How many times have brothers made ducks in the same Test?

Also: what would South Africa’s Duckworth-Lewis target have been in the 1992 World Cup semi-final?

Steven Lynch16-Oct-2018The Marsh brothers both made ducks in the second innings in Dubai. Was this a first? asked Chris Mitchell from Australia

The double zeroes of the Marshes in the first Test against Pakistan in Dubai last week was actually the eighth occasion on which a pair of brothers was dismissed for nought in the same Test innings. The first instance was in the first Test ever played in England, at The Oval in 1880, when EM and GF Grace both bagged ducks in the second innings against Australia. Their rather more famous brother, WG, sealed victory with 9 not out, after making 152 (the first Test century ever scored in England) in the first innings.Since then, this family misfortune has befallen Hanif and Wazir Mohammad (for Pakistan against England at The Oval in 1954), Dayle and Richard Hadlee (New Zealand v England at Trent Bridge in 1973), Jeff and Martin Crowe (NZ v England at The Oval in 1983), Andy and Grant Flower (Zimbabwe v Pakistan in Rawalpindi in 1993-94), Bryan and Paul Strang (Zimbabwe v South Africa in Harare in 1995-96), and Mark and Steve Waugh (Australia v Pakistan in Colombo in 2002-03).The smallest contribution by a pair of brothers in a completed Test (four innings) is two runs, by Amar Singh (0 and 1) and Ladha Ramji (1 and 0) for India against England in Mumbai in 1933-34.Which South African Test player had a son who was a leading Aussie Rules footballer? asked Kenneth McLaren from Australia

This unusual combination was provided by the Lawrence family. Godfrey “Goofy” Lawrence was a lanky seamer from Rhodesia who played five Tests for South Africa, all in the same home series against New Zealand in 1961-62. He had a successful time, taking 28 wickets at 18.28, including 8 for 53 in the second match, in Johannesburg. Unusually, Lawrence took wickets with what turned out to be the last two balls he ever bowled in Tests, a distinction I think he shares only with Gerry Hazlitt of Australia in 1912.John Reid, New Zealand’s captain in that 1961-62 series, said: “Lawrence’s tremendous height enables him to make balls lift from the pitch as they move with the swing… [He] is a true, old-time swinger of the ball… Perhaps his most deceptive ball is the one that comes back late in towards the off stump.”South Africa didn’t play very often back then, and by the time of their next series – in Australia in 1963-64 – Lawrence was out of favour. But his son did make it to Australia. Stephen Lawrence, born in South Africa in 1969, played nearly 150 Australian Rules football matches as a ruckman for Hawthorn between 1988 and 1998, winning the Grand Final with them in 1991.What would the target have been in the 1992 World Cup semi-final between England and South Africa if the Duckworth-Lewis system had been in use then? asked John Ross from Australia

That match ended in controversy when a brief rain shower removed two overs towards the end of South Africa’s innings in Sydney – they were 231 for 6 at the time, chasing 253. The competition rules for rain-shortened matches in that World Cup meant the least productive overs from the first side’s innings were discounted. England had bowled two maidens, one of which included a leg-bye, so South Africa’s target was reduced by just one run, becoming an impossible 21 off one ball (there was additional confusion because the scoreboard originally showed a target of 22 off seven balls, later amended to 22 – and then 21 – off one).As for what the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern calculation might have been, there’s an important consideration which is often overlooked: South Africa bowled their overs very slowly, and only managed 45 in the time available. These days they’d have to complete the overs and be heavily fined, but in 1992 the first innings just stopped. In a match in the 1990s where a team scored 252 in 45 overs, having started out expecting to receive 50, I think South Africa’s DL target would have been increased to 275 (this would vary in later editions of the system; the figures are revised, usually upwards, in line with scoring trends). The subsequent loss of two overs would have reduced that to 265 – so actually they would have been even further adrift. In truth, of course, they’d have known about the higher target and would presumably have batted differently.I asked Professor Steven Stern, who now administers the DLS system after the retirements of D and L, to confirm my figures, which he kindly did. He concluded: “As you rightly note South Africa were never actually chasing 275 and thus their scoring effort was not geared to achieve it. As such, it is more realistic to simply analyse the actual situation South Africa were facing: 253 from 45 overs. In this case, the new target would have been five from one ball (or a four to tie).”There’s more on the match in this Rewind column from 2011.By the Duckworth-Lewis calculation, South Africa would have been looking at a target of five runs from one ball•Getty ImagesI noticed that the record for the lowest total in women’s Twenty20 internationals is now apparently held by Mexico. How long have they had official status? asked Keith Barton from England

Mexico were bowled out for 18 by Brazil in Bogota, Colombia on August 24. Their total undercut the 25 scored only the previous day by Mozambique against Namibia, a continent away in Gaborone, Botswana. The reason for these unfamiliar countries suddenly cropping up on the record lists is a recent ICC ruling that gave all T20 matches between the women’s teams of Member countries full international status. One result of this is that in the table of the smallest totals in women’s T20Is, 20 of the 21 lowest have been set since June this year. The exception was Bangladesh’s 44 against Pakistan in Bangkok in November 2016.This ICC ruling will apply to men’s matches too from next year, so look out for some more unfamiliar names on this type of list.Australia had six lbw dismissals in the fourth innings of their recent Test against Pakistan. Was this the record? asked Anash Chishty from Saudi Arabia

Australia lost eight wickets in the final innings of the recent exciting draw in Dubai, but six of them fell to leg-before decisions. This was actually the 24th instance of six lbws in a Test innings, and the seventh in the fourth innings of a match. There have been two Test innings that contained seven lbws: by Zimbabwe against England in Chester-le-Street in 2003, and by New Zealand against Australia in Christchurch in 2004-05.The most lbws in a Test match is 20 – half the wickets to fall – in the opening encounter between West Indies and Pakistan in Providence in Guyana in May 2011.Use our feedback form or the Ask Steven Facebook page to ask your stats and trivia questions

Rodgers could land Celtic's next Maeda with move for "quality" £2.5m star

Celtic: champions of Scotland again.

On Saturday, the Hoops demolished Dundee United 5-0 at Tannadice, Nicolas Kühn and Adam Idah both bagging braces, as they secured a fourth successive Scottish Premiership title, and a 13th in only 14 seasons.

So now, even with an Old Firm to come on Sunday, Brendan Rodgers’ focus has already, somewhat, turned towards summer plans, so could he snap up a “quality” new wide-forward?

Celtic's winger target

According to a report by Bréhima Diakité of Africa Foot earlier this month, Celtic are ‘monitoring’ Ajaccio winger Moussa Soumano, with Brentford, Leicester City, Leeds United and Atalanta amongst those also interested.

Soumano is just 19-years-old, his 20th birthday is coming up this summer, and he plays for Ajaccio in Ligue 2, scoring four goals and providing two assists for L’ours this season, with the Corsica-based club down in 13th, despite being in France’s top-flight as recently as two seasons ago.

Thus, could Ajaccio be forced to sell their most-prized asset?

How Soumano compares to Celtic's current forwards

Scout Mathieu Duhamel describes Soumano as a “quality” winger, adding that he is “capable of dribbling” with both feet and is a “promising player” who “should leave Ajaccio this summer” in order to “take a step forward” in his development.

Avradeep Mukherjee of Sports Illustrated believes Soumano would be a ‘valuable’ squad member for Rodgers, considering he can play both out wide and as a centre-forward, while the original report notes that he is valued at around €3m (£2.5m).

So how does he compare to Celtic’s current forward options? Well, he’s unlikely to usurp Daizen Maeda in the depth chart, considering the Japanese forward has now scored 33 goals this season.

With four Premiership matches remaining, followed by the Scottish Cup Final against Aberdeen, Maeda is still on course to break a few records, as the table below highlights.

As shown in the table, since Henrik Larsson’s 41-goal haul in 2003/04, only Leigh Griffiths nine years ago has broken the 40-goal mark in a single Celtic season, with Maeda requiring seven goals from the final five fixtures to match this; it’s very possible.

However, Maeda aside, the other two positions in Celtic’s attack are very much up for grabs.

Kyōgo Furuhashi was sold to Stade Rennais for £10m in January, while Jota, who rejoined the club from Rennes in the winter, is set to spend the next few months on the sidelines, after suffering a knee injury against Dundee United on Saturday, joining in the post-match celebrations at Tannadice on crutches.

Jota, Celtic forward (now Al- Attihad)

Meantime, Kühn’s form has fallen off a cliff since the turn of the year, Yang Hyun-jun, who’s currently sidelined, is very hit-and-miss, while Adam Idah is also yet to establish himself as a regular starter.

Thus, these positions in Celtic’s attack are certainly up for grabs, and Soumano certainly appears to have the talent to come in and stake a claim.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Similar to Maeda, as already alluded to, Soumano is comfortable playing both as a striker and a winger, while his £2.5m valuation would be a bargain, just as the Japanese forward was, arriving from Yokohama F. Marinos for a reported £1.5m back in January 2022.

That deal has proven to be a masterstroke for those at Parkhead – perhaps this could be the next transfer coup?

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Brentford have the upper hand in the transfer negotiations as they have the option to extend the player's contract by one more year when it expires in the summer of 2026. While United remain firm favourites to secure the transfer as the Cameroonian's preferred destination is Old Trafford, the Bees could welcome a bidding war with Tottenham also in the race.

49ers now keen on signing new 23 y/o winger after Rangers scouting mission

Although their focus has been on finding a new manager, Rangers are now reportedly seriously interested in signing a European talent who they’ve already scouted ahead of the summer transfer window.

Rangers' manager shortlist

Before anything, the Gers must finally find a permanent replacement for Philippe Clement, having decided against handing Barry Ferguson the job following a brief interim spell at the end of the season. To that end, a number of candidates have unsurprisingly already emerged in the race to land the vaccant position at Ibrox.

Names such as Steven Gerrard and Davide Ancelotti have stolen the most headlines, but that hasn’t stopped the likes of Russell Martin from receiving links to the job in recent weeks. The former Southampton manager has been out of a job since being shown the door at St Mary’s and is now an outside candidate to arrive in Scotland as well as being linked with the Leicester City job.

Plenty have had their say on just who should arrive, including Rangers legend Ally McCoist. He told reporters when quizzed on Gerrard’s next move: “It’s absolutely vital that his next job is the right one, It didn’t quite work out at Villa or in Saudi Arabia. It’s similar to Frank Lampard—his move to Coventry has been crucial in getting his managerial career back on track. Steven’s in that same position. His next step needs to be spot on.”

Whether a return to Rangers is a move that would be “spot on” for Gerrard is a question that those in Scotland may just get an answer to in the coming weeks, as the 49ers ramp up their managerial hunt.

Same agent as Gerrard: Rangers want cheap deal to sign £1m int'l defender

He could arrive with the potential new manager.

ByTom Cunningham May 28, 2025

As soon as they find their next manager, of course, Rangers must turn their attention towards the summer transfer market and that’s when they could make their move to sign an attacking addition who they’ve already scouted.

Rangers seriously interested in Djurgarden winger Fallenius

According to Fotboll Direkt in Sweden, the 49ers are now seriously interested in signing Oskar Fallenius after Rangers completed their scouting mission on the 23-year-old Djurgarden winger. The Swede could be part of a much-needed list of arrivals as those at Ibrox look to turn their side back into true title contenders and bridge the gap on Celtic in the process.

A player who has featured on the European stage and scored in the Europa Conference League, Fallenius has seemingly done enough to earn the attention of Rangers ahead of the summer transfer window.

If the 49ers are looking to improve the Gers whilst maintaining their budget, then the arrival of a player who could be on the verge of bursting into his best form should be the way forward. And Fallenius would fall into that category.

The Scottish giants arguably got it all wrong last summer, but with new owners on the way they have the chance to start fresh and close the gap on Celtic for the first time since 2021. Whether that results in Fallenius’ arrival will certainly be interesting to see.

Why Rishabh Pant is perhaps India's first T20 batsman with a T20 attitude

In the IPL, he excels at the difficult task of batting in the middle order, but he has his work cut out trying to push his way back into the India set-up

Sidharth Monga19-Sep-2020Rishabh Pant runs down at Mujeeb Ur Rahman, a bowler with variations ranging from the carrom ball to the offbreak to the legbreak to the wrong’un. He thinks he has picked the legbreak and tries to go over the leg side, but it turns out to be the wrong’un, which he ends up slicing to cover. This is after he has hit the Kings XI Punjab’s then gun bowler Andrew Tye for four, six and four in the previous over, and hit the first ball of this Mujeeb over for four more. The three overs for which Pant has been in the middle have brought 33 runs, to inject some life into a Delhi Daredevils innings that was limping at 77 for 2 after ten overs. His intent and eagerness to hit out are later proved right, when the Kings XI chase down the target easily. Pant knows the Daredevils are headed to a below-par total, but gets out trying to correct that course. For 28 off 13. How has he fared? Has he failed?A big part of cricket is failure and how you deal with it. In an interview to the three years ago, Stephen Fleming, coach of a pretty successful franchise, said helping players deal with insecurity about failure was a significant part of his job: “It is very hard to convince a player that if he is going at [a strike rate of] 190 but averaging 10 and he comes in with four balls to go, [that] he is an asset. It is [about] convincing guys that they are doing their roles to maximum. If someone is batting at a run a ball for 20 balls and averaging 50 at the end of the IPL, it is not great.”ALSO READ: ‘This much I know: how to play in what situation’That is a conflict inherent in cricket: the pursuit of individual goals in a team sport. You want the team to win, but you also want to make runs to keep your place in the side. It is quite telling that as recently as 2017, a coach who had worked with some of the biggest names in T20 felt that players still rated themselves by the traditional metric of the batting average. It naturally follows that in trying to keep that average high, in trying to retain their place, batsmen run the risk of being at odds with the team’s goals. This gets all the more vexing if you don’t bat in the top three. There is no time to make up for slow starts. Your striking efficiency has to be high: there are no field restrictions in place to take your shanks and mishits over the 30-yard line and rolling into the fence. The pitch has probably slowed. It is easier for limited batsmen to be shut down, with fewer boundary options because of the spread-out fields and the fact that the opposition’s best spinners are bowling. It is no wonder everybody wants to bat in the top order, where more is expected of you but you have the time and the freedom to go about your innings. Some ordinary T20 batsmen have found their way into top-ten lists for aggregate runs or high averages simply because they have the luxury of batting in the top order. Teams have to strike a balance between the old notion of letting their best batsmen play the most deliveries and having their best batsmen bat in the most challenging phases of an innings.ALSO READ: Rishabh Pant’s wild ups and downs since 2018Batting outside the top three requires a mix of high skill and a new attitude. That’s why the likes of Andre Russell and Kieron Pollard are so highly valued as T20 players. That’s why West Indies have been such a successful international T20 side.India have struggled to manage this attitudinal shift and it has hurt them at world events. In the IPL, for example, all of their high performers bat in the top order. They are selected for India based on traditional metrics, find the top order is jam-packed, and are then forced to become middle-order batsmen at the international level. The Dinesh Karthiks of the world hardly get a run. Can you blame them, then, for worrying about their average?

****

Around the time that Fleming spoke about the need for rethinking what batting success and failure in T20 meant, Pant was finding his feet in the IPL. At the time he was in his second IPL year. Since the start of that season, no one in the IPL has scored more runs than him. The next eight batsmen on the list predominantly bat in the top three. None of them is close to his strike rate of 168 in that period. And yet, he has averaged 38. He is one of only three players to have maintained the holy-grail double of an average of 30 or more and a strike rate of 150 or above through a career of 50 innings or more. AB de Villiers just misses out making that list.ESPNcricinfo LtdPant has no apparent weakness against any kind of bowling. His average and strike rate in this three-year period against pace and spin are 39 and 177, and 42 and 157. Wristspin is the biggest weapon deployed by teams in the middle over, but he averages 56 and strikes at 160 against it. Offspin, which goes away from him, goes at 38 and 151. Left-arm pace, another point of difference that every team seeks, draws an average of 36 and a strike rate of 201. Hyderabad is the only IPL venue and the Kings XI Punjab the only team to have kept him under a strike rate of 150.

Among the big-name international bowlers, only Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav can claim to have the wood over him. Rashid Khan, Imran Tahir, Jofra Archer and Sunil Narine have all struggled to contain him: the lowest he averages against any of these four bowlers is 32 (Tahir); his lowest strike rate against them is 146 (Khan). When setting targets, which is considered to be more difficult, his average and strike rate are 44 and 175; when chasing, they are 37 and 161.There are many reasons why Pant is rated so highly. When they should have been playing the IPL this Indian summer, the players were forced to sit at home because of the pandemic. Some of them spent time chatting to each other on video on Instagram. Apropos of nothing, some of these conversations invariably turn to Pant.Mohammed Shami tells Irfan Pathan, full of awe, that the day Pant gets confidence at international level, he will “explode”. “The way the ball travels off his bat…”ALSO READ: The Rishabh Pant question: In or out of India’s World Cup squad?Rashid Khan tells Yuzvendra Chahal of the Under-19 days when Pant hit an Afghanistan left-arm spinner for three consecutive sixes and then got dropped off the fourth ball. The bowler, Khan says, went down on his haunches, held his head in his hands and screamed, to the amusement of his team-mates, “Who will save us from him now?” That day Pant scored 118 off 98; the rest of Indian team managed 148, Afghanistan were bowled out for 162.Chahal’s response to that anecdote expresses the same Shami-like awe: “If your bowling is not up to a certain level, he changes your level.” Khan says it is difficult to bowl to him because you can’t shut him off; he hits every shot in every area. No surprise that Khan would rather bowl to Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma. In another chat, Suresh Raina tells Chahal that watching Pant gives you that rare pure joy you got from watching Yuvraj Singh or Virender Sehwag or Sachin Tendulkar at their best, dominating bowlers.

****

The ball travels faster off his bat, he has all the shots, he dominates bowlers – all that is there, but what really sets Pant apart is his willingness to bat at a T20 tempo. He is arguably a first in India: a T20 batsman with a T20 attitude. He doesn’t want to build long innings at the expense of making the most of those 20 overs. It is all the more incredible that he doesn’t despite having grown up playing as an opener who liked to get a sighter before he began hitting out. He opened for India in U-19 cricket, and even for Delhi in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.Pant has unlearnt that, and starts quickly. He attempts, and hits, a lot of boundaries. Only two batsmen – Narine, a powerplay pinch-hitter, and Russell, the GOAT hitter – take fewer balls to hit a boundary on average than Pant’s 4.14. Outside the powerplay, only Russell does better.Pant is fifth on the list of batsmen with the highest strike rates over their first ten balls. The ones ahead of him are Narine and Russell again, followed by Hardik Pandya and Jos Buttler.

ESPNcricinfo’s Smart Stats are metrics that aim to contextualise statistics by assessing players’ performances relative to how others fared in those same conditions, the record of the opponent, and also taking into account the phase of the game. In a way, they measure the impact of the cold runs you see on the scorecard.Over the last three years, among those who have scored a total of at least 500 runs in the IPL, only Russell and Narine have a better smart strike rate than Pant’s 189, which is a 12.5% increase on his absolute strike rate. The smart strike rates of other India international batsmen over this period – KL Rahul, Kohli, Sharma among them – is lower than their absolute strike rate; Pandya is an exception. These batsmen rely on a special performance from somebody else to be able to put on a par score on the board; Pant puts in those special performances day in and day out.

He has consistently scored more runs in tougher phases of the game at a much higher strike rate than other batsmen involved in those matches, and he still has more aggregate runs than others. Only Russell and Narine, who have the licence, have gone faster than Pant. It could be argued that even Pant has the licence a Kohli or Sharma might not have, but no other No. 4 or 5 matches up to him either. This is the result of a liberated mind that has reassessed the definitions of success and failure, and of a set of skills that enables him to achieve some sort of consistency in the most difficult phase of the game. And yet, in international cricket, the same liberated mind seems muddled. There sometimes are periods of quiet, and then a big shot to bring about his downfall. It is as though Pant is trying to be someone he isn’t, and then gets out trying to rediscover himself. As a result, Pant is established only in half a format: Tests outside Asia. After being in and out of India’s limited-overs teams, he has lost his place to KL Rahul, which must be frustrating now that MS Dhoni has finally announced his international retirement. Rahul has shown tremendous skill batting in the difficult middle order in ODIs, but it need not be Pant Rahul. Imagine both Pant with his potential unlocked and Rahul in current form in India’s middle order. In a way, Pant did not lose out to Rahul in New Zealand early this year, but variously to Kedar Jadhav, Manish Pandey and Shivam Dube. As man managers, India’s selectors, captain and coaches should be concerned they have not been able to properly use someone who, for three years now, has arguably been among the best three or four middle-order batsmen in franchise cricket, despite playing in only one league. He also is the left-hand batsman that India so badly need in their limited-overs middle orders. That is the comfort zone, it is argued, that Pant performs in. He has not found his comfort zone in international cricket, where he doesn’t get 14 straight games and has to repeatedly prove himself all over again to the team management. Nor is there a way he can know his role in this India set-up with the clarity he has at the Capitals. One day he is dropped from the World Cup, another he is batting in the third over of a World Cup semi-final.Pant does not have the comfort of having his role in international cricket as well defined as it is for him at the Delhi Capitals•BCCIIt is an environment so competitive that the captain tells young players they will get “five chances to prove themselves”. The coach openly talks of how Pant has let the team down with his shot selection.Gautam Gambhir, an acclaimed IPL and occasional India captain, has no sympathy for Pant. He tells ESPNcricinfo that at the IPL, unlike at international levels, you can target lesser bowlers, and nor do you have to deal with scrutiny or the possibility of being dropped. At international level, echoing the team management’s sentiment, Gambhir says Pant simply has to finish games.”International cricket is not about grooming a player, it is about delivering,” he says. “If you have to groom a player, there is first-class cricket. There are so many other people in the queue waiting to make a comeback or a debut. So you have got to decide how many games you want to give a certain player. You can’t keep playing international cricket on talent.”To be fair to the team management, Pant got 24 straight T20I matches for India over 14 months starting November 2018. His median entry point is the 11th over, which Mohammad Kaif and Ricky Ponting of the Capitals think is the ideal time for him to start his innings. Yet he has averaged 20 at a strike rate of 125 in these 21 innings.DC v KXIP live scores September 20 2020So Pant finds himself out of the India set-up with three World Cups in the next three years. In these uncertain times, nobody can count on being able to play any international cricket to make a case for selection, which makes the IPL more important. And Rahul is in no mind of giving up the big gloves – though he has Nicholas Pooran, arguably a better wicketkeeper, in his side.Pant is up against it, and also out of his comfort zone slightly when it comes to the conditions. The grammar of T20 cricket in the UAE is slightly different than in India. In the IPL overall, a boundary is hit every 5.63 balls; it is once in eight balls in Abu Dhabi in T20s since the start of 2017, once in seven in Dubai, and six in Sharjah. The average scoring rates are accordingly lower.Pant will have to be even more efficient with his hitting if he wants to continue playing a role similar to the one he has played in the last three editions of the IPL. If he changes his approach a little to reflect the conditions, he will be doing what India have been asking him to do: bat according to the conditions. Either way, if he succeeds for a fourth IPL in a row, he will have answered a lot of questions his patchy international career has raised.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Jota's death has led to widespread tributes from across the footballing world, including the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool, and his former clubs Wolves and Porto. The forward was a sparkling, twinkle-toed forward for Liverpool, and played a key role in their recent success following his arrival in 2020.

  • WHAT BRONZE SAID

Bronze told reporters: “Yeah it definitely shocked all the squad when we woke up this morning and the news started to spread. Obviously we have a lot of Liverpool fans in our team and football fans, but for people in general, everyone is just thinking of them – him and his brother.

“They were so young as well. We have seen all the messages on social media and stuff so you can tell what a great guy he has been. It’s just really sad and we were shocked by the news, really.”

She added: “We’ll be watching the games tonight and Portugal play their first game against Spain and I know there will be a minute’s silence held before that game. I think everyone in an England shirt and everyone in the tournament will be supporting the Portuguese team because they will be a lot closer to this than we are.

“It is just a really sad moment for everyone involved in football, knowing what a great guy he is and what an amazing year he’s had – not just in football, but he got married a few weeks ago and he’s got some little kids. It’s just so sad.”

Fulham identify young £5m coach as exciting option to replace Marco Silva

Fulham have now identified a £5 million manager who is destined for “big things” as a candidate to replace Marco Silva should he leave, according to a recent report.

Latest on Marco Silva's future at Fulham

It has been another impressive campaign for the Cottagers in the Premier League, as they have a really good chance of finishing in the top 10 and potentially even sealing a place in a European competition for next season.

Fulham now have their eye on another defender who could be signed instead of Kyle Walker-Peters.

Given how well Fulham have done ever since Silva arrived at Craven Cottage, it may not come as a surprise to supporters to see him linked with a new job. The future of Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou is very much up in the air, as reports have suggested that the Australian could still be sacked even if Spurs win the Europa League. Silva is said to have an £8 million release clause in his Fulham contract that expires in 2026, and is now a frontrunner to replace Postecoglou.

But it is not just Spurs who are chasing Silva; in fact, the reason he could leave Craven Cottage is for a move to Saudi Arabia. It’s been reported that Al Hilal have set their sights on Silva as they look for a new manager before the Club World Cup starts in June, and there are even claims that Silva has agreed to leave Fulham and make the move to the Saudi Pro League.

Fulham eyeing Danny Rohl

The Cottagers are wasting no time in looking at candidates to replace the former Everton manager. According to Sky Sports German reporter Philipp Hinze, Fulham are interested in appointing Danny Rohl as manager should Silva leave Craven Cottage.

Hinze states that it looks likely Rohl will be leaving Sheffield Wednesday after another campaign of the German keeping the Owls in England’s second tier despite financial difficulties.

Rohl does have an exit clause in his contract, and it’s been reported that it is worth £5 million. That figure doesn’t seem to have put off interested parties, as both Fulham and Crystal Palace are keeping an eye on his situation given talk of their managers possibly leaving.

However, they are not the only teams from England interested in the 36-year-old, as Leicester City and Southampton are also admirers of Rohl as they prepare for life back in the Championship. Hinze does also state that there is interest from the Bundesliga in Rohl, but as things stand, interest is ‘hotter’ from England.

Rohl, who has been dubbed as being destined for “big things” as a manager by Rob Staton, has limited experience in management, as Wednesday was his first managerial role. Should Fulham decide he is the man to replace Silva it would be a gamble, given he has never managed in the Premier League.

Not just Spence: Ange must now axe "ridiculous" Spurs flop

da betobet: Tonight is set to be the the biggest nigh in Tottenham Hotspur’s season, if not the biggest this decade.

da apostebet: Ange Postecoglou and his side have the chance to make amends for their horrendous Premier League campaign and write their names into the history books by winning the Europa League tonight.

However, to do that, the North Londoners have to get past Reuben Amorim’s equally desperate Manchester United.

So, to ensure this team have the best chance of winning the club’s first piece of major silverware since 2008, Postecoglou must make some changes to the team who lost on Friday night, starting with Djed Spence.

Why Spence should be dropped

So the first thing to say is that throughout the season, Spence has probably been one of the few players who has increased his reputation.

His impressive blend of attacking and defensive abilities made him one of the team’s most effective players in the months after Christmas.

However, while the former Middlesbrough gem has started the last ten league games for the club, the team have been seriously poor in those matches.

Chalkboard

For example, they’ve won only one, drawn two and lost the other seven, with the games away to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Liverpool and Aston Villa being particularly underwhelming.

Moreover, while he wasn’t the worst offender at Villa Park, the 24-year-old was underwhelming at best, with the Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick writing that it was another display demonstrating he’s ‘lost his mojo in the past month.’

So, with Postecoglou needing everyone to be at their very best tonight, he should take the Englishman out of the team and bring in Pedro Porro, who has shown his value in the last few European games.

For example, the “titanic” right-back, as dubbed by The Athletic’s former Spurs correspondent Charlie Eccleshare, scored a goal in the first leg of the quarter-final, picked up an assist in the first leg of the semi-final and then scored another goal in the second leg as well.

In all, while Spence is a talented player, he should be dropped for tonight’s game, as should several other players.

The other Spurs star who should be axed

Now, while there are several players you could make a case for dropping from Friday’s lineup for tonight, the most obvious one is Sergio Reguilon.

The 28-year-old left-back made just his second start and sixth appearance of the season against Aston Villa, and while he wasn’t utterly terrible, he didn’t do anything to suggest he should remain in the team.

For example, in 74 minutes of actions, the “ridiculous” full-back, as dubbed by Gary Neville, amassed a combined expected goal and assists figure of just 0.05, was dribbled past twice, lost 75% of his ground duels, lost the ball 13 times, completed just 17 passes, misplaced all seven of his long balls, and failed in 100% of his dribbles.

In short, it wasn’t a great showing from the former Real Madrid ace, and with tonight’s game being so important, he simply has to be dropped from the team.

Moreover, much like Porro on the right, the manager has made Destiny Udogie his go-to left-back in the Europa League in recent games, and it’s been a decision that’s paid off.

Tottenham full-back Destiny Udogie.

The team conceded just one goal in their last four games, and Alasdair Gold awarded the Italian with a 9/10 match rating following their incredible 1-0 win away to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Ultimately, while Spence and Reguilon were not the worst players in the team on Friday night, neither one did anywhere near enough to break into Postecoglou’s European starting XI, and therefore, both must be dropped.
