Earns more than Palmer: Chelsea flop will cost them £130m unless he’s sold

Chelsea's dealings in the transfer market in recent seasons have been questionable, to say the least, splashing over £1bn on new players with the majority failing to make an impact.

The club have spent upwards of £120m on Roméo Lavia and Wesley Fofana alone, with the two players only making a combined 21 appearances since their respective moves to Stamford Bridge.

The two aforementioned names are just two examples of the poor business conducted by owner Todd Boehly since his big-money takeover of the Blues back in 2022.

However, the club also splashed a hefty fee on one other talent who had previously excelled in the Premier League but had failed to replicate his form since his move to Stamford Bridge.

His extortionate transfer fee coupled with his ludicrous weekly wages is another reason for the club to part ways with him during the off-season, with Enzo Maresca’s side able to invest any money generated in a new talent.

Raheem Sterling’s stats at Chelsea in 2023/24

During his near two-year stint at Stamford Bridge, 29-year-old Raheem Sterling has made 81 appearances for the club, scoring on 19 occasions – a substandard return given his experience in England's top flight.

The 82-cap international, who cost Chelsea £50m back in 2022, made 31 appearances in the Premier League last season, scoring eight times – a tally that is the third highest within the Chelsea squad throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

He contributed with some key goals throughout the season, helping the Blues secure a place in the Europa League next campaign, but it may not be enough for him to secure a first-team place under Maresca.

Football Insider recently reported that the club are willing to accept offers for the player during the off-season, with the Italian looking to make his own mark on his new squad ahead of the 2024/25 season.

It’s hardly a surprise that Sterling could leave Stamford Bridge this summer, especially considering the 29-year-old’s hefty weekly earnings with the Blues.

How much Raheem Sterling earns at Chelsea

According to Capology, the former Manchester City forward earns £325k-per-week – with the winger the highest-paid player in the Chelsea squad, with his wages contributing to a whopping 11% of the club's total wage bill.

The figure of £325k means Sterling is taking home £16.9m in wages every season, with the former City man on course to earn another £68m should he stay for the remaining four years on his contract.

His bonkers weekly salary sees him earn more than star players Moises Caicedo and Cole Palmer combined, with the duo earning £150k-per-week and £75k-per-week respectively.

That's quite incredible, notably in Palmer's case given his extraordinary debut campaign at the Bridge where he scored 25 times and supplied 15 assists.

With Sterling's deal set to expire in four years, the package as a whole could amount to £130m – an obscene amount of money given his lack of impact at Chelsea up to now.

Although he joined the club with real promise, the winger unfortunately hasn't hit the levels expected, with the club set to lose a lot of money on the 29-year-old this summer.

With Maresca looking to implement a new system upon his arrival in London, the club could do with selling Sterling and investing any funds in the likes of Michael Olise and Crysencio Summerville, with the duo both linked with moves to the club this summer.

Chances grabbed and missed

ESPNcricinfo reviews the performances of the India players in the Tests against West Indies

Sriram Veera11-Jul-2011Abhinav Mukund seized the opportunity
Abhinav impressed with his grit. He looks a player who is not going to dazzle your senses with his strokeplay but someone who will squeeze the most of his talent to do the job. With M Vijay’s failure, Abhinav has grabbed his chance to become the third opener. He got a start in the first Test, moved on a little further in the second and made a fifty in the third Test, showing consistent improvement.M Vijay let himself down
This was a big chance for Vijay to nail the third opener’s spot. It was a rare full series that he got but his technique against the moving ball proved iffy. He was almost a walking wicket to Ravi Rampaul and couldn’t handle the seaming pitches in the first two Tests. He showed considerable grit in the first innings of the second Test when he hung around for a couple of hours in tough conditions but couldn’t convert it. By the end of the series, he had dropped out of selectorial favour. He will look back and see this tour as a great opportunity lost.Rahul Dravid carried on
Dravid showed his class and worth in the second innings of the first Test. It was a knock from the Dravid school of batting. This was an important series for him ahead of the England tour. It was his chance to get back into touch and form considering the last he played for India was way back in January, and he did not disappoint. So did VVS Laxman
Laxman remained the crisis man for India and there was no surprise to anyone when he played that knock in the second Test. If it can be said, his defensive technique seems to have become better over the years. He used to have the itch to play at most deliveries earlier in his career but nowadays he is showing greater restraint. It is something that will serve him well in England.Virat Kohli got a reality check
It was expected by many that Kohli will grab his chance in this series and put further pressure on the likes of Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh. He hasn’t done that. The way he played the short ball in the first Test surprised many and he failed to convert his starts after that. In a chat he said he was perhaps too defensive in his mindset and had psyched himself too much about the shift to Test cricket. In that context, this series must have been a great learning and humbling experience. It can only help him.Suresh Raina impressed
This could have been the series where Raina slipped and fell. Instead, he has put himself at the top of the contenders list for the middle order. He showed impressive patience in seaming conditions, a big heart in how he played the short ball, and a hunger to succeed. England will be a sterner test but Raina showed here that he is eager to stake his Test claim.Dhoni was the usual Dhoni
Dhoni continued to be a batsman who does well in patches in Test cricket. He breaks an almost anonymous run of innings with one substantial knock and this series was no different. Just when you began to notice his lack of contributions he came up with a good effort in the final Test.Harbhajan Singh was relieved
Harbhajan couldn’t forgive himself how he missed out on taking a bunch of wickets in Jamaica and was made to wait till the third Test to reach the 400 mark. His best effort came on the fourth day of the final Test. He turned in stirring spells throughout the day and even tormented Shivnarine Chanderpaul. He was lacklustre on the final day, though, and continued to stick to the leg-stump line plan to Fidel Edwards even when it was evident that it wasn’t working. Perhaps he, like the rest of the bowlers, was too tired by then. He will look back at this series with relief that the burden of reaching the landmark is over.Ishant Sharma rediscovered himself
Ishant found his rhythm. The pitches were conducive and the West Indies batsmen didn’t offer great resistance in the first two Tests but with Ishant it was almost an inner battle. The wrist position at the release, the run-up, the rhythm and all those things that were clearly out of place in recent times were at an ideal state in this series. How he will fare against tougher opposition, only time will tell. He hit the deck, bowled with a lot of heart and with a better understanding and control over his art. The only worrying thing was he looked dead tired by the fourth day of the final Test. India will still have to preserve him and look after him even though he has made rapid strides in the fitness department.Hard luck for Munaf Patel
Unfortunately Munaf missed the first two Tests that were played on helpful tracks. He was the best seamer on view when the pitch was at its most sluggish phase on the fourth day of the third Test. Ishant seemed spent by then and Praveen Kumar was thwarted by the conditions but Munaf extracted something from the dull surface.Praveen Kumar took his chance
Praveen showed that he should have got the Test chance earlier than this. India had turned to Jaidev Unadkat before him. Praveen grabbed the chances on offer and impressed in the first two Tests with his ability to move the ball around. India might well be tempted to see how he bowls in English conditions. He could just do the job that RP Singh did so well on their previous tour of England.

James Vince quits first-class cricket to take up PSL deal

James Vince has quit first-class cricket for 2025 in a move that will enable him to play in the Pakistan Super League despite the ECB’s new policy on No-Objection Certificates (NOCs). Vince will continue to lead Hampshire’s T20 side but has stepped down as club captain after nine seasons in charge, and will play no part in their County Championship campaign this summer.Vince, 33, was retained by Karachi Kings ahead of the PSL draft on Monday. The ECB announced in November that it will only grant NOCs – the paperwork required for players to feature in overseas leagues – to white-ball specialists for tournaments that take place during the English season, with the notable exception of the IPL.The new policy, and the PCB’s decision to shift its flagship tournament into a new April-May window, left Vince with a choice between skipping the PSL – at significant financial cost – or renegotiating the final year of his Hampshire contract to become a white-ball specialist. He has chosen the latter, in a move confirmed by the club on Wednesday morning.”I love Hampshire,” Vince said. “It’s been my club and home for 16 years, so I want to be able to maintain my best to keep delivering for Hampshire in T20 cricket, and hopefully even further our success in the competition [the Blast]. I also need to understand what is best for my family, and combine that with the stage of my career I am at.”Hampshire cited Vince’s decision to relocate his family to Dubai – where he is currently playing for Gulf Giants – as a major factor in his new deal, following a series of unexplained attacks on their home in the county last year. “I am so grateful to everyone at Utilita Bowl for supporting me last year through a really tough time, and for allowing me to make this next step,” Vince said.Related

Giles White, Hampshire’s director of cricket, asked the club’s supporters to be understanding of Vince’s decision. “James has been at the heart of the club for the best part of 20 years, showing absolute commitment on and off the field as the team’s leading batter and captain,” he said.”We recognise that this announcement will be tinged with disappointment for many fans but hope everyone will join us in celebrating what he has given to our club over many years and supporting him as he fulfils his commitment to continue leading the Hawks in the 2025 Vitality Blast.”Vince is the first high-profile player to make a major career decision informed by the ECB’s new policy and even if, at 33, he was unlikely to add to his 13 Test caps, his move is significant. He has captained Hampshire since 2015 and has been the linchpin of their batting line-up, scoring 29 hundreds and averaging 41.22 across his 197 first-class matches for them.Tom Kohler-Cadmore could follow Vince’s lead•PCB

Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who was signed on a lucrative contract by Peshawar Zalmi on Monday, is likely to follow Vince’s lead and has committed to playing in the PSL. He has been speaking to Somerset and the ECB in a bid for clarity over whether he will need to renegotiate his own deal – moving to a white-ball contract – in order to be granted an NOC.Players reacted furiously when the ECB announced its new policy in November, threatening legal action, but the board has dug its heels in since. Richard Gould, the ECB’s chief executive, said last month that the policy is designed “to defend our game” and that the collective interest of English cricket “takes precedence over the priorities of an individual”.2025 will be Hampshire’s first season under new ownership, after the GMR Group – who co-own Delhi Capitals in the IPL – agreed a multi-million pound deal to buy the club from Rod Bransgrove last year. GMR are also expected to become owners of Southern Brave, the Hundred team based at Utilita Bowl, assuming they meet the ECB’s valuation.

Diante da Chapecoense, o time ainda contará com cinco desfalques do time titular.

Marnus Labuschagne working on his death batting in ODIs and legspin

Wants to “become a better option for the skipper in the middle overs” with the ball

Andrew McGlashan19-Aug-2020Marnus Labuschagne hasn’t been idling away his time since the Covid-19 enforced hiatus in cricket began, instead focusing on how he can improve on what was a spectacular 2019-2020 season. From the moment he was parachuted into the second Ashes Test at Lord’s as Steven Smith’s concussion substitute, Labuschagne barely put a foot wrong, piling up 1249 Test runs at 83.26. That included a home summer against Pakistan and New Zealand which brought four centuries, the last of which was a career-best 215 at the SCG.Shortly before sport came to a grinding halt, Labuschagne earned his first call-up to the ODI side and, unsurprisingly, tasted early success with an emotional maiden century against South Africa in front of extended family in Potchefstroom. His last innings before lockdown was another half-century against New Zealand in Sydney. It will probably be in the ODI format where he resumes action unless he earns a first call-up to the T20I side for the initial part of the England series. While he has been working on all areas of his game, it is elements of one-day cricket where he is eyeing strides, notably his legspin and being able to hit strongly late in an innings.”It doesn’t matter what the format is; you want to get better,” he told reporters in Brisbane. “There are some areas in one-day cricket where I’m continuing to develop: my bowling and making sure I get a bit more consistent, so I become a better option for the skipper in the middle overs and, with my batting at the death – I want to keep working on that. So it’s been nice to have five months to be able to work on those skills, where if I’d been playing cricket you might not have had the opportunity. It’s all about using the time wisely. Hopefully that’s the way it comes across.”Labuschagne, who under normal circumstances would have been in county cricket for Glamorgan during the English season, is the only Queensland player in the 21-man squad for the England tour. He has been able to take advantage of more favourable circumstances in the state to prepare, both from the situation of fewer Covid-19 restrictions and the warm winter climate that allows for outdoor training and practice which included an inter-squad game to the rules of the Hundred.”There have been so many areas that I’ve found I can keep working on in the nets or at home, finding cricket in different ways,” he said. “The lack of games is definitely something I’ve missed but there’s been plenty of other areas and we’ve been lucky here that we’ve been able to train outdoors on turf.”That’s what this pre-season has been about, making sure I prepare, improving those areas I needed to to take my game to the next level. I had a really good summer but you want to be better than that, I want to go one better, so making sure you are using this time wisely.”

Joe Root 'open-minded' about conditions England expect in Sri Lanka

England pulled off a 3-0 whitewash on their 2018 tour, but their captain is mindful of keeping his expectations realistic

Madushka Balasuriya12-Mar-2020The last time England rocked up on Sri Lankan shores, in late 2018, they had a settled side that had been together for the better part of four years, and were just months away from winning their first-ever World Cup title. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, couldn’t buy a win, and a number of those who played in that series would find themselves out of the eventual travelling squad for the World Cup.A year and a half on, Sri Lanka finally look to have settled on more or less their favoured starting XI, with a pleasing blend of experience and youth. In Mickey Arthur, they also have one of world cricket’s pre-eminent coaches leading the way. England are still a top-quality unit, as showcased by their recent exploits in South Africa, but they are now once again at the start of a rebuild. With the Test Championship final coming up next year and an Ashes tour of Australia in 2021-22, England captain Joe Root believes they once more have something to build towards.”I think for us building towards that Test Championship final would be a huge achievement,” Root said at the pre-series media briefing in Colombo on Wednesday. “It’s something that we’re aiming for as a team, and obviously, we’re also always judged on how well we do in The Ashes as well, so it’s a long process in making sure that we’re always trying to peak when we’re going up against Australia and travelling over there.”Long-term a big focus for us is trying to get some consistency and how we want to go about playing our cricket. Similarly with the guys that we’re going to be selecting, it’s a real opportunity for them to long-term take this team up the rankings, and hopefully play those big moments and big games that really matter.”In the build-up to their World Cup triumph, England’s tour to Sri Lanka in hindsight proved to be a signpost moment for the type of cricket that would eventually win them the trophy. Not only did they win that series in 2018, they decimated the hosts, winning series in all three formats including a 3-0 Test-series whitewash. What made the wins all the more impressive was their manner they came in, as England beat Sri Lanka at their own game. Their batsmen dominated the home spinners, while their own spinners – Jack Leach, Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid – wreaked havoc, combining for 48 wickets. This time around, only Leach remains from that vaunted trio, and while Matt Parkinson’s four-for in England’s first warm-up game would likely have strengthened his case for a starting berth in the first Test in Galle alongside Dom Bess – who picked up three in the game – they’re both relatively untested at the highest level. In terms of the batting too, there are many who haven’t played top-level cricket on subcontinental surfaces. As such, Root isn’t getting too far ahead of himself in expecting a repeat performance from 2018.”It is a different team that we’ve brought this time around,” he said. “We’re expecting the surfaces to be slightly different, and we’re quite open-minded about what to expect. But ultimately it gives an opportunity for some of the other guys to show what they’re capable of.”I think last time we came at a different time of year for starters. It was a lot wetter. And I’m sure Mickey [Arthur] and everyone have put their own stamp on things, and are playing cricket very differently.”There were very extreme conditions [in terms of the pitches] last time around as well, and I felt we found a very good way of exploiting that. It probably suited some of the guys that we had on tour, and the way they played their cricket.”I think it’s important to have an open mind coming in to this series. If we just went in and expected it to be exactly the same then we could find ourselves getting stuck, and I think it’s really important that we play what’s right in front of us, and make sure we respect the surface and the opposition. And I’m sure there are one or two guys that want to put their stamp on this team and take it forward.”Matt Parkinson has a laugh during England’s opening tour match in Sri Lanka•Getty Images

For Sri Lanka, this will be an opportunity at redemption, though with Rangana Herath retired and Akila Dananjaya suspended, their spin contingent comprising Dilruwan Perera, Lasith Embuldeniya and Lakshan Sandakan is not as strong as it once was. Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne, however, chose to draw confidence from his team’s performances against New Zealand and South Africa in recent series, where it’s been the seamers more than spinners that have been the cornerstone of their victories.”We didn’t do well in the last series [against England], and they played really well in these conditions. And compared to other countries [we’ve faced at home] they were really good at taking on our spinners. But I think Dilruwan is there, and there are a few talented young bowlers as well. And we saw against South Africa and New Zealand in recent tours that they have a really good mindset.”Sri Lanka coach Mickey Arthur meanwhile believes that the recent ODI-series win against West Indies and the Test-series win in Zimbabwe have been great learning experiences for his players, albeit in different ways.”[The performances against West Indies in the ODIs] is certainly how we want to play our cricket, and I think our selections are going to reflect that going forward,” Arthur said. “But just to go back to the Zimbabwe series, we played on incredibly flat and slow wickets, which just sort of did nothing for the game really, and the game just didn’t move at all. And it was kind of a war of attrition, you had to just wear the opposition down. But we got a lot out of that tour, because we had to focus and had to be really disciplined through those two Test matches.”We find we got a hell of a lot out of that tour which was great for us. Certainly our brand of cricket – and I think that’s the way all teams play cricket now – is you want to take the game forward. But there are times when the session or game requires that you wear the opposition down, and that was very much our focus in Zimbabwe – primarily because of the conditions.”Nailing down that brand of cricket, Arthur feels, has been helped by the settled nature of Sri Lanka’s squad which he now believes has an ideal blend of youth and experience.”I think we’re really confident. First of all you’ve got to stay up with the trends of world cricket, and then you sort of look at the brand you want to play from there, and then you find the players that fit that brand.”We have some very young players, we have some very exciting players, we’ve got some very skilled players, intermingled with a couple of experienced players – Angelo [Mathews], [Dinesh] Chandimal, Suranga Lakmal. We feel we’ve got the balance right.”The first Test begins in Galle on March 19.

Handling spinners in Hamilton 'some of the best in a long time' – Martin Guptill

The opener showered praises on the NZ batsmen for handling Jasprit Bumrah well

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Feb-20202:04

We played Bumrah, spinners very well in first ODI – Guptill

Opener Martin Guptill believes the way the New Zealand batsmen handled the Indian spinners in the first ODI in Hamilton was some of the best they have done in a long time.In their four-wicket win, New Zealand hammered Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav for a total of 148 runs from 20 overs to chase down their highest ODI total of 348. Guptill said they will have to be “little more attacking” during the second ODI in Auckland on Saturday, given the short boundaries at Eden Park.”It’s completely different conditions, isn’t it? You have to be a little bit more attacking here I guess and have the confidence that the ball probably will not spin past your edge as much. You know the odd one might as it did the other night,” Guptill said on Friday.

Guptill wants to be around for 2023 World Cup

Opener Martin Guptill has clarified that he wants to stick around for the next 50-over World Cup, to be played in India. Guptill will be nearly 36 by then but is confident that “pending body issues and form” he will be able to stay around for another three years.
“Absolutely,” he said. “Pending body issues and form and things like that, hopefully I can stick around and put enough numbers on the board to be in that squad.”
New Zealand are playing their first ODI series since losing in the World Cup final last year and will play another three in Australia next month, which Guptill wants to make the most of. “I don’t think one-day cricket is going anywhere, there’s still a World Cup to play for in three years’ time, and leading up to that there’s going to be a lot of ODI cricket. I enjoy the ODI format, so hopefully there’s plenty more to come.” Guptill has been part of the last three World Cups in which New Zealand have made it to the semi-final once and the final twice.

“I thought the way we handled the Indian spinners in Hamilton was some of the best we have done it in a long time. So we can take confidence from that going forward in the series.”Yadav’s figures of 2 for 84 were his most expensive in ODIs, and he was attacked particularly by the left-hand batsmen Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls on Wednesday. Latham struck him for 31 runs off 17 balls by using the sweep effectively, while Nicholls collected 18 runs off nine balls against the wristspinner. Nicholls and Latham weren’t as attacking against Jadeja, but Ross Taylor, who scored a century, made up for it by scoring 28 off 22 against the orthodox spinner.ALSO READ: New Zealand bounce back from sweep – with the sweepAnother threat New Zealand negated was of Jasprit Bumrah, who played a crucial role in India’s 5-0 sweep of the T20Is, by being more circumspect against him early on and not giving a single wicket in the game. Guptill said it was more about getting used to facing Bumrah than becoming “comfortable” facing him.”Don’t know [it ever gets] comfortable facing him,” he said. “But you certainly get used to him. He has got a unique action, he comes in and he is very good with his skills. I thought we played him well on the other night.ALSO READ: India must shake New Zealand off plan A to stay alive“He bowled very well with the new ball and when the time came to take boundaries off him I thought the guys in the middle did that really well and negated him and [did not allow him] to take early wickets.”Guptill also praised stand-in captain Latham for his 69 off 48 at No. 5. Returning from injury after sustaining a fractured finger during the SCG Test against Australia last month, Latham started slow by scoring only four runs off his first 14 balls before unleashing his sweeps against Yadav.”I thought Tom played brilliantly,” Guptill said. “He gave himself some time to get in and then flipped the switch when he needed to and took the pressure a little bit off Ross. It allowed Ross to settle into his own innings as well.”Then between 25 to 40 over mark, they just took the game away from India with that match-winning partnership.”Eden Park’s odd dimensions add a bit of uncertainty for the second ODI, Guptill said, where he and Nicholls would want to see through the first 10 overs to set a platform for the middle order.”This ground is different, isn’t it? You want to go out and start the way we can and stay as positive as possible. It could be 70 for no loss or it could be 40 for no loss. You just don’t know until we go out there and assess the conditions.”You want to go out there being positive. Unfortunately in the game of cricket if you lose couple of wickets early you have to rebuild. But if Henry and I can get across the 10-over mark then hopefully take it as deep as possible.”
