Trescothick signs for his 25th season

Marcus Trescothick has confirmed he will play his 25th season for Somerset after signing a new one-year contract.Trescothick, 40, made his Somerset debut in 1993 and is closing in on 25,000 first-class runs. Earlier this season he equalled Harold Gimblett’s record of 49 centuries for the county. This summer he has scored 978 at 54.33 in the County Championship.”I have made no secret of my desire to carry on playing for Somerset for as long as I can,” Trescothick said. “I’m really enjoying my cricket at the moment and I still have the hunger to succeed. I am delighted that I will be a part of this club for another year.”It’s a really exciting time for the County at the moment with the talent that we have coming through and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next 12 months.”Matthew Maynard, Somerset’s director of cricket, said: “Marcus still has so much to offer, both on and off the field. The runs he scores, the experience he brings and the knowledge that he passes on to the younger players make him a vital member of this squad.”

Complicated calls abound for Australia selectors

There are plenty of difficult decisions for Australia’s selectors in naming their squad for the Adelaide Test

Underperforming batsmen and an untimely calf flare-up to Steve O’Keefe have complicated matters further for Australia’s interim selection panel on the eve of an especially tense squad announcement for the Adelaide Test. The acting chairman of selectors, Trevor Hohns, is expected to name a 13-man squad for the day/night match on Sunday afternoon, underlining the uncertainty surrounding Australian cricket on the back of five consecutive defeats, and two in a row at home for the first time since the fateful Ashes summer of 2010-11.While the youthful trio of Peter Handscomb, Matt Renshaw and Travis Dean all put their names in lights with centuries, Joe Burns and Callum Ferguson completed double failures in the Sheffield Shield match between Queensland and South Australia at the Gabba to slip further towards the precipice.Of equal concern for the panel is the fact that O’Keefe is believed to have suffered a flaring of an ongoing calf problem on day three of the New South Wales v Victoria encounter at the SCG. He had been favoured to return to the Test XI in place of the incumbent Nathan Lyon, who has struck a horrid wicket drought at the worst possible time.O’Keefe’s injury prognosis may also have a knock-on effect for the wicketkeepers Peter Nevill and Matthew Wade. While the Australians are eager for the lower-order heft that Wade could provide, his inferior glovework, particularly to Lyon, may yet play in Nevill’s favour. A third spin option, Jon Holland, has bowled well for Victoria at the SCG.Another name, not seen in lights for some time, is that of Sam Whiteman, the Western Australia wicketkeeper. A half-century and century against Tasmania at the WACA Ground met yet cause his name, too, to be discussed in the stumpers’ stakes. The elegant New South Wales left-hander Kurtis Patterson did his chances no harm with a well-constructed 55 for his state on Saturday. Patterson and Handscomb would likely slot into the places vacated by Ferguson and the concussed Adam Voges.Renshaw and Dean, two players not considered particularly fashionable in terms of physique or method, both place a high premium on batting time, a quality badly missing in Australia’s recent defeats. Another possible choice, though less likely, is Victoria’s Marcus Harris, who moved from Western Australia at the start of the season to good effect – only Handscomb is ahead of him on the national aggregates.Among the pace bowlers to support Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, the South Australia pair of Chadd Sayers and Daniel Worrall are in the selectors’ thoughts, as is Jackson Bird. Like his fellow Redback Ferguson, Joe Mennie may yet find himself on the outer after only one Test – a further measure of how much things have changed in the course of a single fractious week.Possible squad Steven Smith (capt), Matt Renshaw, David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Kurtis Patterson, Peter Handscomb, Matthew Wade (wk), Steve O’Keefe, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Jackson Bird, Daniel Worrall/Chadd Sayers.

Worcestershire revel in record run chase

Worcestershire pulled off a record run chase in a home Championship fixture to bring last-evening delight and New Road and leave Northants looking on in disbelief

ECB Reporters Network26-Aug-2016
ScorecardJoe Clarke’s reputation was enhanced by a record run chase•Getty ImagesWorcestershire kept alive their faint hopes of winning promotion in the Specsavers County Championship when beating Northamptonshire by two wickets after declarations by both teams at New Road.Set to make 401, they had one of the available 80 overs to spare on completing their highest successful run chase in a home fixture after centuries by Daryl Mitchell – who made 107 not and 103 in the match – and Joe Clarke (125).Both batsmen were out in a burst of three wickets in five deliveries by Ben Sanderson but Ross Whiteley dipped into his one-day repertoire with four sixes in a 30-ball 45 and Ben Cox made 34 in their stand of 78 in nine overs. The game swayed again with two wickets in three balls but Joe Leach got his side over the line from the last delivery of the 79th over. The vice-captain reached an unbeaten 33 with a match-winning six off Sanderson, restoring confidence ahead of a must-win game against leaders Essex at Chelmsford, starting next Wednesday.Rhodes salutes Mitchell

Worcestershire’s director of cricket, Steve Rhodes, saluted Daryl Mitchell for a “special” achievement in scoring two hundreds in the match to pass 10,000 first-class runs and set up an impressive win against the odds against Northants.
Rhodes said: “This club has got a wonderful history of terrific batsman and Daryl will look back on today and on this achievement and be very proud.
It’s been a tough old season for him. His run tally was down on what he would have wanted and for him score so well in this game is absolutely brilliant. Hopefully he’ll crack on and score a lot more.”

After a rain-shortened third day, a formula was devised to prevent the game from spluttering into a dead-end, although Alex Wakely may have had some reservations about exposing Northants’ weakened attack to so much bowling on a hot day.In the morning Worcestershire declared their first innings 350 behind at 201 for three and Northamptonshire halted their second innings at 50 for one. With the calculations done, the home side made a sticky start. In five overs from Rory Kleinveldt, Brett D’Oliveira was caught low down by wicketkeeper David Murphy and Tom Fell, after a couple of imposing cover drives, shouldered arms when bowled for 22.With the score 48 for two, the equation at lunchtime was 353 from 65 overs but Mitchell and Clarke batted through the afternoon, increasing the tempo as the partnership developed, and at tea the requirement was down to 202 from 35 overs. In the final session, Clarke was first to a hundred, his fourth of the season in the championship and fifth in first-class games, after hitting 16 fours from 129 balls. In the process he reached 1,000 runs in a season for the first time.Mitchell, having earlier passed 10,000 first-class in his career, then completed two centuries in a match for the third time in the championship. In his understated way, he got to the milestone with only nine fours from 160 deliveries.Their untroubled progress in putting on 232 trimmed the requirement to 133 at around six runs an over but the pressure built up with Sanderson’s intervention. From the last ball of the 57th over, Mitchell danced forward but succeeded only in slicing a catch to substitute Graeme White at point and from the first of the 59th over George Rhodes clipped a low chance to Wakely at mid-wicket.What Worcestershire could not afford was to lose Clarke as well but the worst happened when he tried to turn a ball on the leg-side but missed and was given out lbw.Northants stuck to their task all the way and were rewarded when Chad Barrett yorked Whiteley, Cox chipped Rob Keogh to mid-on and Ed Barnard gave Sanderson a fourth success with a catch behind.

Bresnan in third elbow operation in search for old nip

Tim Bresnan, whose valiant batting narrowly failed to bring Yorkshire a third Championship title, has undergone a third elbow operation to try to restore some of the nip that made him an England allrounder

David Hopps22-Oct-2016Tim Bresnan, whose valiant batting narrowly failed to bring Yorkshire a hat-trick of County Championship titles, has undergone a third elbow operation to try to restore some of the nip that made him an England allrounder. After several seasons of managing the elbow injury that has afflicted him since 2011, Bresnan had a further operation on Monday to clean out the joint, bringing him hope that he can “get some of the old firepower back.”Bresnan set greater store by his batting in 2016 as his bowling standards slipped a little, his efforts culminating in his unbeaten 142 against the eventual champions Middlesex at Lord’s which kept Yorkshire’s challenge alive until deep into the final day.Bresnan averaged more than 48 in the Championship, more than any other regular Yorkshire batsman – outdone only by irregular contributors Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and the short-term overseas signing Jake Lehmann.”The surgery went really well and the post-op signs have been very positive,” Bresnan told Yorkshire’s website. “The surgeon has said that it wasn’t as bad as they thought it might be. They just removed a few spurs and bumps.”It should give me a better range and reduce the pain that I have had, which hopefully will help me to get some of my old firepower back. It’s feeling pretty good already and it’s just a case of easing back into my gym work over the coming weeks. I wouldn’t normally be bowling at this stage of the year so it’s worked alright.”Yorkshire’s physio Kunwar Bansil said: “Tim has had problems with his right elbow dating back to 2011. We have managed these problems over the past few seasons but there is now a window of opportunity following the end of the 2016 season to improve the symptoms. He has had key-hole surgery to clean out the joint and smooth off any rough edges.”It should result in an increased elbow extension range making him feel more comfortable when bowling. We are now five days post-op and the initial signs are really good. We envisage that he will be fully fit in a couple of months but there are no real time constraints due to the time of the year.”Bresnan first had an elbow operation late in 2011 to remove a bone fragment. He regained his England place, but his bowling returns supported the notion that his effectiveness with the ball had been somewhat diminished.Another operation followed before the 2013 season to remove extra bone and scar tissue, causing him to miss England’s tour of New Zealand, and though he returned to play in the back-to-back Ashes his Test career ended in Australia later that year.Flashback to Tim Bresnan’s Lord’s heroics•Getty Images

"Exceptional" 29-y/o Could Stay At Spurs Amidst Exit Rumours

There is a good chance that Harry Kane stays at Spurs this summer despite heavy interest from elsewhere, Fabrizio Romano has revealed.

What's the latest on Harry Kane?

The England captain has one year remaining on his contract at Spurs, and given their failure to qualify for European competition, the 29-year-old could depart in search of success elsewhere.

He is Manchester United's top target this summer, but it remains to be seen whether he will choose to leave Spurs, having become their all-time top scorer this season.

Speaking on the Here We Go Podcast, Romano claimed that Kane could stay at his club, given how difficult a deal will be to negotiate for him, and that Spurs will still try to tie him down to fresh terms.

"I think yes, I'm told that there is a chance because Daniel Levy is prepared to fight in a crazy way to keep the player, to offer him a new deal and also to show Tottenham fans after a difficult season, they can keep the player at the club," he stated.

"For sure Harry Kane is considering some options, because Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is 100% convinced that Kane is the perfect striker for his idea, but again negotiating with Daniel Levy will not be easy at all, so I don't see that as an easy one for Manchester United."

What should Kane do?

At 29 years of age, Kane is still yet to win a major trophy, and Spurs have steadily declined in performance levels since reaching the Champions League final four years ago.

With no sporting director or manager in place for next season, it seems that the Lilywhites are still a long way off challenging Manchester City at the top of the table, and if Kane wants to win silverware, it likely will not come at Spurs.

If he departs England, with Real Madrid reportedly interested, he would lose the chance to become the Premier League's all-time top scorer, as he is currently 47 goals behind Alan Shearer, but he could give himself a great chance at winning major honours.

A move to Man United could be appealing, given the progress they have made under Ten Hag, as well as the opportunity to secure the Premier League goals record, although there is less guarantee that the Red Devils could challenge at the top of the league than there would be at Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain.

If the striker, who has been described as "exceptional", values the top scoring record highly, then staying at Spurs will allow him to accomplish that goal, but extending his contract could dramatically lower his chances at winning a league title or Champions League than if he departed this summer or next.

Here's everything you need to know about Inter Miami after Lionel Messi confirmed he is joining the David Beckham-owned MLS club in July.

Regarded by many as the best player in history, Lionel Messi has revealed his intentions to join Inter Miami and compete in the Major League Soccer (MLS).

It will be South Beach, not Saudi Arabia, where Messi will showcase his talents for the rest of 2023, with the Argentine leaving life in Europe behind having achieved legendary status at Barcelona before his two-year spell at Paris Saint-Germain.

Inter Miami is one of the newer clubs to have appeared in MLS, with their first playing season having taken place just three years ago in 2020. There may be a lot of unknowns about the Herons for Messi and his legion of supporters across the globe, so we're here to help.

What competitions do Inter Miami compete in?

Inter Miami currently participate inMajor League Soccer in the United States. The league serves as the top flight for a combination of teams from the United States and Canada. There are 29 teams participating in the league divided into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Inter Miami are part of the Eastern Conference as the club is situated in Florida on the eastern coast of the USA.

The 'Herons' also participate in the U.S Open Cup, which is the national cup competition for the clubs from MLS and the second tier, the USL Championship.

Miami, as of June 8, 2023, are still in the competition having booked their place in the semi-final of the cup after a win against USL Championship side, Birmingham Legion.

In July, Messi's new club will also participate in the third edition of the Leagues Cup, an annual tournament that brings together teams from MLS and Liga MX, the top professional soccer league in Mexico. This inter-league competition is scheduled to take place from July 21 to August 19, 2023 and could well be the setting for the Argentine's highly-anticipated Miami debut.

Messi’s new club could also potentially qualify for the CONCACAF Champions Cup next season, if they win the US Open Cup. The CONCACAF Champions Cup is the continental competition between clubs in the CONCACAF region and, in MLS, the MLS Cup winners and the respective leaders of the two conferences from the previous season receive a direct berth alongside the winner of the U.S. Open Cup.

Get to know Messi's new team-mates

Inter Miami's most well-known player before the signing of Messi was his compatriot, Gonzalo Higuain. However, at the end of the 2022 season, the former Juventus and Chelsea forward decided to call time on his illustrious career.

While there have been rumours in the air about David Beckham's club also looking to target some of Messi's former team-mates, including Jordi Alba, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Angel Di Maria, it remains to be seen who will actually join the Argentine on his Miami quest.

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner will, however, join forces with Josef Martinez, who holds the record as the most decorated single-season player in MLS history by winning the League MVP, All-Star Game MVP, Golden Boot, and MLS Cup Final MVP.

He will also join fellow Argentines Franco Negri and Nicolas Stefanelli, former Newcastle full-back DeAndre Yedlin and ex-Wolves man, Leonardo Campana.

Despite his father's departure as manager, Phil Neville's son Harvey Neville is also still on Miami's books.

What trophies have Inter Miami won?

Although Inter Miami was formed as a club in 2018, they only started playing in 2020 and have failed to win a trophy in their short life so far. However, in 2022, the Herons did make an appearance in the MLS Playoffs, albeit losing in the first round against a dominant New York City FC.

As for the U.S. Open Cup, the South Florida club only reached the quarter-final once, back in 2022. However, they are currently in the semi-final of the 2023 US Open Cup, which could represent their first proper chance of silverware, with Messi leading the charge.

    What kit do they wear?

Inter Miami's brand colours since their inception have been pink and black. The colour theory has been followed by their home and away kits, with the home jersey pink in color with black accents that pop out through the contrast. Their away offering, meanwhile, follows the opposite combination, with black being the major colour with classy pink accents.

It's not yet been confirmed what number Messi will be given upon his arrival in Miami, although with the No.10 shirt vacant, it would be a huge surprise to see him take anything other than the iconic number he's worn for much of his professional career.

Liverpool Plot Swoop £35m ‘True Leader’

Liverpool are set for a transformative summer following a disappointing campaign this season and now a new update has emerged on the club's potential targets.

What's the latest on Liverpool's interest in Orkun Kokcu?

According to Football Transfers, Feyenoord captain Orkun Kocku remains high on the agenda in Liverpool's midfield rebuild this summer.

As per the report, it is claimed that Jurgen Klopp and the club's new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke will be relied upon to work on a deal to secure the signature of the talented midfielder, whilst also aiming to bring in Kephren Thuram and Manu Kone too.

Who would Kokcu replace in the Liverpool squad?

Despite being only 22 years old, the Turkish sensation has already demonstrated his clear ability to lead his team to victory with a monumental Eredivisie title win this season, which is only the second time in a century that the Dutch club have earned the accolade.

Now Liverpool could capitalise on Kokcu's winning mentality and leadership skills by bringing him to Merseyside where he could eventually replace the role of Jordan Henderson, with the Liverpool captain now 32 years old and reaching the latter stages of his career.

Over 32 league appearances, the Feyenoord skipper – hailed a "true leader" by scout Jacek Kulig – has scored eight goals, delivered two assists and created nine big chances, as well as averaging a whopping 91.8 touches, 2.8 key passes and one shot on target per game, proving he is a huge all-round presence on the pitch.

Kokcu-feyenoord-liverpool-transfer-news

According to Sofascore, Kokcu boasts strengths in play-making, high pressing and long shots which makes him the perfect versatile midfielder that would fit like a glove in Klopp's tactical philosophy.

As such, he would likely be best suited to playing in a box-to-box role for maximum impact, similar to Henderson, but providing more energy and injecting much-needed youth.

Feyenoord will reportedly command a transfer fee of just €40m (£35m) this summer which will suit the strict and tight budgets that are uncompromising in FSG's recruitment strategy, making the chances of a deal getting done even more achievable for the Merseysiders as they set out to sign multiple additions to bolster the squad.

That said, Kokcu could be an incredible signing for Liverpool if he can continue to thrive in the Premier League next season and at such a young age he could become a high-quality asset to the club for years to come.

Imrul lays down marker for opening ODI

Imrul Kayes is confident about his prospects of returning to Bangladesh’s ODI side after his century against the England tourists in their warm-up in Fatullah

Mohammad Isam04-Oct-2016Imrul Kayes said that the 121 against England in the Fatullah practice match will strengthen his case for a place in Bangladesh’s playing XI for the first ODI on Friday. He was dropped after making 37 in the first game against Afghanistan last week which, he said, made him understood what he has to do to keep his place.Imrul, a regular opener, was made to bat at No 3 against Afghanistan and though he was hitting the ball nicely, he did not last too long and subsequently lost his place. Soumya Sarkar, however, continued as Tamim Iqbal’s opening partner despite making 31 runs in that ODI series.England survive the heat

Chris Woakes, who recovered from being hit for 14 in the day’s first over to finish with 3 for 52 in England’s four-wicket win over BCB Select XI, said that it was a good win to achieve in the oppressive heat and humidity in Fatullah.
“It is something we are not used to,” Woakes said. “We have only been here for a few days. So it was a good run out, a good performance. To win out here in any conditions against any team is a good result, and to chase down over 300 on any pitch is also a good chase.”
England are likely to field the same line-up against Bangladesh in the first ODI on Friday. Liam Plunkett and Ben Stokes left the field during the BCB XI innings after cramping up, but they returned and bowled impressive late spells.”

With Bangladesh having decided that Sabbir Rahman will be their No. 3 against England, Imrul and Soumya are contesting a single opening slot. Both were sent to open in Fatullah in this practice game in what turned out to be a bat-off.”There is a lot of competition for places in the Bangladesh team,” Imrul said. “You have to do something extraordinary to stay in this team. You can’t stay if your performance is average. I played the first ODI but was left out for the next two and I felt that maybe I need to do something better, which is why this innings feels really good.”It was not an international match but the atmosphere was similar. I needed an innings like this after a long time. It is definitely a big confidence boost to score a century against a team like this.”In Fatullah, Imrul was unusually attacking during his 91-ball innings. He started off with a flurry of boundaries before seeing Soumya beaten by Chris Woakes’ pace in the fifth over. He continued the attack, and reached his hundred off just 81 balls. He has credited coach Chandika Hathurusingha, who told him to be in a frame of mind in which he is ready to play shots square of the wicket on both sides. According to Imrul, the changed mindset kept him alert to put away every bad delivery. With plenty on offer, he struck 11 fours and six sixes.”The mindset was very important. My mindset in the last few matches was to stay at the wicket. Today I was positive from the start and I connected well with the first ball. In the last two days the coach gave me some very good advice which helped.”He told me to be prepared to play the cut and pull, and then maybe take singles off good balls. Your body will always be positive and you will react quickly. I practised that in the last two days, so for that my balance, everything was positive,” he said.

Celtic Considering Bid To Land £3.5m Wonderkid

An update has emerged on Celtic and their plans to bolster their squad heading into the upcoming summer transfer window…

What's the latest on Zan Vipotnik to Celtic?

According to Football Scotland, Ange Postecoglou is considering a swoop to sign Maribor centre-forward Zan Vipotnik ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The report claims that the club are weighing up a possible bid to snap up the 21-year-old prospect, who is also being courted by Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb.

It is stated that his current club are looking for a fee in the region of £3.5m and the player's agent has confirmed that the Hoops are in the race for his signature.

Sasa Zupan told Football Scotland: "Yes, there is interest from Celtic for a summer transfer but there are a lot of clubs who want to sign Zan when the window opens."

Who is Zan Vipotnik?

He is a 21-year-old Slovenian international who currently plays for Maribor in his home country and the talented youngster could come in as a dream heir to Kyogo Furuhashi at Parkhead.

Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi.

The number 77 has caught the eye with his performances this season as the young marksman has plundered an impressive 23 goals and one assist in 38 appearances in all competitions, including 20 strikes in 30 league outings.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig previously described the hotshot as a "poacher" and listed "finishing" and "movement" as some of the strengths of his game.

His statistics for Maribor this season suggest that those comments from Kulig were accurate as the dynamo has been a consistent, prolific, goalscorer at senior level in spite of his young age.

He is seven years younger than Kyogo and could arrive in Scotland as his understudy to start with before eventually taking over from the Japan international, as the gem has many years left ahead of him to grow and develop.

In the Scottish Premiership this season, the 28-year-old scored 27 goals and provided two assists in 36 appearances and was a reliable, prolific, scorer for Postecoglou throughout the campaign.

The PFA Scotland Men's Player of the Year is the go-to man for goals at Parkhead but has been linked with Crystal Palace and would reportedly be interested in playing in the Premier League, which puts his long-term future at the club in doubt.

This means that bringing in Vipotnik could be a shrewd piece of business by the head coach, as the up-and-coming marksman's form this season indicates that the ace has the potential to replicate Kyogo's success at Celtic if he is able to translate his performances over to Scotland.

Therefore, Postecoglou could land the dream heir to the phenomenal Japanese centre-forward by winning the race to land the £3.5m Slovenian talent.
