A rare sextet

From Keyur Shah, India It seems strange that nobody else has observed this before me.

Cricinfo25-Feb-2013Keyur Shah, India
It seems strange that nobody else has observed this before me.Six of India’s current Test side are on the verge of achieving a record which has previously been achieved by very few cricketers in their career. Should Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman, Ganguly, Sehwag and Kumble play in New Zealand when India visits and manage to win a Test there, they shall have personally won a test in all 9 current Test playing countries. To put emphasis on how significant an achievement this will be, let me disclose that only two players (to the best of my knowledge) have won in all 9 Test playing countries: Inzamam-ul-haq and Waqar Younis. Ricky Ponting hasn’t won in Pakistan, but won against them in Sharjah and may be considered, but most other players of the current Australian world-conquering side have missed out in two out of Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. Now even if we consider those past players who have won in all Test playing nations in their time (with a minimum of 6 test playing nations ie after India and New Zealand were granted Test status), only those players of the great West Indies of 70’s and 80’s who won in Australia, SA, England, India and New Zealand, and retired before Sri Lanka was granted Test status make the cut (because Sri Lanka was granted Test status in 1981 and West Indies is yet to win in Sri Lanka).Hence, this will be a great achievement indeed and i will be hoping that these 6 players manage to win a test in NZ and leave a legacy of winning tests in all countries and conditions for the coming generations of cricket fans to follow.

Report: Clement target "will be a Rangers player" after recent twist

In what is proving to be a busy summer transfer window so far, Rangers are still expected to sign another of Philippe Clement's targets soon, despite earlier reports suggesting there had been a worrying twist.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers have already welcomed Oscar Cortes, Jefte, Clinton Nsiala and Connor Barron, while Liam Kelly is reportedly on his way in a hectic start to the window. That said, a flurry of arrivals should hardly come as a shock following the number of players who left on free deals at the end of their contracts. Borna Barisic, Kemar Roofe, Ryan Jack and John Lundstram were all among those to leave Ibrox at the end of the season.

Speaking for the first time after welcoming Nsiala, Director of Recruitment Nils Koppen told the club's official website: "We are excited to add a talented young player in Clinton to the squad.

“He joins as an exciting talent who we believe can develop and take his next steps under our manager, Philippe Clement, and his staff. We look forward to welcoming Clinton to Glasgow as we continue to shape the squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.”

Rangers could ditch Goldson by signing a star who was once "generational"

The Light Blues are reportedly in the race to sign the central defender this summer.

ByDan Emery Jun 19, 2024

Barron looks unlikely to be the last name through the door, however. According to Chris Jack, Yusuf Kabadayi "will be a Rangers player", despite earlier reports suggesting that Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce were interested in the Clement's target and that Besiktas had also stolen a march on the Scottish giants.

Those reports have now been rubbished by Jack, with Rangers seemingly destined to welcome their fourth signing of the summer in what is only a matter of time.

Kabadayi can replace Sima

Whilst Rangers did manage to welcome Cortes back on loan for a second consecutive season, the same can't be said for Abdallah Sima as things stand, leaving quite the hole in Clement's frontline. That's where Kabadayi should come in, however. The left-winger, who can play all across the front three, spent last season on loan at Schalke, scoring five goals.

Abdallah Sima

Now back at Bayern and unlikely to get minutes, it's the Scottish Premiership where the young German may discover his best form once and for all. At 20 years old, he's certainly got plenty of room for the improvement that Clement would undoubtedly help accelerate.

As Rangers look to finally dethrone Celtic once again in Scotland, it looks increasingly likely that they'll be aiming to do so with a youthful exuberance rather than prior experience, turning to the likes of Kabadayi, Jefte and Cortes to take Clement's project forward.

India's CT25 squad takeaways: Future focus on Gill, Siraj left to wait and watch

Also, a bucketful of allrounders with many left-hand batting options included

No Shami in Bangar’s XI for Champions Trophy

Transition can waitThere was some chatter around whether India would start their preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup right away, and pick only those senior players who can be sure of playing two years from now for next month’s England ODIs and the Champions Trophy. However, after the Champions Trophy is a more natural reset point. As of now they have complete faith in Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, but when they sit down to pick the squad for the next ODI assignment after the Champions Trophy, they will surely take into account their game, their age, their fitness, their desire vis-a-vis the 2027 World Cup.Gill, a future ODI captain? When the incumbent captain is certain to lead the side for the next few years, the identity of the vice-captain is not that significant. This, though, is a team in transition. Should, for any reason, Rohit not be part of the team going forward, the selectors seem to have a captain in mind. Shubman Gill was the vice-captain of the last ODI squad too, has been a consistent run-getter, and is most at home in ODIs out of the three formats. His continuing as vice-captain, ahead of other senior players in the Champions Trophy squad, can be seen as a stamp of approval for him as the next captain.A bit of this, a bit of thatThere seems to be a clear impetus for multi-skilled players. They are not quite genuine allrounders – as in, they can’t play based on one discipline alone – but they add depth to the batting. India have picked four of these. Unfortunately, only one of them is a seam bowler – Hardik Pandya. Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar are the three spinner-batters in the squad, which leaves room for only three out-and-out bowlers in the first XI and only three specialist fast bowlers in the 15-member squad.Mohammed Siraj did not find a place in the 15•AFP/Getty ImagesUnfortunate SirajHaving that many allrounders is sure to cause a casualty in one of the two specialist departments. Mohammed Siraj is the unfortunate one to miss out despite taking 47 wickets at 22.7 per wicket and conceding 5.41 per over since the start of 2023.According to captain Rohit and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, uncertainty around Jasprit Bumrah might have played a role. Rohit said that if Bumrah doesn’t make it, they want their fast bowler to be effective in all phases of the ODI innings. Rohit said that Siraj’s effectiveness comes down a bit if he doesn’t get the new ball.At any rate, the make-up of the squad suggests they expect conditions where they will regularly play three spinners. The question of not getting the new ball arises only if three quicks are playing. Keeping all that in mind, with Bumrah not certain to play, Rohit said they wanted Arshdeep Singh to be there for the “back end”.What is more interesting is that Harshit Rana is Bumrah’s cover in the three-ODI series against England, which precedes the Champions Trophy. That is probably because India already know what they get with Siraj. Rana is someone they want to take a look at. This is no indication that Siraj won’t be considered should Bumrah not be able to make it. Asked if the selectors had someone in mind if Bumrah didn’t make it, Agarkar said his panel was “just hoping Bumrah’s fit. We will have a chat if he’s not fit.”Domestic cricket – important or not?Sanju Samson scored a hundred in the last ODI he played while Rishabh Pant was not a regular in the last ODI series he was a part of. However, Samson was unlikely to be part of the discussions here because he was disciplined by his state association for allegedly not turning up for the one-day camp. If the national team goes ahead and ignores Samson’s absence in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, it sends a mixed signal after having just insisted on the importance of paying domestic cricket. However, there will always be exceptions. Kuldeep Yadav, who has now recovered from his sports hernia surgery, will walk back into the squad even though at various times the decision-makers keep saying injured players have to prove their match fitness in domestic cricket in order to make a comeback. Nor will they ask Bumrah to play domestic cricket if he has to play the Champions Trophy.Kuldeep Yadav is back after an injury layoff•Getty ImagesIt would be naive to think that the singularity of what Kuldeep and Bumrah do doesn’t play any part in exceptions being made for them. At the same time, circumstances are such that there is no domestic cricket on for Kuldeep’s team when he has been cleared for action. He has worked up to loads of 10-12 overs at the National Cricket Academy, where he has been recovering.Left-hand reservesIndia’s top five were in such sensational form the last time they played together that they select themselves in the first XI. However, they are all right-hand batters: Rohit, Gill, Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and Rahul. Then the only seam-bowling allrounder, Pandya, is also a right-hand batter. No surprise that the next cabs in the rank are both left-hand batters: Yashasvi Jaiswal and Pant. All three of the spin allrounders are also left-hand batters. Axar, in particular, has been used to break up the right-hand batter cluster in the past.Possible first XI: 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Shubman Gill (vice-capt), 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 KL Rahul (wk), 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Axar Patel/Washington Sundar, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Jasprit Bumrah/Arshdeep Singh

"Pressure's a funny thing" – Mickey Arthur targets unlikely Sri Lanka victory push

Coach backs legspinner Hasaranga to give Bangladesh tough time in fourth innings

Sri Lanka are still 29 runs behind Bangladesh’s first-innings total, but they think – or rather they hope – that they can still win the first Test, with one day left to play. The Pallekele surface continued to be abominably flat through large parts of day four, which Dimuth Karunaratne and Dhananjaya de Silva batted out without losing a wicket. The hosts have seven wickets in hand, though, so will likely aim to quickly establish a lead on the fifth morning before trying to skittle the opposition out.”We’re certainly thinking about winning,” said head coach Mickey Arthur after stumps on day four. “That’s how we want to play our cricket. That’s such an important culture to inculcate in a dressing room. We’re not here to make up the numbers.”I said to the guys in the West Indies [during their previous Test series] that, first of all, we want to be a team that’s hard to beat before we become a winning team, because that’s kind of the cycle. I think we are a team that’s hard to beat. We played some hard-nosed cricket in the West Indies on some very flat surfaces. We’ll show some intent tomorrow and who knows where the day goes? It is very flat, but pressure’s a funny thing. If we get ourselves enough in front and leave ourselves enough overs, who knows what could happen?”Related

Double-centurion Karunaratne and de Silva bat through wicketless day

Lahiru Kumara ruled out of Bangladesh Tests due to hamstring injury

Sri Lanka’s attack is short-staffed for their second-innings victory push, though. Seamer Lahiru Kumara has picked up a hamstring strain and is out of the series. And they have played only one specialist spinner in legspinner Wanindu Hasaranga. Playing only his fifth Test, Hasaranga has so far seemed much more suited to limited-overs bowling, than a serious wicket-taker in red-ball cricket.”There will be a burst from the fast bowlers with the new ball, but if we’re going to get close tomorrow, it’s going to be Wanindu Hasaranga that’s going to get us close,” Arthur said. “I don’t want to put too much pressure, I just think he’s such a fantastic player.”Arthur did concede, though, that Sri Lanka’s plan to defeat Bangladesh on a green, seaming surface had perhaps been ill-conceived, as those kinds of surfaces are rarely seen on the island. Sri Lanka had expected much more help for the quicks on the first two days than has been evident from this pitch.”Maybe it was a little bit naive of me in terms of strategy – this is my first Test in Pallekele – in understanding the surface. We wanted to beat Bangladesh with a bit of pace and bounce, but it’s just been extremely flat. We’re going to have to reassess that. We’re going to have to look at how we go for that second Test. We’ll have a discussion about that Test tomorrow, we’ll let this Test happen first.”

Nabi the hustler sends Netherlands spinning

There are sexier spin bowlers at this World Cup but few wilier than the Afghanistan stalwart

Osman Samiuddin03-Nov-20232:16

How impressive has Shahidi been as captain?

Pretend you’re an Afghanistan selector. You’re licking your lips at the fantabulous array of spinners you can call upon for a World Cup in the subcontinent. There’s the GOAT white-ball leggie who’s become so good now that teams consider it a win if they go at four an over against him and only cede the odd wicket; so good that eight years after his international debut, thousands of hours of video dissection later, we’re still only guessing which one’s the googly. There’s the right-arm all-sorts who has become possibly the world’s first specialist new-ball spinner, opening the bowling in 62 of the 72 ODIs he’s played, bowling in the powerplay in 69 of those. Who has taken more than three times as many wickets in the powerplay as the next most prolific spinner in that phase since his debut six years ago; whose 47 wickets are equal to the combined total number of wickets taken by that list’s top six.Related

Shahidi dedicates Afghanistan win to refugees in Pakistan

Nabi, Shahidi, Rahmat boost Afghanistan's semi-final chances with big win

Netherlands run themselves out of the World Cup

There’s an 18-year-old left-arm legspinner and that’s it. Those words the sell. And for the first time since the mid-2010s, they’ve also got a solid fast-bowling pair, one left-arm, one right-arm. All of which means they didn’t even need to pick another couple of young leggie sensations for this World Cup.All bases covered right? Yep. All good. Now pretend you’re the opposition to an Afghanistan side. Got to plan this with care. See out Rashid Khan, don’t give him so much as a sniff (say a little prayer just in case because you’ll likely need it). Mujeeb ur Rehman, be very wary because though you want to go hard in that powerplay, here’s the data dump: he’s not going to let you. He goes at four an over he takes wickets. Sure, later on you might target him but don’t be rash when you start. And Noor Ahmad is no Kuldeep Yadav or Brad Hogg but he doesn’t need to be. Remember, his kind are still rare enough so that, every now and again, they spark all kinds of malfunctioning in perfectly functioning batting orders. And Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveen-ul-Haq are both considerably better than you might think.Missing anything? Nope. All systems go.Except, hang on. Incoming.Mohammad Nabi sends his regards.Remember him? How could you forget? Part of the furniture so long he’s not the first name on the teamsheet, he is basically the letterhead. Precisely the guy oppositions might look past because, hello, right-arm zero frills. Nobody bothers doing video dissections of Mohammad Nabi because what are you trying to decipher? Whether he’s a handsome young-looking old man, or a handsome old-looking young man?

The stumping of Logan van Beek was obviously exceptional, a flighty, floaty gimme that dipped late and turned into an absolute gotcha, the kind of ball that cuts across all preferences and demographics: young, old, casual, hardcore, Bedi, Ashwin, red-ball purist, white-ball hedonist

And yet here he is at this most joyous of World Cups for Afghanistan, a better strike rate and economy than Rashid and Mujeeb and only a wicket fewer than both. Fact: other than R Ashwin, who’s only played one game, Nabi has the best economy rate for all fingerspinners at this World Cup.This latest, a Player-of-the-Match display in Afghanistan’s fourth win, was classic Nabi. Everyone was watching out for the others, the big turn, the carrom balls, the wrong ‘un, the leftie’s wrong ‘un, and in slipped Nabi behind them. Right-arm offspin? Sure, if you really want to call it that, but actual turn seems to be the least of it sometimes with Nabi.More like right-arm unsexy. Right-arm sorry-not-sorry. Right-arm scrooge. Right-arm gotcha. Right-arm hustle. Right-arm bustle. Right-arm squeeze. Right-arm tease. Right-arm raised-eyebrow. Right-arm lowbrow. Right-arm wise. Right-arm does-not-miss-a-damn-trick.Afghanistan had conceded six, nine, six, nine, six, eight and 11 in each of the seven overs before Nabi came on for the 12th. At least a boundary in each of them too, swiftly squandering the advantage Mujeeb’s first-over wicket had got them. Farooqi was not settling, Mujeeb was not settling, Netherlands were bossing it. Afghanistan got into a long on-field huddle. All eyes on Rashid, having just returned to the field, taking control of this impromptu timeout and… Nabi sent his regards.Mohammad Nabi celebrates Bas de Leede’s wicket•Associated PressTight on off, tighter on length, four dot balls in his first over, seven in his first two overs, 12 in his first three, three singles conceded, one boundary, not a single ball worth remembering, barely a single ball deserving to be hit. Nothing to see here folks, except the life being squeezed right out of the Netherlands start.By the time he got his first wicket, he’d already caused the fall of three others. Now you might think the using “caused” for run-outs here is generous and perhaps you’re right. But I prefer to think the three run-outs in his overs were his new magic trick, like a new variation. Right-arm run-outs. And if ever there was a case to be made for a run-out being the work of the bowler, then it was in Scott Edwards’ dismissal which, spiritually, was surely a stumping. In his next over, the innings’ 21st, he got Bas de Leede with what looked like an exceptionally unexceptional delivery, except that it did hang back a little longer, a little more outside off and made a point of not turning. Netherlands were 72 for 1 when Nabi came on. They were now 97 for 5.The real stumping later of Logan van Beek, by contrast, was obviously exceptional, a flighty, floaty gimme that dipped late and turned into an absolute gotcha, the kind of ball that cuts across all preferences and demographics: young, old, casual, hardcore, Bedi, Ashwin, red-ball purist, white-ball hedonist. Everybody loves The One Where The Batter Danced Out And Looked a Little Bit Silly. Un-obviously it was also exceptional, coming at the end of an over in which his speeds went up and down like an arrhythmic heartbeat, never letting either van Beek or Sybrand Engelbrecht settle.”Focusing on dot balls,” he explained later, as if it needed pointing out. “I always try to concentrate on my lines and lengths, and variations. I try to stick to my plans and use the angles. In some pitches, the variation is more, that is sometimes why I get more wickets.”Translation: look over there, at all those bright, flashy toys. That’s where the action is. Nothing to see here. Just me, quietly minding my own business and with it, Afghanistan’s too.
