF and Newcastle bid £50m+ to sign Premier League star who Shearer loves

Newcastle United have made an offer worth more than £50m to sign a new player this summer who has already received praise from club legend Alan Shearer.

Newcastle celebrate Carabao Cup win as PIF plot for summer signings

The Magpies took advantage of not having a game last weekend by celebrating their Carabao Cup triumph with a trophy parade. Ant and Dec, along with Shearer, were amongst those to join fans for an open-top bus parade which produced some brilliant moments for supporters.

Talking about the scenes, Shearer said: “The players must have absolutely loved it because they got some reception. I know they absolutely deserved it but they must have loved it because to be a part of that, on the bus with the trophy and the fans what they were giving them must have been incredible for them.

“Then to get on the stage and have another 150,000 to 200,000 cheer you on, it was just a great day. The way everyone mixed and got on, the atmosphere was brilliant.”

Away from the parade, though, Newcastle and PIF are seemingly working behind the scenes on some summer transfers for Eddie Howe’s side.

Recently, it has been claimed that Bournemouth’s Dango Ouattara is of interest and that contact has been made for the £33m+ forward. Now, it looks as if Newcastle have gone one further and made an offer for a Premier League player.

Newcastle make £50m+ offer to sign Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott

According to reports in Spain, Newcastle have made an offer to sign Harvey Elliott from Liverpool. The bid made by Newcastle is thought to be worth €60m (£50.2m), with Elliott impressing due to his ‘vision, ball-handling skills, and ability to contribute both in attack and defence’.

Harvey Elliott celebrates for Liverpool

The report then goes on to add that the offer could be hard to refuse for Liverpool, with Elliott out of contract in 2027 as things stand.

The 21-year-old has progressed through the ranks after joining the Reds from Fulham in 2019 and has gone on to make 140 appearances for Liverpool in a variety of attacking and midfield positions.

He’s also been hailed by Shearer, who said on Elliott: “He’s a real talent isn’t he, he’s brilliant. What I like about him now, he can play midfield also. We all knew he could play midfield but he’s not just okay because Salah’s playing on the on the right and he wants to come in on his left foot.

“He can play in a variety of different positions and every time he plays it really shows me that he’s good enough for this level now, it really does. As long as he can get some consistency, I think we’ve got another top player on our hands.”

Now, it looks as if a move to St James’ Park could be one to keep an eye on.

£23m Wolves star is going to swiftly become more important than Cunha

Wolverhampton Wanderers showed just what they are capable of during their 4-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.

Of course, it was just Spurs, but Vitor Pereira has a talented bunch of players at his disposal and if he could keep them ahead of next season, might a top-half finish be on the cards?

Wolverhampton Wanderers' MatheusCunhacelebrates scoring their fourth goal

One thing that Pereira will be hoping is Matheus Cunha stays at the Old Gold for their assault up the Premier League table in 2025/26.

Given the interest in him, though, that is looking fairly unlikely.

The latest on Matheus Cunha's future

The Brazilian is enjoying an excellent campaign, summed up with his goal against Spurs on Sunday.

With the Molineux side 3-2 ahead and Spurs pushing for an equaliser in the dying minutes, Cunha netted the clincher that saw the club take home all three points.

In the process of doing so, he ran over to the Wolves crowd and appeared to apologise for his actions over the weekend.

Indeed, the forward landed himself in hot water after an Instagram post, which he later deleted, ended up in him ranting at supporters.

Well, he responded in the best possible way on Sunday by letting his football do the talking. No action will be taken by the club, as confirmed by Pereira post-game at the weekend.

“I didn’t speak to Cunha about the social media post.” the Wolves boss admitted. “I let him do the talking on the pitch. He’s committed, he’s a special player. He needs the energy of love. He went to the pitch not to think of himself, but the team. I understand the fans, but he’s part of our family.”

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Overall, Cunha has scored 16 times and grabbed four assists for the club in 2024/25, so without his goal involvements, they would likely be in the relegation places, such is his importance.

When he signed a new deal, a release clause of £62.5m was inserted, and it looks like it could be activated this summer, especially with Manchester United keen on a move for him.

Matheus Cunha

This money could go a long way to securing a replacement; no doubt about that.

But, is there perhaps someone who has become more important than the former Atlético Madrid star?

Wolves star is now more important than Cunha

Should Cunha leave for big money, Jorgen Strand Larsen will be ready to slip into his shoes and take on the mantle of Wolves’ talisman.

Signed initially on a loan deal, the Norwegian made the deal permanent at a fee worth around £23m in January as certain conditions were met.

Since scoring against Southampton midway through March, Larsen has now found the back of the net in four consecutive Premier League games.

It’s safe to say he’s in the best form of his career at Molineux.

His 12 goals and three assists are just five goal involvements off Cunha’s mark. With more responsibility, he could turn into a vital player for the Old Gold next term. That’s a certainty.

He ranks second in terms of goals scored in the top flight for Wolves (12), while also ranking second for shots on target (1.1) per game and fourth for big chances created (four), behind Cunha in all these metrics.

Journalist Josh Bunting was impressed with his abilities way back at the start of the season, saying: “His movement off the ball really stands out to me, sharp on the ball.”

The previous few months have certainly proved that the club were right to secure his signature permanently, especially for a fee in the region of £23m.

If he begins next season the way he is ending the current one, Larsen will undoubtedly become the club’s most important focal point.
