Bresnan in third elbow operation in search for old nip

Tim Bresnan, whose valiant batting narrowly failed to bring Yorkshire a third Championship title, has undergone a third elbow operation to try to restore some of the nip that made him an England allrounder

David Hopps22-Oct-2016Tim Bresnan, whose valiant batting narrowly failed to bring Yorkshire a hat-trick of County Championship titles, has undergone a third elbow operation to try to restore some of the nip that made him an England allrounder. After several seasons of managing the elbow injury that has afflicted him since 2011, Bresnan had a further operation on Monday to clean out the joint, bringing him hope that he can “get some of the old firepower back.”Bresnan set greater store by his batting in 2016 as his bowling standards slipped a little, his efforts culminating in his unbeaten 142 against the eventual champions Middlesex at Lord’s which kept Yorkshire’s challenge alive until deep into the final day.Bresnan averaged more than 48 in the Championship, more than any other regular Yorkshire batsman – outdone only by irregular contributors Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and the short-term overseas signing Jake Lehmann.”The surgery went really well and the post-op signs have been very positive,” Bresnan told Yorkshire’s website. “The surgeon has said that it wasn’t as bad as they thought it might be. They just removed a few spurs and bumps.”It should give me a better range and reduce the pain that I have had, which hopefully will help me to get some of my old firepower back. It’s feeling pretty good already and it’s just a case of easing back into my gym work over the coming weeks. I wouldn’t normally be bowling at this stage of the year so it’s worked alright.”Yorkshire’s physio Kunwar Bansil said: “Tim has had problems with his right elbow dating back to 2011. We have managed these problems over the past few seasons but there is now a window of opportunity following the end of the 2016 season to improve the symptoms. He has had key-hole surgery to clean out the joint and smooth off any rough edges.”It should result in an increased elbow extension range making him feel more comfortable when bowling. We are now five days post-op and the initial signs are really good. We envisage that he will be fully fit in a couple of months but there are no real time constraints due to the time of the year.”Bresnan first had an elbow operation late in 2011 to remove a bone fragment. He regained his England place, but his bowling returns supported the notion that his effectiveness with the ball had been somewhat diminished.Another operation followed before the 2013 season to remove extra bone and scar tissue, causing him to miss England’s tour of New Zealand, and though he returned to play in the back-to-back Ashes his Test career ended in Australia later that year.Flashback to Tim Bresnan’s Lord’s heroics•Getty Images

Arsenal: Arteta Eyeing Sensational Ben White Rival

Arsenal are reportedly already looking ahead to the summer transfer window as the 2022/23 campaign comes to a close later this month.

The Gunners have enjoyed an expectation-exceeding season, with a top-two finish and Champions League football confirmed, Mikel Arteta’s side can still win the Premier League title, should Manchester City drop points in their remaining fixtures.

Not many at the club would’ve predicted the success this year would bring, however a lot of room for improvement remains, with a lack of squad depth seriously tainting title hopes in north London following defensive injuries.

The absence of Takehiro Tomiyasu and particularly William Saliba left Arteta with little cover in defence and a lack of quality to fill the void the Frenchman left in central defence.

Ahead of the summer transfer window, the Gunners have been linked to a number of potential signings, with news emerging this week that another former City star could join the ranks in north London.

What’s the latest on Joao Cancelo to Arsenal?

According to 90min, Arsenal are one of the clubs monitoring Joao Cancelo’s future in the summer.

Currently on loan at Bayern Munich after making a swift exit from Pep Guardiola’s plans at the Etihad, the £250k-per-week star is 'unlikely' to be reintegrated into the Spaniard’s squad next season.

The Bundesliga champions are reportedly against paying the €70m (£61m) fee to sign the right-back on a permanent basis, according to renowned transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

90min, meanwhile, understands that Arteta is a fan of the versatile defender, who he believes would 'slot nicely' in his plans and tactical system heading into next season.

What could Joao Cancelo bring to Arsenal?

Once lauded by former City man Paul Dickov as “sensational” and being “right up there” with the best full-backs in the world, there is little doubting the quality Cancelo can produce.

After a tough year of unexpected change and being in and out of squads, the Portuguese has maintained a high level of performance among Europe’s elite, as shown by his numbers below, via FBref.

Joao Cancelo in comparison to Europe's full-backs – as per FBref.

In terms of fitting into Arsenal’s young team, the experienced full-back could challenge the similarly versatile Ben White for a spot at right-back, and fits Arteta’s plans of having an attack-minded maestro, capable of playing as an inverted full-back in central midfield – a la Oleksandr Zinchenko but on the right.

As speculated by Football Insider, the Spaniard reportedly has an idea for a central role for the English defender mapped out, potentially leaving a vacancy at right-back for a player such as Cancelo to fill.

The 28-year-old wide player has similarities to White’s game, as shown through his statistics per 90 this season, as per FBref.

White averages 1.76 tackles per 90, as well as a huge 7.18 progressive passes per 90, showing his involvement going forward and transitioning play.

Cancelo top’s the England star for both, with 2.12 tackles per 90, as well as reading the game as an attacking full-back expertly by averaging 7.20 progressive passes per 90 – placing him in the top 3% for this area among Europe’s top five leagues in his position.

There’s no denying the talent the Portuguese star has in his locker, can Mikel Arteta be the one to settle the full-back after a challenging year?

That remains to be seen, though what is clear is the fact that Cancelo can be a mighty signing for the Gunners during the off-season and one that could either rival White or aid their defensive frailty.

Burnley plotting ‘audacious’ Raphael Guerreiro move

Burnley could reportedly make an ‘audacious’ move to sign Borussia Dortmund star Raphael Guerreiro this summer, despite their current transfer embargo.

The Lowdown: Clarets charged…

The Championship high-flyers were placed under a surprise embargo after failing to submit their financial accounts by March 1, the deadline to hand over necessary paperwork.

Vincent Kompany’s side will want this lifted as quickly as possible and especially before the summer, where they will more likely than not be preparing for life back in the Premier League.

Burnley’s boss is confident the issue will get resolved ‘very soon’ considering the reason they weren’t able to send over their accounts on time.

The club changed auditors last year, and in a statement, the Clarets wrote that was the main reason why their accounts weren’t sent over by March 1 – but they did provide other financial details to the EFL.

They are yet to have the embargo lifted but reports suggest Kompany and co are confident it will be rescinded by April.

The Latest: Guerreiro on Burnley radar…

According to 90min, Burnley are so confident their embargo will be lifted that they’re making transfer plans for the summer.

Indeed, reporters Sean Walsh and Graeme Bailey write that ‘sources have suggested’ the Turf Moor side ‘could make an audacious attempt’ to lure Dortmund star Guerreiro to Lancashire.

The 61-cap Portugal international is out of contract at the end of the 2022/2023 season, making him an enticing prospect for Burnley and other suitors on a free deal.

Leeds United, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Wolves are also in the running.

The Verdict: Ambitious…

Guerreiro is a player of great experience and real quality with Man City even linked to making a move just last year.

The 29-year-old has enjoyed quite a decorated career at both club and international level, winning the European Championship with Portugal in 2016 and the Nations League three years later.

For Dortmund, Guerreiro has clinched domestic honours galore with two German Cups and a German Super Cup in his trophy cabinet.

According to WhoScored, the versatile left-back remains a key player under Edin Terzic – ranking as their fourth-best performing player by average match rating in the Bundesliga this season.

Guerreiro has racked up an impressive seven assists in that time whilst averaging Dortmund’s second-highest rate of key passes per 90 in the final third (WhoScored).

Defensively, the former Lorient star has also made more interceptions per match than any Dortmund player.

It’s crystal clear to us that he would be a stellar signing for Kompany with superstar England international Jude Bellingham even once saying Guerreiro ‘runs rings around everyone’.

Man Utd: Ten Hag Eyeing "Superb" £50m Amrabat Alternative

Manchester United have endured a rough start to the season.

In the first game, the Red Devils luckily scraped a 1-0 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers, who were denied a late penalty when Andre Onana clattered into Sasa Kalajdzic.

In the latest Premier League encounter against Tottenham Hotspur, Erik ten Hag’s men wilted and were overpowered by a more relentless, energetic, and dominant side.

In both matches, a common theme has been United’s disjointed and lacklustre midfield. Casemiro has suffered as a lone pivot and Mason Mount has struggled to adapt to being an advanced eight. There has been an absence of protection and the team is getting overrun, creating the need for a different type of profile in the centre of the park…

What’s the latest Manchester United transfer news?

According to the Guardian, United’s search for midfield reinforcements has prompted an approach for Everton titan Amadou Onana.

It is understood that Ten Hag is keen to address his side’s lack of physicality and has turned his attention to bringing in a commanding central midfielder.

However, Everton don’t want to lose Onana and insist they are under no financial pressure to make a sale.

The Toffees value the 21-year-old for at least £50m and there is awareness that could be tricky to keep him if United’s interest develops.

Ten Hag wants to add depth and quality to the midfield, feeling that Onana is a worthy candidate.

Would Amadou Onana be a good signing for Manchester United?

After spending one season playing for Hamburg in 2020/21, the club’s director of sport Jonas Boldt said:

“Technically, Amadou has almost perfect prerequisites. He is fast, technically skilled, tall, and strong in tackling.”

This description matches the profile that ten Hag is craving and Onana could be a balancing force between the defensive Casemiro and the free-roaming Bruno Fernandes.

Last season in the Premier League, the 6 foot 4 mountain registered 84% pass accuracy, averaged 2.2 tackles per game, made no errors leading to a shot or a goal, and won 57% of his duels, as per Sofascore.

Described as “superb” by reporter Richard Buxton, Onana occupies a far more opposing and domineering presence than Mount, whilst also displaying a commendable level of technical ability.

Amadou-Onana-Everton

United are also said to be interested in Fiorentina powerhouse Sofyan Amrabat, but similarly to Onana, no deal can progress until the club makes more sales.

The 27-year-old was labelled “the Gennaro Gattuso of Morocco” and someone who is “essential for the balance” by former England boss Fabio Capello – something that is a key point of interest for ten Hag.

Last term in Serie A, the North African managed 90% pass accuracy, completed 75% of his dribbles, and averaged 1.3 tackles per game.

Both players possess intoxicating athleticism, are technically astute, and are able to protect the backline. However, with Liverpool reportedly tracking Amrabat, it may be easier to pursue a deal for Onana, who is brimming with potential.

Given the current state of affairs at Everton, who look destined for another perilous relegation fight, if United initiate a more formal approach for the youngster, it would be tricky for him to decline.

Aston Villa Could Sign ‘Wonderful’ £165k-p/w Doku Alternative

Aston Villa are reportedly continuing their pursuit of Barcelona forward Ferran Torres, as Unai Emery and Monchi resume their search for star talent this summer.

The Villans have already equipped their side with reinforcements in the wide areas, after capturing Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen, however, the latest news suggests that the Spanish duo aren’t done spending yet.

What is Ferran Torres' market value?

Valued by Football Transfers at €40m (£34m), Torres is a player that has been linked with the Midlands side throughout the summer, with news in Spain reporting contact back in May.

News reported on Sunday from Spain, relayed by Sport Witness, has reinforced Villa’s interest in the winger, claiming that the club are pushing to sign him.

The report focused on Barcelona’s potential sale of Ousmane Dembele, and how heavily that move would rely on the Catalan giant’s desire to allow Torres to depart, along with Emery’s side’s requirement to up their price.

Earning £165k-per-week, the 23-year-old’s wages are mentioned as a problem that Villa could face in their pursuit, however, added that the club are ‘willing’ to make the effort to do what they can to bring the player to Villa Park.

How good is Ferran Torres?

Lauded as a “wonderful footballer” by Barcelona manager and Spanish footballing legend Xavi, the young winger could be one to fire the Villans to further glory.

The Spaniard isn’t the only wide-playing acquisition that Villa have been linked to this summer, with Belgian talent Jeremy Doku also a figure rumoured to be on Emery’s shopping list.

Despite being a “menace” in attack, as praised by U23 scout Antonio Mango, the Rennes winger may not be the best option on show for Emery and Monchi to poach, with Torres providing experience that the 21-year-old lacks.

ferran-torres-barcelona-arsenal-transfer-gossip-edu-arteta-gabriel-martinelli

As a former player of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, the Spaniard possesses the knowledge of what it takes to succeed in the Premier League, an asset that leaves some new signings fumbling after making the move from abroad.

A two-time Premier League winner at the Etihad, the versatile forward netted nine goals and recorded three assists in just 28 league appearances for the Citizens, where he struggled to maintain a spot in the competitive pecking order.

Placing Doku’s six goals scored in Ligue 1 compared to Torres’ four in La Liga aside, chasing the Barcelona gem may be the better option in Emery’s pursuit for an additional winger.

The two are similar in their strengths, however, the Midlands side would want to swerve away from hiring from abroad to avoid past mistakes, best highlighted by Leon Bailey’s move to Villa Park from the Bundesliga.

The Jamaica international registered 18 goals and assists in his final league campaign for Bayer Leverkusen, and has since recorded just five goals and six assists in the Premier League, showcasing that the grass isn’t always greener for those unfamiliar with the English game.

Speaking after securing a hat-trick in the Premier League, Torres admitted to the standard being “very physical” however added that he had “adapted very well”, supporting Villa’s claim to chase his talents.

Monchi and Emery could pull off a masterclass by opting for the former City ace over the talents of Doku, in a move that could present to be less of a risk with a high reward.

Liverpool: Klopp Can Sign Henderson Upgrade In £323k-p/w Machine

An update has emerged on the potential availability of one of Liverpool's transfer targets ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign…

What's the latest Liverpool transfer news?

According to German outlet Kicker, Bayern Munich could be open to offers for central midfielder Joshua Kimmich as they attempt to build up enough funds to push for Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane.

They claim that the Bundesliga giants may be willing to listen to proposals for the 28-year-old star, who has two years left to run on his deal in Bavaria.

This comes amid speculation over captain Jordan Henderson's future. The England international is reportedly closing in on a £10m move to Saudi Arabian side Al Ettifaq, who are managed by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

How good is Joshua Kimmich?

Jurgen Klopp could now land a massive upgrade on the English veteran by signing Kimmich as the German international has proven himself at the top level over the course of a number of seasons.

The 79-cap star has played 347 competitive matches for Bayern Munich and accumulated an impressive 20 trophies to date, including one Champions League, which is 12 more than Henderson has managed in 492 games for the Reds.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson.

This shows that the Bavarian-based machine is a proven winner who could drive Liverpool forward to win more major silverware over the coming years, as he knows what it takes to consistently lift trophies.

His form for Bayern over the last 12 months also suggests that the quality is there for him to improve Klopp's midfield as a replacement for Henderson.

Kimmich averaged a phenomenal Sofascore rating of 7.73 across 33 Bundesliga matches, which would have played him top of the Reds squad as Trent Alexander-Arnold led the way with a score of 7.32.

The German all-rounder showcased his creativity with an outstanding 2.7 key passes per game – 0.8 more than any of Liverpool's players – and a total of 11 'big chances' created for his teammates.

This did not result in him shying away from his defensive responsibilities, though, as the £323k-per-week sensation made 3.6 tackles and interceptions combined per outing, which would have placed him joint-top for the Reds with Thiago Alcantara and shows that he is able to cut out opposition attacks on a regular basis to protect his goal.

Henderson, meanwhile, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.88 – the 12th-highest in the team – across 35 Premier League games last season.

The 33-year-old leader did not offer as much as Kimmich in or out of possession as he managed 0.9 key passes to go along with 1.5 tackles and interceptions combined per clash.

Therefore, the Bayern powerhouse, who was once described as a "phenomenal" player by legendary manager Jose Mourinho, would be a massive upgrade on Henderson in midfield.

Their respective statistics last season indicate that the 28-year-old dynamo would provide Klopp with more quality as a defensive anchor in front of the defence whilst also being able to open up the opposition with his impressive passing to create chances for his teammate with greater regularity.

If the German giants are open to offers for their midfield machine, Liverpool must test the waters to see if they can be at the front of the queue.
